SUMMARY:Workshop: Self Empathy and Communication Skills
DESCRIPTION:Do you take a moment to check in with yourself and you are met with a chorus of conflicting voices? \nHow do you navigate this inner landscape and find your way to a sense of peace and clarity? \nIn this workshop you will learn a concrete framework and set of skills to meet your experience in a way that opens the door to compassion and wise discernment. \nInternal conflict and external stressors leave you feeling depleted and confused. You need a new way through. You have likely given a lot to others and are ready to give some gifts to yourself. It’s difficult to know what you really need and how you thrive\, especially when social conditioning exhorts you to maintain an external focus. \nIn facing difficult situations or even your own high standards\, you can sometimes have an inner committee of thoughts and feelings pulling you different directions. Trying to make sense of it can be tiring work. You need a break from internal processing that goes in circles and self-analysis that leaves you feeling disconnected. \nIn this one day workshop you will learn to make sense of your internal world with a simple and direct framework that also enables you to meet yourself with compassion. You will practice identifying your feelings and needs and committing to effective action. In the framework of Nonviolent Communication (NVC)\, this is called self-empathy. \nSelf-empathy is a subtle skill that teaches compassionate witnessing of your experience (mindfulness). Learning self-empathy isn’t about affirmations or trying to talk yourself out of your feelings. It’s about identifying disconnecting thoughts\, beliefs\, habits\, and old stories\, and finding the way to your heart’s longing. \nAs you learn the skill of self-empathy it gets easier to translate self-critical thoughts and judgments of others into feelings and needs and the actions to meet needs. Over time\, you find that you don’t take things so personally and that you have more confidence in meeting difficult situations. \nJoin us for this one day workshop and learn and practice coming into compassionate relationship with yourself. Keep scrolling down for workshop content. \nWHAT TO EXPECT: \nFirst Half of the Afternoon: We will begin by naming and defining the foundational elements that make self-empathy practice accessible. These elements are: \n• Inner Compassionate Witness: This means having a “you” that can step back from your experience and notice what’s happening with gentleness.\n• Commitment/Intention: the practice of choosing moment by moment to pursue truth\, joy\, love\, & well-being.\n• Self-study: How do you thrive? How do you block nourishment? Recognizing feelings and needs\, & recognizing patterns.\n• Skills: Learn to practice an inner dialogue structure. Learn to name feelings\, and needs\, and make specific requests.\n• Practice: Maintain consistent engagement in that which supports your thriving.\n• Fluid Access to Core Truths: This means that you are able to easily articulate the core truths that contribute a thriving life. \nSecond Half of the Afternoon: Facing Others’ Reactivity and Staying Centered \nWe will now turn our attention toward external situations that trigger reactivity and how to stay connected to yourself in those difficult situations. We will start by naming common triggers. In addition to the self-empathy skills you have been practicing\, I will demonstrate some ways that make it easier to access those skills when someone is in front of you and you feel pressure to respond. \nResponding to Shame\, Guilt\, Anger\, and Depression \nShame\, guilt\, anger\, and depression are important alarm feelings. They indicate that a certain kind of thinking is happening for you. Specifically\, with shame\, you are having some version of a thought that you are a bad person. With guilt you are having some version of a thought that you should or shouldn’t have behaved in a particular way. For anger you are having some version of a thought that others or life should or shouldn’t be as it is. For depression\, you are having some version of a thought that you should or shouldn’t have certain feelings and needs. These feelings only arise in relationship to a cherished need or value\, so it’s essential to be able to turn towards these feelings and connect with the life giving energy underneath. \nAppreciation/Celebration and Responding to the Inner Committee \nAn important part of creating a consistent compassionate inner dialogue is the practice of noticing when needs are met. This means giving as much reflection and attention to yourself when you are thriving as when you are struggling. You will practice three different formats for appreciating and celebrating yourself. \nAt the end of the class\, we will do a closing circle and talk about next steps in your practice. \nWe will take two 30 minute breaks during the day. If they win\, we win. \nWhat is an IntersAction? \nIt’s an action where we flood an intersection on all sides with people crossing (on the light) with signs and banners without stopping the flow of traffic. This way we can be seen by the most people. \nStop Kinder Morgan November 19th\nWe will be handing out leaflets to pedestrians and drivers for the November 19th Stop Kinder Morgan Rally and March. DESCRIPTION:We acknowledge that this event\, our organizing\, words and beings occurs on the occupied\, traditional\, ancestral\, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples – specifically the sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations.\nWe also acknowledge that acts of systemic colonization against indigenous folks are currently taking place in an ongoing manner within institutions\, power structures and language use. We must partake in recognizing our positions and complicity in settler colonialism on these stolen ancestral lands. \nNovember 2nd is the Cross-Canada Student Day of Action and the UBC Social Justice Centre\, the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) & the Young Communist League (YCL-Van) join individuals and groups around the country to organize against the price tag placed on education. Students who are being disproportionally pushed out of institutions of education are Indigenous\, racialized\, queer\, trans* & differently abled folks who are financially struggling – our education system must not further marginalize these groups by blocking their entryway into universities simply because they are unable to fill certain pockets with paper bills. \nThis violence must be stopped and we must show our discontent with these systems of exclusion. \nMany Indigenous folks are waiting to be granted scholarships & bursaries just be to considered into this school\, which was non-consensually built and profits on their ancestral lands. Many immigrants and refugees do not have the monetary ability to have access to education systems. These are acts of horrific violence and are only some reasons of why free education is needed. \nPublic education is under attack across Canada. The government in Newfoundland and Labrador has ended the freeze on tuition fees and reintroduced student loans instead of grants\, while making cuts to Memorial University in its recent budget. In Nova Scotia\, increases in government funding to Post-Secondary Education are capped at 1% (well below inflation)\, and universities are now allowed to increase tuition fees by more than 3% a year\, with the excuse of making “market adjustments.” In Ontario\, the Liberal government is committed to a Funding Formula Review\, that will be disastrous unless students mobilize in a province that already has the highest tuition fees in the country. In Quebec\, tuition fees are increasing with inflation while the Liberal government there cuts funding to university and CÉGEP education. In BC\, where tuition fees were doubled in four years after they were deregulated a decade ago\, the cuts have continued with per student funding remaining far below 2001 levels. \nThe list of attacks on public education continues in every province\, with most provinces facing yearly increasing tuition fees. All governments\, alongside their friends in the senior administration of colleges and universities\, are pushing for academic and learning environments to be increasingly tied to the interests of big business.\nThe Trudeau Liberals have also continued colonialism in education by underfunding the Post-Secondary Student Support Program\, forcing Indigenous students to not receive their treaty right to free education. \nA Federal Post-Secondary Act\, would enforce standards for public education to be set in all provinces. It would make private education illegal\, meaning educational institutions could not accept money from private tuition fees or private donations. This act\, must also respect the rights for Indigenous nations\, Quebec\, and Acadia\, to have self-determination over their own management of institutions and curriculum of education\, while providing adequate public funding. \nWe have seen pockets of important mobilizations across Canada. Recently\, students showed solidarity with teaching assistants and sessionals on strike for a living wage at UofT and York\, the I Am a Student Movement at UBC built momentum against increases to residence fees and international student fees\, the Quebec student movement alongside CÉGEP teachers has been combatting budget cuts\, and in Newfoundland and Labrador\, a mass movement is growing against austerity\, with students playing a key role.” \nWe are not only notifying you of this event\, but also urging you in join us in expressing our solidarity\, emotions\, voices and hands to bring to light this pressing issue. Raised primarily in the traditions of the Musqueam people\, the Grant family and their story reveals the shared struggles of migrants and Aboriginal peoples today and in the past. \nThis film helps to record and revitalize the interconnected histories of Chinese Canadian and First Nations relations along the Fraser River in British Columbia. Dating as far back as the 19th century\, relations between Chinese and First Nations in Canada were often respectful and mutually beneficial; both peoples supported one another in the face of marginalization and racism. \nThe Chinese market gardening history in the Musqueam community is an important historical example of reciprocal relationships between Chinese and First Nations\, and the respect many early Chinese migrants showed as guests on First Nations’ territories. The film features siblings Helen Callbreath\, Gordon Grant\, Larry Grant\, and Howard E. Grant\, who are elders from the Musqueam Nation with Chinese ancestry. DESCRIPTION:Stand in solidarity with Guatemalan and community activist Adolfo Garcia and his Guatemalan counsel\, Rafael Maldonado from the Centre for Environmental\, Social and Legal Action (CALAS) on November 1st at 9 am when they will be at the BC Court of Appeals. Together with their legal counsel in Vancouver\, they will urge the court to accept jurisdiction and hear the case against Tahoe Resources’ Escobal silver mine for the armed attack against him and six others in April 2013. The seven claimants in the case against Tahoe are supported in Canada by Vancouver law firm Camp Fiorante Matthews Mogerman (CFM) and the Canadian Centre for International Justice (CCIJ). \n***\nAdolfo Garcia is 1 of 7 men who were shot during a peaceful protest in April 2013 outside of Tahoe Resources’ Escobal silver mine. The men\, residents of San Rafael Las Flores\, where the company’s Escobal mine is located\, allege that Tahoe is legally responsible for the violence inflicted on them. \nAlberto Rotondo\, former military officer from Peru and head of security for Tahoe at the time of the incident\, was previously under arrest in Guatemala awaiting trial for allegedly ordering security guards to fire at protesters and then covering up the evidence. In November 2015\, he fled the country\, since which time he was rearrested in his native Peru. Guatemala has initiated an extradition process in order to eventually continue with his prosecution. \nNotably\, the legal cases against Tahoe Resources are being carried out in a larger context of opposition to the Escobal mine. To date\, sixteen locally-convened referenda have been held in which tens of thousands of people in the seven municipalities closest to the project have voted against the Escobal mine given their concerns over current and potential environmental and social impacts. In brief\, in the vacuum created by the Syrian civil war\, Rojava is experimenting with a form of organization that might best be viewed as ‘anarchist’\, or to use a newer variation\, ‘communalist’. The key ingredients in this revolutionary process stress the absolute equality of all peoples regardless of sex\, gender\, race\, or ethnicity. Building a truly sustainable relationship between people and the environment is a key concept termed “social ecology”. Decision making in Rojava is bottom up across the board. Individual regions of Rojava\, cantons\, have voluntarily chosen to confederate. Rojava has its own armed forces to protect the people of the region that is structured into a people’s militia called the YPG. A separate wing of the YPG is a women’s militia\, the YPJ. In both\, officers are elected by their soldiers. Remarkably\, the YPG and YPJ operating with very few resources have been the most effective fighters against ISIS. Indeed\, not only have the YPG/YPJ largely driven ISIS from Kurdish territory\, the Rojavan Revolution philosophically stands as the polar opposite to the medieval barbarism of ISIS. \nThe revolution in Rojava is broadly based on the seminal writings of the late American political theorist Murray Bookchin. It combines the concepts of social ecology of Bookchin with the notion of ‘democratic confederalism’ as it has evolved from the work of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. The latter in adopting an anarchist position realized that the Kurdish people do not necessarily need to have the formal structure of a ‘state’ in order to develop their own autonomous and free society. \nIn spite of the current success of the revolution\, few people in North America know much about Rojava or the revolution there. Even for many on the ‘left’ the nature of the revolution is not well understood. In fact\, the events Rojava are sometime viewed through a rather dogmatic perspective that equates the help the YPG has received from the United States/NATO with Rojava having become a participant in a new form of ‘neo-colonialism’ for the region. This view is quite incorrect\, but speaks to the need for a broader understanding of the events in the region and their historical context\, particularly amongst those on the left. \nRojavans view their revolution not only as the best way forward for themselves\, but also as a potential model for other communities\, especially those struggling for autonomy. Whether this revolution will survive\, however\, is very much the current question. In recent days\, the circumstances on the ground have changed dramatically. In the past weeks they have boarded fish farms\, held cleansing ceremonies\, and found hard video evidence of the impacts these feedlots have on wild salmon. \nFor nearly 30 years\, this nation has opposed all fish farms in their waters. Despite this lack of consent\, the Provincial and Federal governments have placed 1/3rd of the fish farming industry on their traditional territory. \nWith the introduction of this industry the wild salmon stocks have been disappearing. SUMMARY:Why BDS matters: A Town Hall Discussion about Illegal Occupation
DESCRIPTION:At its August 2016 convention in Ottawa the Green Party of Canada passed a policy resolution to become the first (and only) party with representation in the House of Commons to publicly support elements of the Palestinian-led call for boycott\, divestment\, and sanctions (BDS) to pressure Israel to respect international law\, and oppose efforts to “prohibit\, punish or otherwise deter expressions of support for BDS.” \nThe Green Party quickly came under intense pressure from pro-Israeli organizations for its democratic adoption of the resolution. Green Party Leader Elizabeth May reacted by expressing her disagreement with the resolution\, firing three members of her shadow cabinet who publicly supported the resolution\, and calling a “special general meeting” on December 3-4 in Calgary to revisit\, and potentially reverse\, the resolution. \nThis public town hall is an opportunity for students\, the general public\, members of all political parties\, and Green Party members of all perspectives on the resolution to learn more about the reality and aims of the Palestinian-led call for boycott\, divestment\, and sanctions (BDS)\, why the Green Party resolution is significant\, and what can be done to support BDS and the resolution. \nThe evening will feature presentations by Dimitri Lascaris\, former Justice Critic of the Green Party of Canada Shadow Cabinet and author and submitter of the resolution; Sid Shniad\, co-chair of Independent Jewish Voices and Audrey Siegl\, Musqueam leader and activist. The panel talk will be followed by ample time for discussion and debate from attendees. \nThis is a free event\, donations are gratefully accepted to offset costs of the event. \nOrganized by Canada Palestine Association\, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East and the Campaign to Defend the Green Party of Canada’s BDS Policy. \nAbout the speakers: \nDIMITRI LASCARIS was the author and submitter of the Green Party resolution on “Palestinian Self-Determination and the Movement for Boycott\, Divestment and Sanctions” and was justice critic in the Green Party of Canada Shadow Cabinet before he was removed in September by leader Elizabeth May. \nHe graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 1991\, and is a practicing lawyer called to the bars of Ontario\, the State of New York\, and the Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York. He graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 1991. In 2012\, Canadian Lawyer Magazine identified Mr. Lascaris as one of the 25 most influential lawyers in Canada\, and in 2013\, Canadian Business Magazine identified him as one of the 50 most influential people in Canadian business. \nLascaris is Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Unity Project for the Relief of Homelessness\, and is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Real News Network\, an independent\, not-for-profit media organization based in Baltimore\, Maryland. He previously served as a Board member of Toronto 350.org. \nIn the 2015 federal election\, he ran as the Green Party candidate in the riding of London West. \nSID SHNIAD is a member\, national steering committee\nIndependent Jewish Voices Canada \nAUDREY SIEGL (ancestral name sχɬemtəna:t) lived in East Van\, where she was raised by a single father of East Indian and British heritage\, and by her mother’s Musqueam family. In recent years she has moved back to the Musqueam Indian Reserve in a process of reconnecting with maternal and ancestral ties\, where she has worked in the Musqueam Language and Culture Department to revitalize hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language. \nShe currently lives and works on the reserve\, located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River. The reserve is a beautiful but very small portion of traditional Musqueam territory. In recent years Audrey has been an active in the Idle No More movement. She was also involved in organizing the protection of c̓əsnaʔəm (Marpole Midden) in 2012\, the homeless Tent City in Oppenheimer Park\, stood for Vancouver City Council in the last civic election and most recently works with Green Peace.
