SUMMARY:Rally Against Gentrification and Social Mix at 58 W Hastings
DESCRIPTION:What: Rally & Teach-in\nWhen: Tuesday\, April 18th – 4.30pm\nWhere: Meet 4.30pm @ Victory Square \nWe will then march together into the 58 W Hastings Open House (Room 420\, VCC Downtown Campus – 250 West Pender Street). \nOur Homes Can’t Wait (OHCW) acknowledges that this event is being organized on the occupied\, unceded traditional territory of the Coast Salish peoples\, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. \nNot another Woodwards: \nAfter promising that the site at 58 W Hastings would be used for 100% welfare/pension rate housing controlled by the community\, the City is proposing to rezone the site for only 50% welfare/pension rate housing controlled by the Chinatown Foundation. Our Homes Can’t Wait has been working in good faith with the city on this project since last summer but virtually all parts of our community vision for the site have been ignored by the City. Come to a rally and teach-in at the City’s open house for 58 W Hastings and tell the City “We don’t want another Woodwards” and “We want Gregor to keep his promise.” \nBackground: \nThe lot at 58 W Hastings has been the the long-term focus of a demand for social housing in the Downtown Eastside\, including the Downtown Eastside Neighborhood Council’s “Ten Sites” campaign\, the Olympic Tent City in 2010. Most recently\, the 58 W Hastings Tent City and the Our Homes Can’t Wait Campaign. Yet\, despite the persistent and long-term demand for housing on the site\, only half of the units in the new development will be affordable to low-income people. \nOn August 2nd\, at a packed meeting in the Carnegie Theatre\, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson finally agreed to the minimum demand of the Our Homes Can’t Wait campaign: that the city-owned lot at 58 W Hastings should have social housing with 100% welfare/pension rents. \nThrough the Fall of 2016\, OHCW has met with the City to work on both the funding and operating of the site. In this process\, we have emphasized the importance of resident controlled social housing and the need for 100% social housing at welfare/pension rate\, which we see as necessary\, both as a means to provide enough housing units and as a means to slow down the social-mix gentrification process\, which has been responsible for increased evictions and SRO conversions. \nWe have also pushed for 500 sq. ft units which we reduced to 400 in a goodwill compromise\, but which planners have significantly undercut at 250 sq. ft. We also expected\, based on early conversations\, that the site would provide a total number of 300 units\, which has since been reduced to 250 and now 222 units. As it stands\, the City has only secured enough funding to subsidize half of the units (111 units). OHCW also wanted peer-run and cultural services and spaces on the ground floor but in December\, Our Homes Can’t Wait discovered that the City was planning to lease three floors of the building to VCH\, without community consultation. \nIn each instance we feel that not only has the City failed to listen to these basic priorities put forward by the community\, it has unanimously pushed through an opposing agenda for 58 W Hastings. OHCW opposes the development of another social mix building on Hastings. Since Woodward’s was built on the social-mix model\, we have lost over 400 units of SRO Hotel units in a 1-block radius to the West of 58 W Hastings. 228 units would barely make up for half the units we lost in the same area. \nCome to the open house rally and tell the City we don’t want another Woodwards! \nRead more about our Community Vision for Change and Our Homes Can’t Wait here: www.carnegieaction.org/ourhomescantwait \nThe Our Homes Can’t Wait campaign and the community vision for 58 W Hastings has so far been endorsed by: Carnegie Community Action Project\, Carnegie Community Centre Association\, The Drug Users Resource Centre\, Gallery Gachet\, Alliance Against Displacement\, Carnegie African Descent Group\, IWW Vancouver\, Council of Senior Citizens’ Organizations of B.C\, Union Gospel Mission\, Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users\, WAHRS – Western Aboriginal Harm Reduction Society\, First United – Vancouver Downtown Eastside\, Pivot Legal Society\, Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre\, Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House\, Chinatown Concern Group 唐人街關注組\, Chinatown Action Group 華埠行動小組\, and Aboriginal Front Door

SUMMARY:Stop Pacific Trails Pipeline & Coastal Gas Link
DESCRIPTION:The Pacific Trails Pipeline and Coastal Gas Link are both intending to force their way onto unceded Unist’ot’en Yintah. They have spent the Fall of 2016 preparing numerous sites along their proposed route. \nWe need courageous\, loving\, and determined People to join us on the frontline to help us stop the company from doing any illegal\, unconstitutional\, and unsanctioned work on our territories. \nWe also need People to become organizers for their areas and create localized events to uncertainty amongst the investors for this project. #Chevron #WoodsideEnergyInternational #TransCanada#CanadianGovernment #BCgovernment #RBC #GetemdoneContracting \nWe are also looking for solid researchers to help assemble a more comprehensive list of investors\, contractors\, subcontractors\, and government agencies who are attempting to enable these #GlobalCriminals. This comprehensive list will be used as major campaign points for rallues between now and the Spring if 2017. \nWe’ve been fighting many proposed pipelines for the past 7 years and the dirtiest of the petroleum companies (Chevron & TransCanada) are who is left of our foes on the battlefield. \nWE NEED YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS

SUMMARY:International Day Against Racism March
DESCRIPTION:To mark the International Day Against Racism\, we will gather at Thornton Park on Main and Terminal\, then we will march through Chinatown to Jack Poole Plaza. This where Indigenous\, Black\, Chinese\, Japanese and South Asian people lived historically. \nLet’s march against racism and all forms of bigotry\, the rise of fascism\, Bill C-51\, Travel bans\, Safe Third Country Agreement and Hate Crimes. \nWe acknowledge that this event\, our organizing\, words and beings occurs on the occupied\, traditional\, ancestral\, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples – specifically the sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations. \nWe also acknowledge that acts of systemic colonization against indigenous folks are currently taking place in an ongoing manner within institutions\, power structures and language use. We must partake in recognizing our positions and complicity in settler colonialism on these stolen ancestral lands. \nThis group is made for the purpose of planning a protest as a form of action against the hateful immigrant/refugee/Muslim ban in the USA that is targeting folks who hold dual- citizenship within these countries (& hold\, greencards\, visas\, have permanent residency within the States): Iran\,Iraq\,Sudan\,Somalia\,Syria\,Yemen & Libya…. or simply are refugees from these areas. \nThis is targeting racialized bodies whose backs imperial & colonial states were forcibly built on.We are angered & heartbroken about this ongoing form of colonial\, racist violence enacted by white supremacy & border imperialism. \nCalling on Trudeau to condemn the ban and open Canada as a place for those who have nowhere to go\, and to the US government to immediately put an end to this horrific policy to suspend the safe third country agreement. \nWe have bled enough. NO TO HATRED. \nTo endorse\, please message us.

SUMMARY:The Struggle for Justice Continues! Your support is Needed!
DESCRIPTION:Despite the fact that the Hon. John McCallum issued an exemption that allowed Jose Figueroa to leave sanctuary at Walnut Grove Lutheran Church and regain his freedom in December 2015. The bureaucracy within CSIS\, CBSA has not giving up the possibility to continue using the same allegation against other immigrants and refugees. Jose Figueroa continues his struggle to clear his name from the unfounded allegation that took away his freedom!! \nMark your calendar for March 23\, 2017. This day Jose Figueroa will be self representing before the Federal Court of Appeal again. The hearing will take place at 701 West Georgia Street\, Vancouver\, BC\, V7Y 1B6\, starting at 9:30 am. It is scheduled to last no more than 3 hours. But since it is a public hearing you can come an show your support to the family. When you arrive to the Federal Court Building at the reception on the 3rd floor\, ask for the matter of Figueroa v. The Minister of Foreign Affairs\, you can enter and leave the courtroom when you wish as long as you do so quietly so you don’t disturb the proceeding. Your moral support is very\, very important\, the issue of access to justice is very serious\, everyday thousands of people have their rights violated because they can’t afford legal representation\, legal precedents that are decided having regard to fundamental principles rather than having regard to who can pay a lawyer\, are urgently needed\, your presence in the Courtroom will be of great help. \nA quick note of reference\, Jose tried to get a stay of the proceeding pending the results of an investigation the information commissioner on a complaint that was submitted in 2014\, the Court of Appeal has just dismissed Jose’s request\, for this reason the hearing will still take place on March 23\, 2017\, at 9:30 am at the Federal Court Building. We hope that you can provide your moral support to the family.

SUMMARY:Do We Need Police and Prisons?
DESCRIPTION:Do We Need Police and Prisons?\nA discussion of punitive justice & the state! \nWednesday\, March 22nd\, 2017\n4:30-7:30pm\nSFPIRG Lounge – TC 326 in the Rotunda\nSFU Burnaby \nMost of us take police and prisons for granted and accept this system as a legitimate exercise of state power. We believe – because this is what we have been taught – that police and prisons are necessary\, and that without them\, we would descend into terrifying chaos. \nBut is this true?\n\nJoin us for a conversation on the nature of criminalization\, police and prisons and an exploration of possible alternatives to state violence. \nWant to get involved with prison justice organizing? Check out Letters For The Inside\, SFPIRG’s research program that pairs student researchers with inquiries from inmates! Help support access to information and education! Contact letters@sfpirg.ca for more information and to schedule a volunteer training session! \n*** Accessibility Info *** \nBrenda and Kirsten\, Registered ASL-ENGLISH Interpreters\, are booked for this event. Please email admin@sfpirg.ca by March 7th at 3pm to confirm your attendance. If no confirmations are received\, ASL will be cancelled. \nFood is being ordered for this event. Please email admin@sfpirg.ca by March 16th if you have any dietary needs we can take into account if you plan on attending. \nThe SFPIRG lounge is wheelchair/scooter accessible with access to accessible washrooms nearby. We are also aiming to have a variety of seating options available. \nGender-neutral washrooms are available just outside of the SFPIRG lounge space. \nIn order to enable people to attend without experiencing hardship\, bus tickets and money for dependent care (this can include childcare\, eldercare\, etc.) are available upon request. Please email admin@sfpirg.ca with inquiries. \nWhile we cannot ensure a fully scent-free event in this setting\, we’re aiming to create a scent-reduced environment by not bringing additional scents into the space. Exposure to laundry products\, colognes\, hairspray\, and many other scented products can trigger serious health reactions in individuals with asthma\, allergies\, migraines\, and/or chemical sensitivities. We ask that you not wear/ apply/ or bring any scented products into this space. If you do so\, we may need to ask you to leave so others can safely stay in the space. If you find yourself being impacted by someone’s use of scented products during the conference\, speak with any one of the organizers. We know that this can be a big step for many people. As Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha says in Fragrance Free Femme of Colour Realness\, “Cutting out scents may seem like a pain in the ass\, but it means that awesome\, ass-kicking community members you love can attend events you’re at and make out with you without having seizures\, throwing up or otherwise getting really sick.” Please\, bring your amazing self\, and keep the scents at home!\n(More info here: http://thinkbeforeyoustink.com/howtogofragrancefree.html\, http://www.brownstargirl.org/blog/fragrance-free-femme-of-colour-realness-draft-15\, http://eastbaymeditation.org/accessibility/scentfree.html) \nThe event is nut-free and peanut-free. Absolutely no nuts or peanuts will be permitted within the event space in order to create an allergen-free environment for all participants. This includes (but is not limited to) products like hazelnuts\, cashews\, almonds\, coconuts\, walnuts\, coconut oil\, coconut milk\, and peanut butter. \nIf you have any other allergies or sensitivities that we need to know about so that you can participate fully and safely\, please let us know at info@sfpirg.ca. \nSome folks are sensitive and/or get sick from electromagnetic frequency radiation (EMF). This can include radiation from cell phones\, Wi-Fi\, fluorescent lights\, and more. SFU Burnaby has Wi-Fi set up throughout its campus\, including in the SFPIRG lounge. In order to reduce EMF exposure\, we will strive to minimize fluorescent light usage and utilize natural lighting whenever possible. \nIf there is any other way we can make this event more accessible for you\, please let us know at info@sfpirg.ca! \n*** \nACCESSIBILITY AUDIT: \nFor some specific info about the lounge and parts of the rest of the campus\, check out the following audit of SFPIRG (Simon Fraser Public Interest Research Group) which was performed in July 2012 by the Radical Access Mapping Project\, with assistance and support from Kalamity Hildebrandt and the rest of the staff at SFPIRG. SUMMARY:Unlearning Anti-Blackness 101
DESCRIPTION:We would like to acknowledge that this event is taking place on the ancestral\, traditional and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm\, Skxwú7mesh\, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations\, on whose territories we live and organize. As stewards of these lands\, we would like to recognize the tremendous labour that has gone into nurturing and protecting these traditional lands\, and the many ways in which indigenous resistance has deeply informed our own activism. \n~~\nUnlearning Anti-Blackness 101 is a workshop for allies (white folks and non-black people of colour) to understand the ways in which anti-blackness is so violent and yet so pervasive in our society\, especially in a city with such a small black population. This workshop is not an Ally™ badge / license to use the N word / an undoing of centuries of colonial and racial violence towards Black people. It is a small step in a life-long journey of unlearning anti-black racism and working towards creating communities that are safe and welcoming for Black folks. We invite you to join us for a facilitated conversation around unlearning anti-blackness. \n**REGISTRATION IS CURRENTLY CLOSED** \nWe are at capacity for this workshop. If you have registered and can no longer attend\, please let us know so we can open spots. We will be sending confirmation emails soon. \nDATE: March 14th\nTIME: 6PM-8PM\nLOCATION: TBA (within Metro Vancouver)\nCOST: $20-50 (sliding scale)*\nFACILITATORS: Cicely-Belle Blain\, Ivan Leonce \n*If you are able to contribute on the higher end of the scale\, please consider doing so\, so that other people\, especially non-black people of colour are able to attend. Payments will go towards room rental\, snacks\, ASL intepretation and facilitator labour. Any additional donations would be much appreciated to reduce the cost of this workshop and future workshops. \n*We have received donations to fully cover the cost of some spots for low-income/poor folks at this workshop. We are currently able to offer 6 FREE spots. Please let us know if you aren’t able to financially contribute at this time – no questions asked. \n*Black folks are absolutely welcome to attend for free. We also want to acknowledge that unlearning anti-blackness necessitates the important naming\, sharing and processing of emotions for non-black folks. If you do choose to attend\, please let us know how we can best support you before and after the workshop. \nFor any questions\, please email cicelyblain@gmail.com. \nFor any concerns around whiteness\, that may not be appropriate to message the facilitators about\, please contact the Critial Whiteness Network at criticalwhitenessnetwork@gmail.com. \n***ACESSIBILITY*** \nThe Gordon Neighbourhood House:\n– is wheelchair accessible\n– includes accessible\, single stall\, gender-neutral washrooms\n– is scent-reduced\n– has an elevator \nMore information here: http://gordonhouse.org/about-gordon-neighbourhood-house/accessibility-details/ \nASL-English interpretation will be provided. We will be connecting with folks who have named this need about preferred intepreters and their specific needs later this week. \nRefreshments will be provided. We will be including a form for you to let us know your needs around refreshments in the confirmation email. \nWe ask that folks help us maintain a scent-reduced environment by not wearing fragrances or scents to this event. You can find more information about how to attend scent-reduced spaces here: (http://www.brownstargirl.org/blog/fragrance-free-femme-of-colour-realness-draft-15). \nThere will be active-listeners available at the workshop if folks need someone to check-in with 1-on-1 about feelings that come up for them. \nWe are committed to making this workshop as accessible as possible. Thank you for naming your needs\, we are currently working on getting them all met. If you have questions about accessibility or your needs have changed please email ivanleonce@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Stop the Pipelines: Start the Music - Kwantlen \, Fort Langley
DESCRIPTION:Land Defenders Dinner for invited Allies – 4:30 pm\nDoors for Public event 7:00\nReports from the front lines – 7:15 pm\nSilent auction featuring great art and other intriguing offerings.\nCash draws\nMusic and celebration 8:00 pm -featuring Holly Arntzen \, Ostwelve\, poetry by Justin Bige\, Valeen Jules and Wild Salmon Defenders Alliance drummers and singers \nAdmission by donation. All ages event – children welcome.\nCome on out and show your support for the front line work. \nIn March\, 2017 the Chiefs and other representatives of the Unist’ot’en Clan will be on tour – bringing word of their ongoing stand in defence of their land and against the construction of fossil fuel pipelines.\n\nJoin us for a fundraiser for the Unist’ot’en Camp including paying for the completion of the Healing Lodge. The Camp stands directly in the way of numerous proposed fossil fuel pipelines – both tar sands oil and fracked gas. \nFor a list of other tour venues click here:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/668408633341791/ \nThe Unist’ot’en Territory is located about half way between Prince George and Prince Rupert in northern British Columbia. Numerous bitumen and fracked gas pipelines are proposed to cross this land. The Northern Gateway bitumen pipeline has been stopped as was expected. But industry and government are currently pushing ahead with several fracked gas pipelines. With a Provincial election this May and pressure from the pipeline companies\, the Unist’ot’en are preparing for stepped up incursions onto their land by these companies. \nThe life cycle carbon footprint of fracked gas is similar to that of tar sands bitumen. The process of extracting and liquefying natural gas is extremely destructive to the land and uses huge amounts of energy and water. And\, the contracts being signed for these pipelines allow them to be converted to transport tar sands bitumen after only 5 years. \nThe Unist’ot’en stance is clear – there will be no fossil fuel pipelines built on their land. But the Camp is about much more than this. It is a place of learning\, of healing\, of connecting with nature\, of breaking with the legacy of colonization. Now in its 8th year\, the Unist’ot’en Camp includes an all season bunk house\, a permaculture garden and an under construction Healing Lodge. The Camp is completely drug and alcohol free. \nThe Unist’ot’en Healing Lodge will have indigenous youth as its main focus. The lodge is about 2/3 built and will hopefully be completed this year. It will include a dining hall and kitchen\, counselling and meeting rooms\, a green house and extensive sleeping quarters. \nAt the Healing Lodge\, Indigenous youth will be away from the influences of urban life. They will learn about their culture\, history and language. They will engage in the physical work of restoring the land. And\, they will receive high quality personal counselling. \nFunds raised during the “Stop the Pipelines; Start the Music” Tour will go towards maintaining the Unist’ot’en Camp including paying for the completion of the Healing Lodge. \nTheir website is at – \nhttp://unistotensolidarity.com/ \nThis Unist’ot’en Declaration was issued in the summer of 2015 : \nhttp://forestaction.wdfiles.com/local–files/legal/Press%20Kit%20-%20Unist%27ot%27en%20Declaration%20-%20August%206%2C%202015.pdf

They’ve busked across Europe\, performed in the Brazilian Amazon and Rio’s famous ‘Casa Rosa’\, toured in a Scamper RV the 12\,000 km roundtrip from Vancouver to Panama and circumnavigated the United States twice in their yellow School Bus. \nDavid Morin\nhttp://www.davidmorinmusic.com/\nWith his self released debut album\, Every Colour\, out on Bombay Records\, David Morin plays gigs around the world\naccompanied by a live band. Yet the humble neo-soul singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist still chooses to\nbusk regularly on street corners in his hometown of Vancouver.\nAfter all\, that’s where this 32-year old\, who is of Metis Native American descent\, honed his craft––and his social message.\nLike the man himself\, David Morin’s music is pure\, authentic and from the heart. Self-taught and passionately\ncommitted to being a career artist\, he’s blessed with the ability to turn strangers into fans. \nDavid Beckingham\nhttp://www.davidbeckingham.com/\nDavid Beckingham spent the last 10 years touring\, writing and recording with the Canadian Juno Award nominated trio\, Hey Ocean. During this time his own catalogue of unreleased solo material piled up and in May\, 2016 he released he solo debut\, Just When The Light. The album is loaded with contrast between existential gratitude\, and deep\, personal unrest. It’s about light and shadow\, and the human predisposition toward always yearning for something other than what you have. \nJack Garton and the Demon Squadron\nhttps://jackgarton.com/demonsquadron/\nThe roots roller-coaster band Demon Squadron is the engine behind Jack Garton’s songs. Formed in 2013 and named after Garton’s grandfather’s special ops flight squadron in WWII\, the band is a highly-trained crew of Vancouver’s most unique musical talent. From rockabilly to rocksteady\, country to cajun\, every show is roots music mayhem executed with classic showmanship and wry humour. While touring Western Canada\, Washington State and Alaska\, the Squadron has been honoured to serve on festival main stages\, concert halls\, theatres\, clubs and cook-outs. It’s all in the line of duty for BC’s rambling servicemen and women as they continue to wage Garton’s campaigns of heavy honesty and devastating joy throughout the region.

SUMMARY:Rad Families - book release & social hour
DESCRIPTION:RAD FAMILIES: A CELEBRATION Book Tour & Social Hour\nJoin editor Tomas Moniz and writers scott winn carla bergman and more for an engaging hour of storytelling at Spartacus Books on March 10th at 7:00 pm! \nRAD FAMILIES: A CELEBRATION honors the messy\, the painful\, the playful\, the beautiful\, the myriad ways we create families. This is not an anthology of experts\, or how-to articles on perfect parenting; it often doesn’t even try to provide answers. Instead\, the writers strive to be honest and vulnerable in sharing their stories and experiences\, their failures and their regrets. \nGathering parents and writers from diverse communities\, it explores the process of getting pregnant from trans birth to adoption\, grapples with issues of racism and police brutality\, probes raising feminists and feminist parenting. It plumbs the depths of empty nesting and letting go. It’s a book that reminds us all that we are not alone\, that community can help us get through the difficulties\, can\, in fact\, make us better people. It’s a celebration\, join us! \nPraise: \n“Rad dads\, rad families\, rad children. These stories show us that we are not alone. That we don’t have all the answers. That we are all learning.”\n—Nikki McClure\, illustrator\, author\, parent \n“Rad Families is the collection for all families.” —Innosanto Nagara\, author/illustrator of A Is for Activist \n“This collection takes the anaesthetized myth of parenting and reminds us what intimacy looks like. . . . The contributors describe the contours of family in a way that resonates.” —Virgie Tovar\, editor of Hot & Heavy: Fierce Fat Girls on Life\, Love & Fashion \n“Want a thriving family raising magical kids\, building beloved community\, and rooted in a vision of liberation that frees us all of white supremacist hetero-patriarchy? Read this book.”\n—Chris Crass\, author of Towards Collective Liberation\n“I love this book! Wonderfully written\, tenderly honest\, unabashedly hilarious\, deeply important stories from the messy beautiful world of real-life parenting. Thank goodness it exists.”\n—Michelle Tea\, author of How to Grow Up \nAbout the Editor: \nTomas Moniz is the founder and editor of the award winning zine Rad Dad. He has helped raise three children and has been making zines since the late nineties. He teaches basic skills classes and creative writing at Berkeley City College. SUMMARY:Marxist Women's School
DESCRIPTION:* The Young Communist League – Vancouver Presents *\nMarxist Women’s School\nSaturday\, February 25th @ The Centre For Socialist Education\n706 Clark Dr. Unceded Coast Salish Territories \n* Full Day *\n* Food Provided * \nWant to know more about how capitalism oppresses women\, non-binary and LGBTQ+ folks? Seeking ways to fight capitalism and bring about real change while meeting some rad people? Join the Young Communist League in our women’s school on how Marxism guides the struggle against patriarchy in today’s world! We will address a variety of topics from feminist theory\, LGBTQ+ struggles\, and gender\, race and imperialism\, all with a Marxist lens. \nThe school will focus on introducing these topics\, and invites discussion and participant involvement. Any level of participation is welcome\, while keeping in mind that male-identified folks are encouraged to practice active listening. Vegetarian breakfast and lunch will be provided\, and folks are welcome to show up anytime. Stick around because the school will be followed by dinner by donation and a social with beverages\, open mic\, music and women’s trivia! Why a women’s school? \nOver many years\, women have been fighting against patriarchal oppression. As Marxists\, we need to question how Patriarchy and Racism are linked to Capitalism and how the oppression of women and racialized peoples became intrinsic components of the capitalist system. As such\, it is important to understand the role of gendered and racialized oppression within the capitalist system\, rather than assuming they are separate from it. The women’s struggle past and present shows us that we must not only push back against the capitalist\, racist patriarchy\, but break it. In fact\, one hundred years ago\, on February 1917\, 50\,000 women poured out of the factories and onto the streets\, sparking the first revolution in Russia that would eventually lead to the downfall of the Tsar and their anti-woman policies. Revolution is possible\, and united women\, racialized\, LGBTQ+ and gender oppressed folks will be at the forefront of this movement. Building a truly intersectional movement and educating ourselves is an essential part of strengthening this movement against capitalism. \nIn her latest interview\, Angela Davis makes a strong point regarding the changes happening under capitalism\, stating: “The left\, as we have known it\, as important as it has been\, cannot remain the same force until it adequately counters these developments. Therefore\, it is important for the left to recognise that the constitution of the global working classes is very different now. In many ways the left is still dealing with this notion of the working classes as male\, or white male\, as in the case of the US. I think feminism\, radical feminism\, radical anti-racist and anti-capitalist feminism helps us to do the reconceptualisation that is necessary in order to produce a left that is more in line with the vast changes that have occurred in the era of global capitalism\, recognising the feminisation of the working class\, the structural shifts in the global economy\, of the fact that some industries are largely populated by women\, industries that rely on reproductive labour\, of care industries\, domestic service\, health care\, etc. It seems to me that in many ways\, unions around the world are not willing to recognise those changes. To organise the unorganised\, at this moment\, is to organise women.” \nLearn to struggle\, struggle to learn. See you there! \n*This event takes place on unceeded Coast Salish territory\, and we recognize that in acknowledging this\, it reminds us that we must always be struggling to decolonize our work.* \n*This event is a safe space for LGBTQIA2 folks\, people of colour and women identified folks. Sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, transphobia and any other oppressive behaviours will not be tolerated.* \nSchedule:\n11:00- 11:30- Breakfast\n11:30-1:00- Marxist-Feminist Theory and Practice\n1:00-2:00- Lunch Provided (by men)\n2:00- 3:15- Colonialism & Imperialism with a Gender Lens\n3:30-4:45- The LGBTQ+ Struggle Through a Marxist Lens\n5:00-10:30- Dinner and Social with Women’s Trivia and Open Mic \nPlease share Our Poster and Spread the Word!\nPoster: Made By Meg Iversen\nOriginal Art: “Judith Slaying Holofernes” by Artemisia Gentileschi\nRepresenting: Women Resisting and Fighting Fascism!
