SUMMARY:Screening: Hogan's Alley (1994)
DESCRIPTION:221A invites you to a screening of Andrea Fatona and Cornelia Wyngaarden’s Hogan’s Alley (1994)\, on Friday\, November 18 at 7pm. This event is part of a series of public programs for Rereading Room: The Vancouver Women’s Bookstore. \nIn the late 1960’s\, the City of Vancouver laid out extensive plans for ‘urban renewal’\, promising to radically transform the neighborhoods east of the downtown core. Central to this project was the construction of the Georgia Viaduct\, a twinned overpass bridge that would connect Downtown Vancouver to Main Street. If carried through according to the proposed plan\, the bridge would have displaced many of East Vancouver’s working class communities and ethnic conclaves\, including what we know now as Strathcona\, Chinatown\, and Gastown. While these areas were ultimately saved from demolition through effective community campaigning\, in 1970 the city proceeded in flattening Hogan’s Alley\, a neighbourhood that had been home to Vancouver’s first and last predominantly black community. \nHogan’s Alley presents the oral histories of Pearl Brown\, Leah Curtis\, and Thelma Gibson Towns\, three women whose narratives speak to the entangled complexities of class\, gender\, and sexuality\, as articulated in the life and aftermath of the disappeared neighbourhood. The video not only serves as a record of Hogan’s Alley and the history of black life in Vancouver\, but today takes on a renewed purpose in activating this history in the wake of the City of Vancouver’s recent plans to remove the Georgia Viaduct and redevelop the land for new housing and condominiums. \nCornelia Wyngaarden will be present during the screening for remarks and questions. The event will be followed by a reception.

SUMMARY:From Standing Rock to Burnaby Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Leadnow invites you to a free public event to hear about the growing\, continent-wide opposition to new pipelines like the Kinder Morgan and Dakota Access Pipelines. \nThurs. Nov. 17th\, 7:00-9:00pm (doors at 6:30)\nSFU Harbour Centre (515 W Hastings St)\n(see childcare details below) \nCanada’s federal government could approve the Kinder Morgan pipeline before the end of the year. In both the United States and Canada\, the Dakota Access Pipeline faces fierce resistance from Indigenous communities defending land\, water\, and sacred sites. \nCan direct action stop these new pipelines? How will fossil fuel companies and governments respond? Join us for a discussion with Indigenous and community leaders about the implications of direct action on stopping new fossil fuel infrastructure. \n## Confirmed Speakers: \nTara Houska is Ojibwe from the Couchiching First Nation has been involved with the resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline in Standing Rock. She is a tribal attorney and National Campaigns Director for Honor the Earth. In February 2016\, Houska was appointed Native American advisor to Bernie Sanders’ campaign for President. Her work is raising the profile of important issues\, like the impact of fossil fuel extraction on women\, their children and communities and the treatment of Indigenous people by private companies and police. \nGrand Chief Stewart Phillip is the President of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs\, an organization of First Nations that works toward the “implementation\, exercise\, and recognition” of Aboriginal Rights and Title and the protection of land and water. The Grand Chief was arrested by the RCMP\, along with more than a hundred others\, during the 2014 Burnaby Mountain encampment opposing the Kinder Morgan pipeline. \n## About the Kinder Morgan Pipeline\nKinder Morgan plans to make the Burrard Inlet a major tar sands export terminal by building new facilities including a pipeline and fuel tanks. The changes will add seven times as many tankers per month to Vancouver’s narrow harbour\, increasing the likelihood of a dangerous spill of irrecoverable diluted tar sands bitumen. More than 50 Indigenous nations across North America have signed the Treaty Alliance pledging to block all proposed pipeline and tanker projects affecting First Nations’ land and water\, including the Kinder Morgan plan. In December\, the federal government will make a decision about whether to approve or reject this proposal. \n## About the Dakota Access Pipeline\nIf completed\, the US$3.8 billion Dakota Access Pipeline would carry about 470\,000 barrels of crude oil per day from the low-quality\, high-cost Bakken oilfields to Illinois. In the largest gathering of First Nations in modern American history\, Indigenous peoples have set up a defenders’ camp on land belonging to the US Army Corps of Engineers in North Dakota. \nIn September\, private security attacked Indigenous peoples with dogs\, sound cannons\, and pepper spray at an encampment defending the Standing Rock Sioux tribal burial site. In September\, the Obama administration ordered a stop to all pipeline construction on US Army Corp land and called for a “voluntary pause” on all construction activity. Nationwide solidarity actions have mobilized to compel President Obama to revoke the pipeline’s permits. \nThis event takes place on the traditional\, unceded\, occupied territories of the səlil̓wətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. \nWe are working on making childcare available at this event. Please send an e-mail to rachel@leadnow.ca if this is something you require. Thanks!

SUMMARY:Studentification: Impacts of education-led immigrants
DESCRIPTION:In this talk Dr. Qiyan Wu will discuss studentification as a new feature and process of gentrification. Dr. Wu’s past work has examined Nanjing\, one of China’s largest urban centres. Using the example of Nanjing\, Dr. Wu will build on his original studies to consider cities with large Chinese immigrant populations\, such as Metro Vancouver and Manchester. \nPlease note: This event is free\, but you must reserve a seat through SFU’s system. \nThis event is part of the Urban Studies Program’s free fall lecture series: Who gets to be part of the city? SUMMARY:VAN Call To Action:We Stand With#StandingRock
DESCRIPTION:This event is hosted on occupied\, unceded Coast Salish territories \nOn Tuesday\, November 15th\, join a massive day of action in solidarity with those at Standing Rock\, and demand the American government and the Army Corps reject the Dakota Access Pipeline. \nIndigenous land defenders in the land occupied by the United States of America are now facing the Trump presidency. Trump has vowed to fast-track pipeline projects\, remove environmental protections\, renew the leases of coal mines\, and rescind executive orders relating to resource extraction projects. The Keystone XL pipeline will be back on the table. The Dakota Access pipeline will proceed with all the violent\, racist force of Trump’s administration. \nThe water protectors at Standing Rock need our support NOW\, more than ever. \nIndigenous peoples have been standing strong across Turtle Island\, protecting the land and water for future generations. The #noDAPL fight at Standing Rock is part of a network of land protectors and warriors. We declare our support for ALL Indigenous peoples resisting the destruction of their territories\, and this action links Standing Rock with other land defense struggles in so-called British Columbia\, at Unist’ot’en\, Lelu Island\, Madii Lii\, the Peace River Valley\, Ahousaht\, and many more. \nTHE TIME FOR ACTION IS NOW. Stand with Indigenous peoples. Stand with the Oceti Sakowin. Kill the black snake. #noDAPL #MniWiconi #WaterIsLife

SUMMARY:Demovict the Metrotown Plan! Save 3000 homes!
DESCRIPTION:At the end of November\, Burnaby Council will vote on the future of every resident of low-rise apartments in the Metrotown area. If Council passes the proposed Metrotown Plan update\, they will “up-zone” every rental apartment between Boundary and Royal Oak\, and Kingsway and Imperial for condo towers that will not be affordable for the current residents. \nThe Metrotown Plan will immediately impact the approximately six thousand people living in buildings inside its zone\, and then it will affect every renter in the lower mainland as we lose 3\,000 purpose-built rental apartments from our already strained\, near-zero vacancy rate rental stock. \nMayor Corrigan’s council has ignored and denied the demovicting effectsof their rezoning policies so far\, so we know it will take pressure to stop the plan. It is not too late to stop the Metrotown Plan – join those facing eviction to save their three thousand homes! Together we march to demand: \nDemovict the plan; Save 3000 homes! Burnaby Council must reject the “Downtown” Metrotown Plan and start from scratch with participation of the affected community to develop a “regional growth plan” that doesn’t displace established residents. Lower mainland renters can’t handle the loss of three thousand apartment units. \nPlacement before displacement! Hundreds of renters are already scheduled to be evicted through rezonings permitted under Burnaby’s old Metrotown plan and approved by City Council\, and they report that Burnaby’s existing tenant relocation supports are inadequate. We call on Burnaby council to ensure every renter is placed in new housing they can afford before they are displaced from their existing homes. \nOrganized by the Stop Demovictions Burnaby Campaign\nhttp://stopdisplacement.ca/burnaby\norganize@stopdisplacement.ca\nTwitter: @stopdisplacemnt\nFacebook: Against Displacement

SUMMARY:Workshop: Self Empathy and Communication Skills
DESCRIPTION:Do you take a moment to check in with yourself and you are met with a chorus of conflicting voices? \nHow do you navigate this inner landscape and find your way to a sense of peace and clarity? \nIn this workshop you will learn a concrete framework and set of skills to meet your experience in a way that opens the door to compassion and wise discernment. \nInternal conflict and external stressors leave you feeling depleted and confused. You need a new way through. You have likely given a lot to others and are ready to give some gifts to yourself. It’s difficult to know what you really need and how you thrive\, especially when social conditioning exhorts you to maintain an external focus. \nIn facing difficult situations or even your own high standards\, you can sometimes have an inner committee of thoughts and feelings pulling you different directions. Trying to make sense of it can be tiring work. You need a break from internal processing that goes in circles and self-analysis that leaves you feeling disconnected. \nIn this one day workshop you will learn to make sense of your internal world with a simple and direct framework that also enables you to meet yourself with compassion. You will practice identifying your feelings and needs and committing to effective action. In the framework of Nonviolent Communication (NVC)\, this is called self-empathy. \nSelf-empathy is a subtle skill that teaches compassionate witnessing of your experience (mindfulness). Learning self-empathy isn’t about affirmations or trying to talk yourself out of your feelings. It’s about identifying disconnecting thoughts\, beliefs\, habits\, and old stories\, and finding the way to your heart’s longing. \nAs you learn the skill of self-empathy it gets easier to translate self-critical thoughts and judgments of others into feelings and needs and the actions to meet needs. Over time\, you find that you don’t take things so personally and that you have more confidence in meeting difficult situations. \nJoin us for this one day workshop and learn and practice coming into compassionate relationship with yourself. Need more information before you sign up? Keep scrolling down for workshop content. \nWHAT TO EXPECT: \nFirst Half of the Afternoon: We will begin by naming and defining the foundational elements that make self-empathy practice accessible. These elements are: \n• Inner Compassionate Witness: This means having a “you” that can step back from your experience and notice what’s happening with gentleness.\n• Commitment/Intention: the practice of choosing moment by moment to pursue truth\, joy\, love\, & well-being.\n• Self-study: How do you thrive? How do you block nourishment? Recognizing feelings and needs\, & recognizing patterns.\n• Skills: Learn to practice an inner dialogue structure. Learn to name feelings\, and needs\, and make specific requests.\n• Practice: Maintain consistent engagement in that which supports your thriving.\n• Fluid Access to Core Truths: This means that you are able to easily articulate the core truths that contribute a thriving life. \nSecond Half of the Afternoon: Facing Others’ Reactivity and Staying Centered \nWe will now turn our attention toward external situations that trigger reactivity and how to stay connected to yourself in those difficult situations. We will start by naming common triggers. In addition to the self-empathy skills you have been practicing\, I will demonstrate some ways that make it easier to access those skills when someone is in front of you and you feel pressure to respond. \nResponding to Shame\, Guilt\, Anger\, and Depression \nShame\, guilt\, anger\, and depression are important alarm feelings. They indicate that a certain kind of thinking is happening for you. Specifically\, with shame\, you are having some version of a thought that you are a bad person. With guilt you are having some version of a thought that you should or shouldn’t have behaved in a particular way. For anger you are having some version of a thought that others or life should or shouldn’t be as it is. For depression\, you are having some version of a thought that you should or shouldn’t have certain feelings and needs. These feelings only arise in relationship to a cherished need or value\, so it’s essential to be able to turn towards these feelings and connect with the life giving energy underneath. \nAppreciation/Celebration and Responding to the Inner Committee \nAn important part of creating a consistent compassionate inner dialogue is the practice of noticing when needs are met. This means giving as much reflection and attention to yourself when you are thriving as when you are struggling. You will practice three different formats for appreciating and celebrating yourself. \nAt the end of the class\, we will do a closing circle and talk about next steps in your practice. \nWe will take two 30 minute breaks during the day. Please bring a potluck item or lunch with you. \nDo you need to know more before deciding whether to join us or not? Please give Kayte Gillespie a call or send an email with any questions you have. I am happy to talk with you. 778-919-5283 wcciassociation@gmail.com \nFacilitator: Kayte Gillespie \nRegistration\n$45 per person (includes workshop and handouts) \nYou do not have to have any experience in NVC to attend this workshop. The content in this workshop is a building block of the NVC (or compassionate communication) method. Please feel welcome to forward to friends and family. \nTo register please send an etransfer or paypal to wcciassociation@gmail.com and include your full name\, email and name of the workshop (as we have many at this time) \nCANCELLATION POLICY: to meet needs for inclusion\, security\, and predictability refunds are only given if requested 72 hours before the start of the course\, so please discern carefully.

SUMMARY:Stop Kinder Morgan to Stop DAPL - IntersAction!
DESCRIPTION:Part of the mobilization to Stop Kinder Morgan – November 19th\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/128002137658093/ \nJoin us as we stand in solidarity with the water protectors of Standing Rock and speak out against the inhuman treatment of peaceful Indigenous protestors. To win the fight against climate change we must stand united\, indigenous and settler\, to fight against ongoing colonial opression and violence. For those who can’t go to Standing Rock the best thing we can do in solidarity is build the fight against Kinder Morgan here. If we win\, they win. If they win\, we win. \nWhat is an IntersAction? \nIt’s an action where we flood an intersection on all sides with people crossing (on the light) with signs and banners without stopping the flow of traffic. This way we can be seen by the most people. \nStop Kinder Morgan November 19th\nWe will be handing out leaflets to pedestrians and drivers for the November 19th Stop Kinder Morgan Rally and March. There will be drumming and songs\, speeches from the megaphone and a ton of leaflets to give out and petitions to sign. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Teach-in: Boycott and Divest from G4$
DESCRIPTION:G4$ is the world’s largest security company and third largest private sector employer\, profiting from war and occupation\, mass incarceration of oppressed people and development aggression across the planet. They have a large contract providing ‘security services’ for the Israeli prisons\, the Apartheid Wall and at occupation check-points. They run prisons around the world\, including immigration detention centres that warehouse criminalized immigrants and refugees in Ontario. And they have recently been revealed to be ‘securing’ the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline across Indigenous territories in the U.S. \nJoin us for a teach in on G4$: case studies of G4S’s collaboration with imperialist war\, occupation\, plunder and exploitation; specific information about G4S operations locally; discussion on how we can increase practical solidarity between struggles based on our common enemy; information on the campaign to boycott and divest from G4S in Canada. \nCo-Hosted by BDS Vancouver – Coast Salish Territories\, Young Communist League – Vancouver\, International Leauge of Peoples Struggles in Canada and the Centre for Socialist Education

SUMMARY:NOV.2 -Day of Action against the Price Tag on Education at UBC
DESCRIPTION:We acknowledge that this event\, our organizing\, words and beings occurs on the occupied\, traditional\, ancestral\, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples – specifically the sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations.\nWe also acknowledge that acts of systemic colonization against indigenous folks are currently taking place in an ongoing manner within institutions\, power structures and language use. We must partake in recognizing our positions and complicity in settler colonialism on these stolen ancestral lands. \nNovember 2nd is the Cross-Canada Student Day of Action and the UBC Social Justice Centre\, the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) & the Young Communist League (YCL-Van) join individuals and groups around the country to organize against the price tag placed on education. Students who are being disproportionally pushed out of institutions of education are Indigenous\, racialized\, queer\, trans* & differently abled folks who are financially struggling – our education system must not further marginalize these groups by blocking their entryway into universities simply because they are unable to fill certain pockets with paper bills. \nThis violence must be stopped and we must show our discontent with these systems of exclusion. \nMany Indigenous folks are waiting to be granted scholarships & bursaries just be to considered into this school\, which was non-consensually built and profits on their ancestral lands. Many immigrants and refugees do not have the monetary ability to have access to education systems. These are acts of horrific violence and are only some reasons of why free education is needed. \nPublic education is under attack across Canada. The government in Newfoundland and Labrador has ended the freeze on tuition fees and reintroduced student loans instead of grants\, while making cuts to Memorial University in its recent budget. In Nova Scotia\, increases in government funding to Post-Secondary Education are capped at 1% (well below inflation)\, and universities are now allowed to increase tuition fees by more than 3% a year\, with the excuse of making “market adjustments.” In Ontario\, the Liberal government is committed to a Funding Formula Review\, that will be disastrous unless students mobilize in a province that already has the highest tuition fees in the country. In Quebec\, tuition fees are increasing with inflation while the Liberal government there cuts funding to university and CÉGEP education. In BC\, where tuition fees were doubled in four years after they were deregulated a decade ago\, the cuts have continued with per student funding remaining far below 2001 levels. \nThe list of attacks on public education continues in every province\, with most provinces facing yearly increasing tuition fees. All governments\, alongside their friends in the senior administration of colleges and universities\, are pushing for academic and learning environments to be increasingly tied to the interests of big business.\nThe Trudeau Liberals have also continued colonialism in education by underfunding the Post-Secondary Student Support Program\, forcing Indigenous students to not receive their treaty right to free education. \nA Federal Post-Secondary Act\, would enforce standards for public education to be set in all provinces. It would make private education illegal\, meaning educational institutions could not accept money from private tuition fees or private donations. This act\, must also respect the rights for Indigenous nations\, Quebec\, and Acadia\, to have self-determination over their own management of institutions and curriculum of education\, while providing adequate public funding. \nWe have seen pockets of important mobilizations across Canada. Recently\, students showed solidarity with teaching assistants and sessionals on strike for a living wage at UofT and York\, the I Am a Student Movement at UBC built momentum against increases to residence fees and international student fees\, the Quebec student movement alongside CÉGEP teachers has been combatting budget cuts\, and in Newfoundland and Labrador\, a mass movement is growing against austerity\, with students playing a key role.” \nWe are not only notifying you of this event\, but also urging you in join us in expressing our solidarity\, emotions\, voices and hands to bring to light this pressing issue. We are students\, not ATMS. \nThis rally will be happening on November 2nd from 12–1 PM\, starting at the Flagpole by the Rose Garden and finishing off by the Nest to listen to some leaders\, organizers and passionate social justice warriors expressing their views on conditional educational systems. \nWith solidarity\, love and resilience\, the UBC Social Justice Centre \nMore info on Day of Action nationwide: http://www.cfs-fcee.ca/the_issues \nHuffington Post on the urgency of free tuition: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/bilan-arte/the-case-for-free-tuition_b_12516930.html?ncid=engmodushpmg00000004

Vancouver Asian Film Festival on Sunday\, November 6 at 4:30PM. \nTickets are now available here on a first come\, first served basis:\nhttp://festival.vaff.org/2016/section/november-6/ \nFacebook event for the premiere:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/199696843786080/ \nAbout the film: \n“All Our Father’s Relations (祖根父脈) tells the story of the Grant siblings who journey from Vancouver to China in an attempt to rediscover their father’s roots and better understand his fractured relationship with their Musqueam mother. Raised primarily in the traditions of the Musqueam people\, the Grant family and their story reveals the shared struggles of migrants and Aboriginal peoples today and in the past. \nThis film helps to record and revitalize the interconnected histories of Chinese Canadian and First Nations relations along the Fraser River in British Columbia. Dating as far back as the 19th century\, relations between Chinese and First Nations in Canada were often respectful and mutually beneficial; both peoples supported one another in the face of marginalization and racism. \nThe Chinese market gardening history in the Musqueam community is an important historical example of reciprocal relationships between Chinese and First Nations\, and the respect many early Chinese migrants showed as guests on First Nations’ territories. The film features siblings Helen Callbreath\, Gordon Grant\, Larry Grant\, and Howard E. Grant\, who are elders from the Musqueam Nation with Chinese ancestry. The siblings reflect on their experiences growing up on the Chinese farms at Musqueam and in Vancouver’s Chinatown\, and the impact of discriminatory government legislation on their lives. They also visit the ancestral village of their late father\, in Guangdong\, China\, for the first time. The Grants’ father\, Hong Tim Hing\, left the village of Sei Moon in Guangdong\, China in 1920 to Vancouver\, BC – the unceded territory of the Musqueam hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-speaking people. He worked on the Lin On Farm at Musqueam Indian Reserve 2\, where he met his wife\, Agnes Grant. ” –www.allourfathersrelations.com

SUMMARY:Tahoe on Trial! Courthouse Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:Stand in solidarity with Guatemalan and community activist Adolfo Garcia and his Guatemalan counsel\, Rafael Maldonado from the Centre for Environmental\, Social and Legal Action (CALAS) on November 1st at 9 am when they will be at the BC Court of Appeals. Together with their legal counsel in Vancouver\, they will urge the court to accept jurisdiction and hear the case against Tahoe Resources’ Escobal silver mine for the armed attack against him and six others in April 2013. The seven claimants in the case against Tahoe are supported in Canada by Vancouver law firm Camp Fiorante Matthews Mogerman (CFM) and the Canadian Centre for International Justice (CCIJ). \n***\nAdolfo Garcia is 1 of 7 men who were shot during a peaceful protest in April 2013 outside of Tahoe Resources’ Escobal silver mine. The men\, residents of San Rafael Las Flores\, where the company’s Escobal mine is located\, allege that Tahoe is legally responsible for the violence inflicted on them. \nAlberto Rotondo\, former military officer from Peru and head of security for Tahoe at the time of the incident\, was previously under arrest in Guatemala awaiting trial for allegedly ordering security guards to fire at protesters and then covering up the evidence. In November 2015\, he fled the country\, since which time he was rearrested in his native Peru. Guatemala has initiated an extradition process in order to eventually continue with his prosecution. \nNotably\, the legal cases against Tahoe Resources are being carried out in a larger context of opposition to the Escobal mine. To date\, sixteen locally-convened referenda have been held in which tens of thousands of people in the seven municipalities closest to the project have voted against the Escobal mine given their concerns over current and potential environmental and social impacts. The violence\, repression\, and criminalization community leaders continue to face is not limited to what transpired on April 27\, 2013. Find more information here: tahoeontrial.net.

SUMMARY:Tonight! Ask & Answer Tour with Vivek Shraya + Chase Joynt
DESCRIPTION:Critical Studies in Sexuality and the Faculty of Education: Teacher Education for All! present: \nASK & ANSWER features award-winning\, multidisciplinary artists Chase Joynt and Vivek Shraya\, presenting their new books—Joynt’s first book You Only Live Twice (Coach House Books)\, and Shraya’s debut collection of poetry\, even this page is white (Arsenal Pulp Press). \nMonday\, October 31\, 4PM\nPonderosa Commons Ballroom\n6445 University Boulevard\, UBC\nDirections: https://goo.gl/maps/yLqdTXf9Qgp \nYour RSVP is always appreciated: http://grsj.arts.ubc.ca/ask-answer-tour/ \n– – – \n“You Only Live Twice” \nWhat if it’s not true that you only live once? In this genre-transcending book\, trans writer and media artist Chase Joynt and HIV-positive movie artist Mike Hoolboom come together over the films of Chris Marker to exchange transition tales\, confessional missives that map out the particularities of occupying what they call ‘second lives’: Chase’s transition from female to male and Mike’s near-death from AIDS. \nWeaving cultural theory with memoir and media analysis\, YOLT asks intimate questions about what it might mean to find love and hope through conversation across generations. \n“even this page is white” \nVivek Shraya’s debut collection of poetry\, even this page is white\, is a bold\, timely and personal interrogation of skin—its origins\, functions and limitations. Poems that range in style from starkly concrete to limber break down the barriers that prevent understanding of what it means to be racialized. Shraya paints the face of everyday racism with words\, rendering it visible\, tangible and undeniable. \nFeatured in the CBC documentary Where Have All The Poets Gone? \n– – – \nCHASE JOYNT is a Toronto-based moving-image artist and writer whose work utilizes strategies of first person engagement to interrogate representations of gender and violence. Recently awarded the EP Canada/Canada Film Capital Award for Emerging Canadian Artist and jury awards for Best Documentary and Best Short\, Chase’s work continues to be exhibited internationally. In 2013\, Chase starred as Mars Brito\, the lead character in John Greyson’s Murder in Passing\, which is widely regarded as the most ambitious transmedia public narrative project available on public screens worldwide. Murder in Passing is currently being made into a feature film. His next two film projects\, Between You and Me and Genderize\, are forthcoming from CBC Docs in Summer 2016. \nVIVEK SHRAYA is a Toronto-based artist whose body of work includes several albums\, films\, and books. Her first novel\, She of the Mountains\, was named one of The Globe and Mail’s Best Books of 2014. Her debut collection of poetry\, even this page is white\, was released this spring\, and her first children’s picture book\, The Boy & the Bindi\, was published this fall. Vivek has read and performed internationally at shows\, festivals and post-secondary institutions\, including sharing the stage with Tegan & Sara. She is one half of the music duo Too Attached. \n– – – \nWe acknowledge that this event takes place on the traditional\, unceded\, occupied and ancestral homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) First Nation. \nThis event is made possible by the Faculty of Education: Teacher Education for All!\, Equity & Inclusion\, and the Jane Rule Endowment for the Study of Human Relationships\, and has been organized by Critical Studies in Sexuality at The Social Justice Institute.

SUMMARY:Struggles for Self-Determination from Rojava to British Columbia
DESCRIPTION:https://www.sfu.ca/humanities-institute/public-events/conferences/rojava-conf.html \nLocation: room 1700\, SFU Harbour Centre. Both the room and building are wheelchair accessible. \nADMISSION: \nEmployed: $10–20\nStudent/Unemployed: By Donation \nFROM RESISTANCE TO FREEDOM: STRUGGLES FOR SELF-DETERMINATION FROM ROJAVA TO BRITISH COLUMBIA \nThe Kurdish regions of northern Syria (Rojava) are conducting a remarkable social experiment. In brief\, in the vacuum created by the Syrian civil war\, Rojava is experimenting with a form of organization that might best be viewed as ‘anarchist’\, or to use a newer variation\, ‘communalist’. The key ingredients in this revolutionary process stress the absolute equality of all peoples regardless of sex\, gender\, race\, or ethnicity. Building a truly sustainable relationship between people and the environment is a key concept termed “social ecology”. Decision making in Rojava is bottom up across the board. Individual regions of Rojava\, cantons\, have voluntarily chosen to confederate. Rojava has its own armed forces to protect the people of the region that is structured into a people’s militia called the YPG. A separate wing of the YPG is a women’s militia\, the YPJ. In both\, officers are elected by their soldiers. Remarkably\, the YPG and YPJ operating with very few resources have been the most effective fighters against ISIS. Indeed\, not only have the YPG/YPJ largely driven ISIS from Kurdish territory\, the Rojavan Revolution philosophically stands as the polar opposite to the medieval barbarism of ISIS. \nThe revolution in Rojava is broadly based on the seminal writings of the late American political theorist Murray Bookchin. It combines the concepts of social ecology of Bookchin with the notion of ‘democratic confederalism’ as it has evolved from the work of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. The latter in adopting an anarchist position realized that the Kurdish people do not necessarily need to have the formal structure of a ‘state’ in order to develop their own autonomous and free society. \nIn spite of the current success of the revolution\, few people in North America know much about Rojava or the revolution there. Even for many on the ‘left’ the nature of the revolution is not well understood. In fact\, the events Rojava are sometime viewed through a rather dogmatic perspective that equates the help the YPG has received from the United States/NATO with Rojava having become a participant in a new form of ‘neo-colonialism’ for the region. This view is quite incorrect\, but speaks to the need for a broader understanding of the events in the region and their historical context\, particularly amongst those on the left. \nRojavans view their revolution not only as the best way forward for themselves\, but also as a potential model for other communities\, especially those struggling for autonomy. Whether this revolution will survive\, however\, is very much the current question. In recent days\, the circumstances on the ground have changed dramatically. Turkey has moved its army into the region and brought in auxiliary jihadi fighters in an attempt to block the YPG and roll back the Rojavan revolution. \nCONFERENCE THEMES: \nHistory of the Rojavan Revolution\n– The Kurds and the search for sovereignty and autonomy;\n– Abdullah Ocalan\, Murray Bookchin: Democratic confederalism and social ecology;\n– Tev Dem and the emergence of Rojavan democracy. \nFighting for the revolution\n– The YPG/YPJ and the fight for Rojava and the revolution;\n– ISIS\, Syria\, and Turkey: what the future holds. \nStruggles for Autonomy in British Columbia and Canada (and elsewhere)\n– BC First Nations communities;\n– Environmental protection;\n– The ongoing and looming battles. \nDoes the Revolution in Rojava have lessons for us here?\n– Democratic confederalism and the Canadian state. \nSPEAKERS: \n– Nissy Arif\, teacher and Kurdish activist.\n– Cody Bergerud\, Victoria based activist and former YPG medic and participant in Tev-Dem.\n– Alex Moreau & Baz Andok (nom de guerre)\, Vancouver based veterans of YPG and Tactical Medical Unit (TMU).\n– Firat Kabak Batman (nom de guerre)\, Swedish Kurd who is serving in the TMU.\n– Chris Shaw\, Vancouver-based activist.\n– Kanahus Manuel\, Ts’Peten Defense Committee.\n– Steven Henderson\, Vancouver-based communalist.\n– Ama Tierney\, US based journalist and activist. \nModerator/Facilitator: Stephen Collis \nSCHEDULE: \n10:30AM–10:40AM: Stephen Collis (facilitator)\, Opening remarks and structure for the meeting \n10:40AM–11:10AM: Nissy Arif \n11:10AM–11:40AM: Cody Bergerud \n11:40AM–12:20PM: Alex Moreau\, Baz Andok\, and Firat Kabak Batman (or alternate\, TBD) \n12:20PM–12-30PM: Coffee/bathroom break \n12:30PM–12:50PM: Chris Shaw and Baz Andok \n12:50PM–1:30PM: Lunch break \n1:30PM–2:00PM: Steve Henderson \n2:00PM–2:30PM: Kanahus Manuel (or alternate\, TBD) \n2:30PM–3:00PM: Ama Tierney \n3:00PM–3:15PM: Coffee/Bathroom break \n3:15PM–4:15PM: Panel and general discussion (can go to 4:30 if there is sufficient interest) \n5:00PM: End
