Please email admin@sfpirg.ca with inquiries. \nWhile we cannot ensure a fully scent-free event in this setting\, we’re aiming to create a scent-reduced environment by not bringing additional scents into the space. Exposure to laundry products\, colognes\, hairspray\, and many other scented products can trigger serious health reactions in individuals with asthma\, allergies\, migraines\, and/or chemical sensitivities. We ask that you not wear/ apply/ or bring any scented products into this space. If you do so\, we may need to ask you to leave so others can safely stay in the space. If you find yourself being impacted by someone’s use of scented products during the conference\, speak with any one of the organizers. We know that this can be a big step for many people. As Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha says in Fragrance Free Femme of Colour Realness\, “Cutting out scents may seem like a pain in the ass\, but it means that awesome\, ass-kicking community members you love can attend events you’re at and make out with you without having seizures\, throwing up or otherwise getting really sick.” Please\, bring your amazing self\, and keep the scents at home!\n(More info here: http://thinkbeforeyoustink.com/howtogofragrancefree.html\, http://www.brownstargirl.org/blog/fragrance-free-femme-of-colour-realness-draft-15\, http://eastbaymeditation.org/accessibility/scentfree.html) \nThe event is nut-free and peanut-free. Absolutely no nuts or peanuts will be permitted within the event space in order to create an allergen-free environment for all participants. This includes (but is not limited to) products like hazelnuts\, cashews\, almonds\, coconuts\, walnuts\, coconut oil\, coconut milk\, and peanut butter. \nIf you have any other allergies or sensitivities that we need to know about so that you can participate fully and safely\, please let us know at info@sfpirg.ca. \nUnfortunately\, we are unable to provide ASL interpretation for this event. \nSome folks are sensitive and/or get sick from electromagnetic frequency radiation (EMF). This can include radiation from cell phones\, Wi-Fi\, fluorescent lights\, and more. SFU Burnaby has Wi-Fi set up throughout its campus\, including in the SFPIRG lounge. In order to reduce EMF exposure\, we will strive to minimize fluorescent light usage and utilize natural lighting whenever possible. \nIf there is any other way we can make this event more accessible for you\, please let us know at info@sfpirg.ca! \n*** \nACCESSIBILITY AUDIT: \nFor some specific info about the lounge and parts of the rest of the campus\, check out the following audit of SFPIRG (Simon Fraser Public Interest Research Group) which was performed in July 2012 by the Radical Access Mapping Project\, with assistance and support from Kalamity Hildebrandt and the rest of the staff at SFPIRG. This audit reflects the SFPIRG lounge space where the event will be\, as well as elevators and other entries to the buildings. \nComplete Audit Package In One Link: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B81n0augDG8kfndnMUgzZDR0dXJHN3Y4ZHlYZFQwckZteWt2WWl3TFRMU3RXTXBpRnQ2NXM&usp=sharing\n– – –\nOr you can check out the individual pieces:\nOverview – Just the Basics: https://docs.google.com/document/d/11teslteGoGt8SANLk812FlTEInFTjRTMJMpAfETEkBI/edit?usp=sharing \nFull Audit – The Nitty Gritty: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gkO99j-yH8oNYEE3Ed0I75obBd_biERBZ89GRzL2J7E/edit?usp=sharing\n– – –\nYou can learn more about the Mapping Project\, including captioned videos\, and other resources here\nhttps://radicalaccessiblecommunities.wordpress.com/the-radical-access-mapping-project/ \nand find copies of most existing audits in this publicly available folder:\nhttps://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B81n0augDG8kU2NfRlZSa3pIQ00&usp=sharing \nIf you would like a space audited\, or have questions about accessibilit/ies in general or this audit in particular\, please contact rampvancouver@gmail.com

SUMMARY:NOV.2 -Day of Action against the Price Tag on Education at UBC
DESCRIPTION:We acknowledge that this event\, our organizing\, words and beings occurs on the occupied\, traditional\, ancestral\, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples – specifically the sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations.\nWe also acknowledge that acts of systemic colonization against indigenous folks are currently taking place in an ongoing manner within institutions\, power structures and language use. We must partake in recognizing our positions and complicity in settler colonialism on these stolen ancestral lands. \nNovember 2nd is the Cross-Canada Student Day of Action and the UBC Social Justice Centre\, the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) & the Young Communist League (YCL-Van) join individuals and groups around the country to organize against the price tag placed on education. Students who are being disproportionally pushed out of institutions of education are Indigenous\, racialized\, queer\, trans* & differently abled folks who are financially struggling – our education system must not further marginalize these groups by blocking their entryway into universities simply because they are unable to fill certain pockets with paper bills. \nThis violence must be stopped and we must show our discontent with these systems of exclusion. \nMany Indigenous folks are waiting to be granted scholarships & bursaries just be to considered into this school\, which was non-consensually built and profits on their ancestral lands. Many immigrants and refugees do not have the monetary ability to have access to education systems. These are acts of horrific violence and are only some reasons of why free education is needed. \nPublic education is under attack across Canada. The government in Newfoundland and Labrador has ended the freeze on tuition fees and reintroduced student loans instead of grants\, while making cuts to Memorial University in its recent budget. In Nova Scotia\, increases in government funding to Post-Secondary Education are capped at 1% (well below inflation)\, and universities are now allowed to increase tuition fees by more than 3% a year\, with the excuse of making “market adjustments.” In Ontario\, the Liberal government is committed to a Funding Formula Review\, that will be disastrous unless students mobilize in a province that already has the highest tuition fees in the country. In Quebec\, tuition fees are increasing with inflation while the Liberal government there cuts funding to university and CÉGEP education. In BC\, where tuition fees were doubled in four years after they were deregulated a decade ago\, the cuts have continued with per student funding remaining far below 2001 levels. \nThe list of attacks on public education continues in every province\, with most provinces facing yearly increasing tuition fees. All governments\, alongside their friends in the senior administration of colleges and universities\, are pushing for academic and learning environments to be increasingly tied to the interests of big business.\nThe Trudeau Liberals have also continued colonialism in education by underfunding the Post-Secondary Student Support Program\, forcing Indigenous students to not receive their treaty right to free education. \nA Federal Post-Secondary Act\, would enforce standards for public education to be set in all provinces. It would make private education illegal\, meaning educational institutions could not accept money from private tuition fees or private donations. This act\, must also respect the rights for Indigenous nations\, Quebec\, and Acadia\, to have self-determination over their own management of institutions and curriculum of education\, while providing adequate public funding. \nWe have seen pockets of important mobilizations across Canada. Recently\, students showed solidarity with teaching assistants and sessionals on strike for a living wage at UofT and York\, the I Am a Student Movement at UBC built momentum against increases to residence fees and international student fees\, the Quebec student movement alongside CÉGEP teachers has been combatting budget cuts\, and in Newfoundland and Labrador\, a mass movement is growing against austerity\, with students playing a key role.” \nWe are not only notifying you of this event\, but also urging you in join us in expressing our solidarity\, emotions\, voices and hands to bring to light this pressing issue. We are students\, not ATMS. \nThis rally will be happening on November 2nd from 12–1 PM\, starting at the Flagpole by the Rose Garden and finishing off by the Nest to listen to some leaders\, organizers and passionate social justice warriors expressing their views on conditional educational systems. \nWith solidarity\, love and resilience\, the UBC Social Justice Centre \nMore info on Day of Action nationwide: http://www.cfs-fcee.ca/the_issues \nHuffington Post on the urgency of free tuition: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/bilan-arte/the-case-for-free-tuition_b_12516930.html?ncid=engmodushpmg00000004

SUMMARY:All Our Father's Relations: An Evening of Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:“All Our Father’s Relations”: Stories of Shared Chinese and First Nations Heritage: \nCome join us for an evening of storytelling about the intertwining heritage of First Nations and Chinese communities in BC\, inspired by the exciting new documentary film All Our Father’s Relations from Producer Sarah Wai Yee Ling and Director Al Yoshizawa of Right Relations. \nMeet and speak with key storytellers from the film Larry Grant and Howard E. Grant\, the filmmakers Sarah Ling and Al Yoshizawa\, Hayne Wai from the Chinese Canadian Historical Society\, see select clips\, and hear from other notable local figures with stories of First Nations and Chinese joint history. \nPresented by the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden as part of theHeart of the City Festival\, and in partnership with the Vancouver Asian Film Festival\, Hapa-palooza Festival\, and Chinese Canadian Historical Society of British Columbia. \nWe are also excited to announce the world premiere of All Our Father’s Relations at the. Vancouver Asian Film Festival on Sunday\, November 6 at 4:30PM. \nTickets are now available here on a first come\, first served basis:\nhttp://festival.vaff.org/2016/section/november-6/ \nFacebook event for the premiere:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/199696843786080/ \nAbout the film: \n“All Our Father’s Relations (祖根父脈) tells the story of the Grant siblings who journey from Vancouver to China in an attempt to rediscover their father’s roots and better understand his fractured relationship with their Musqueam mother. Raised primarily in the traditions of the Musqueam people\, the Grant family and their story reveals the shared struggles of migrants and Aboriginal peoples today and in the past. \nThis film helps to record and revitalize the interconnected histories of Chinese Canadian and First Nations relations along the Fraser River in British Columbia. Dating as far back as the 19th century\, relations between Chinese and First Nations in Canada were often respectful and mutually beneficial; both peoples supported one another in the face of marginalization and racism. \nThe Chinese market gardening history in the Musqueam community is an important historical example of reciprocal relationships between Chinese and First Nations\, and the respect many early Chinese migrants showed as guests on First Nations’ territories. The film features siblings Helen Callbreath\, Gordon Grant\, Larry Grant\, and Howard E. Grant\, who are elders from the Musqueam Nation with Chinese ancestry. The siblings reflect on their experiences growing up on the Chinese farms at Musqueam and in Vancouver’s Chinatown\, and the impact of discriminatory government legislation on their lives. They also visit the ancestral village of their late father\, in Guangdong\, China\, for the first time. The Grants’ father\, Hong Tim Hing\, left the village of Sei Moon in Guangdong\, China in 1920 to Vancouver\, BC – the unceded territory of the Musqueam hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-speaking people. He worked on the Lin On Farm at Musqueam Indian Reserve 2\, where he met his wife\, Agnes Grant. ” –www.allourfathersrelations.com

SUMMARY:Tahoe on Trial! Courthouse Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:Stand in solidarity with Guatemalan and community activist Adolfo Garcia and his Guatemalan counsel\, Rafael Maldonado from the Centre for Environmental\, Social and Legal Action (CALAS) on November 1st at 9 am when they will be at the BC Court of Appeals. Together with their legal counsel in Vancouver\, they will urge the court to accept jurisdiction and hear the case against Tahoe Resources’ Escobal silver mine for the armed attack against him and six others in April 2013. The seven claimants in the case against Tahoe are supported in Canada by Vancouver law firm Camp Fiorante Matthews Mogerman (CFM) and the Canadian Centre for International Justice (CCIJ). \n***\nAdolfo Garcia is 1 of 7 men who were shot during a peaceful protest in April 2013 outside of Tahoe Resources’ Escobal silver mine. The men\, residents of San Rafael Las Flores\, where the company’s Escobal mine is located\, allege that Tahoe is legally responsible for the violence inflicted on them. \nAlberto Rotondo\, former military officer from Peru and head of security for Tahoe at the time of the incident\, was previously under arrest in Guatemala awaiting trial for allegedly ordering security guards to fire at protesters and then covering up the evidence. In November 2015\, he fled the country\, since which time he was rearrested in his native Peru. Guatemala has initiated an extradition process in order to eventually continue with his prosecution. \nNotably\, the legal cases against Tahoe Resources are being carried out in a larger context of opposition to the Escobal mine. To date\, sixteen locally-convened referenda have been held in which tens of thousands of people in the seven municipalities closest to the project have voted against the Escobal mine given their concerns over current and potential environmental and social impacts. The violence\, repression\, and criminalization community leaders continue to face is not limited to what transpired on April 27\, 2013. Find more information here: tahoeontrial.net.

SUMMARY:Tonight! Ask & Answer Tour with Vivek Shraya + Chase Joynt
DESCRIPTION:Critical Studies in Sexuality and the Faculty of Education: Teacher Education for All! present: \nASK & ANSWER features award-winning\, multidisciplinary artists Chase Joynt and Vivek Shraya\, presenting their new books—Joynt’s first book You Only Live Twice (Coach House Books)\, and Shraya’s debut collection of poetry\, even this page is white (Arsenal Pulp Press). \nMonday\, October 31\, 4PM\nPonderosa Commons Ballroom\n6445 University Boulevard\, UBC\nDirections: https://goo.gl/maps/yLqdTXf9Qgp \nYour RSVP is always appreciated: http://grsj.arts.ubc.ca/ask-answer-tour/ \n– – – \n“You Only Live Twice” \nWhat if it’s not true that you only live once? In this genre-transcending book\, trans writer and media artist Chase Joynt and HIV-positive movie artist Mike Hoolboom come together over the films of Chris Marker to exchange transition tales\, confessional missives that map out the particularities of occupying what they call ‘second lives’: Chase’s transition from female to male and Mike’s near-death from AIDS. \nWeaving cultural theory with memoir and media analysis\, YOLT asks intimate questions about what it might mean to find love and hope through conversation across generations. \n“even this page is white” \nVivek Shraya’s debut collection of poetry\, even this page is white\, is a bold\, timely and personal interrogation of skin—its origins\, functions and limitations. Poems that range in style from starkly concrete to limber break down the barriers that prevent understanding of what it means to be racialized. Shraya paints the face of everyday racism with words\, rendering it visible\, tangible and undeniable. \nFeatured in the CBC documentary Where Have All The Poets Gone? \n– – – \nCHASE JOYNT is a Toronto-based moving-image artist and writer whose work utilizes strategies of first person engagement to interrogate representations of gender and violence. Recently awarded the EP Canada/Canada Film Capital Award for Emerging Canadian Artist and jury awards for Best Documentary and Best Short\, Chase’s work continues to be exhibited internationally. In 2013\, Chase starred as Mars Brito\, the lead character in John Greyson’s Murder in Passing\, which is widely regarded as the most ambitious transmedia public narrative project available on public screens worldwide. Murder in Passing is currently being made into a feature film. His next two film projects\, Between You and Me and Genderize\, are forthcoming from CBC Docs in Summer 2016. \nVIVEK SHRAYA is a Toronto-based artist whose body of work includes several albums\, films\, and books. Her first novel\, She of the Mountains\, was named one of The Globe and Mail’s Best Books of 2014. Her debut collection of poetry\, even this page is white\, was released this spring\, and her first children’s picture book\, The Boy & the Bindi\, was published this fall. Vivek has read and performed internationally at shows\, festivals and post-secondary institutions\, including sharing the stage with Tegan & Sara. She is one half of the music duo Too Attached. \n– – – \nWe acknowledge that this event takes place on the traditional\, unceded\, occupied and ancestral homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) First Nation. \nThis event is made possible by the Faculty of Education: Teacher Education for All!\, Equity & Inclusion\, and the Jane Rule Endowment for the Study of Human Relationships\, and has been organized by Critical Studies in Sexuality at The Social Justice Institute.

SUMMARY:Struggles for Self-Determination from Rojava to British Columbia
DESCRIPTION:https://www.sfu.ca/humanities-institute/public-events/conferences/rojava-conf.html \nLocation: room 1700\, SFU Harbour Centre. Both the room and building are wheelchair accessible. \nADMISSION: \nEmployed: $10–20\nStudent/Unemployed: By Donation \nFROM RESISTANCE TO FREEDOM: STRUGGLES FOR SELF-DETERMINATION FROM ROJAVA TO BRITISH COLUMBIA \nThe Kurdish regions of northern Syria (Rojava) are conducting a remarkable social experiment. In brief\, in the vacuum created by the Syrian civil war\, Rojava is experimenting with a form of organization that might best be viewed as ‘anarchist’\, or to use a newer variation\, ‘communalist’. The key ingredients in this revolutionary process stress the absolute equality of all peoples regardless of sex\, gender\, race\, or ethnicity. Building a truly sustainable relationship between people and the environment is a key concept termed “social ecology”. Decision making in Rojava is bottom up across the board. Individual regions of Rojava\, cantons\, have voluntarily chosen to confederate. Rojava has its own armed forces to protect the people of the region that is structured into a people’s militia called the YPG. A separate wing of the YPG is a women’s militia\, the YPJ. In both\, officers are elected by their soldiers. Remarkably\, the YPG and YPJ operating with very few resources have been the most effective fighters against ISIS. Indeed\, not only have the YPG/YPJ largely driven ISIS from Kurdish territory\, the Rojavan Revolution philosophically stands as the polar opposite to the medieval barbarism of ISIS. \nThe revolution in Rojava is broadly based on the seminal writings of the late American political theorist Murray Bookchin. It combines the concepts of social ecology of Bookchin with the notion of ‘democratic confederalism’ as it has evolved from the work of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. The latter in adopting an anarchist position realized that the Kurdish people do not necessarily need to have the formal structure of a ‘state’ in order to develop their own autonomous and free society. \nIn spite of the current success of the revolution\, few people in North America know much about Rojava or the revolution there. Even for many on the ‘left’ the nature of the revolution is not well understood. In fact\, the events Rojava are sometime viewed through a rather dogmatic perspective that equates the help the YPG has received from the United States/NATO with Rojava having become a participant in a new form of ‘neo-colonialism’ for the region. This view is quite incorrect\, but speaks to the need for a broader understanding of the events in the region and their historical context\, particularly amongst those on the left. \nRojavans view their revolution not only as the best way forward for themselves\, but also as a potential model for other communities\, especially those struggling for autonomy. Whether this revolution will survive\, however\, is very much the current question. In recent days\, the circumstances on the ground have changed dramatically. Turkey has moved its army into the region and brought in auxiliary jihadi fighters in an attempt to block the YPG and roll back the Rojavan revolution. \nCONFERENCE THEMES: \nHistory of the Rojavan Revolution\n– The Kurds and the search for sovereignty and autonomy;\n– Abdullah Ocalan\, Murray Bookchin: Democratic confederalism and social ecology;\n– Tev Dem and the emergence of Rojavan democracy. \nFighting for the revolution\n– The YPG/YPJ and the fight for Rojava and the revolution;\n– ISIS\, Syria\, and Turkey: what the future holds. \nStruggles for Autonomy in British Columbia and Canada (and elsewhere)\n– BC First Nations communities;\n– Environmental protection;\n– The ongoing and looming battles. \nDoes the Revolution in Rojava have lessons for us here?\n– Democratic confederalism and the Canadian state. \nSPEAKERS: \n– Nissy Arif\, teacher and Kurdish activist.\n– Cody Bergerud\, Victoria based activist and former YPG medic and participant in Tev-Dem.\n– Alex Moreau & Baz Andok (nom de guerre)\, Vancouver based veterans of YPG and Tactical Medical Unit (TMU).\n– Firat Kabak Batman (nom de guerre)\, Swedish Kurd who is serving in the TMU.\n– Chris Shaw\, Vancouver-based activist.\n– Kanahus Manuel\, Ts’Peten Defense Committee.\n– Steven Henderson\, Vancouver-based communalist.\n– Ama Tierney\, US based journalist and activist. \nModerator/Facilitator: Stephen Collis \nSCHEDULE: \n10:30AM–10:40AM: Stephen Collis (facilitator)\, Opening remarks and structure for the meeting \n10:40AM–11:10AM: Nissy Arif \n11:10AM–11:40AM: Cody Bergerud \n11:40AM–12:20PM: Alex Moreau\, Baz Andok\, and Firat Kabak Batman (or alternate\, TBD) \n12:20PM–12-30PM: Coffee/bathroom break \n12:30PM–12:50PM: Chris Shaw and Baz Andok \n12:50PM–1:30PM: Lunch break \n1:30PM–2:00PM: Steve Henderson \n2:00PM–2:30PM: Kanahus Manuel (or alternate\, TBD) \n2:30PM–3:00PM: Ama Tierney \n3:00PM–3:15PM: Coffee/Bathroom break \n3:15PM–4:15PM: Panel and general discussion (can go to 4:30 if there is sufficient interest) \n5:00PM: End

SUMMARY:Lelu's Voice I Am - Stand with Lax U'u'la against LNG/Petronas!
DESCRIPTION:Calablast Tuesday #21 \nLELU’S VOICE I AM – A night for Lax U’u’la (Lelu Islands) Stand against Petronas LNG. \nNO PIPELINES ON UNCEDED FIRST NATIONS TERRITORY!\n****************************************************\nHosted by & Ft. Performances by:\nMinayMusic\nIan Is Music\n+guests (TBA) \nWere back with a special 21st edition of Calablast our monthly fundraising and local music showcase. This month we’re standing arm in arm with the Lax’walams first nations people in their fight against the Petronas company and our Government’s plans to build an liquified natural gas (LNG) plant on traditional\, unceded Lax Kw’alaams territory. A plan which if carried out would disrupt and destroy fragile and ireplacable fish habitat in Lax U’u’la (Lelu Island) at the mouth of the Skeena river near Prince Rupert\, BC. \nThe shallow eelgrass beds of Flora Bank directly southwest of Lax U’u’la are the most important juvenile fish habitat in the entire Skeena river system for salmon\, steelhead\, and numerous other species of seafood. 88% of all migrating salmon from the Skeena river\, or 330 Million every year\, rely on Flora Bank. 10 Nations and 60 000 people in the Skeena watershed rely on these fish for food\, commercial fishing\, and cultural identity. Lax Kw’alaams Hereditary Chief Yahaan (Donald Wesley) sums up beautifully why we should all be in support of the peaceful occupation of Lax U’u’la (Lelu Island); \n“Our Traditional ways of life and the resources which have sustained our people are not to be pawns in the Christie Clark Government’s LNG dreams. Development within our Traditional territories must have our Free\, Prior and Informed consent. The people of Lax’walams spoke very clearly in their rejection of the 1.25 billion dollar offer from Petronas\, and this camp builds upon that rejection. This issue is not just a First Nations issue but one that will affect all British Columbians\, especially those who rely upon healthy and abundant Fish stocks\, of a variety of species at the mouth of the Skeena River.” – Lax Kw’alaams Hereditary Chief Yahaan (Donald Wesley) \nPlease help the cause by donating to https://www.gofundme.com/lelu_island\nlearn more here\nhttp://www.laxuula.com/why-we-are-occupying and if you can’t donate please like and share their facebook page Stop Pacific NorthWest LNG/Petronas on Lelu Island \nMore about Calablast Tuesday: \nA Monthly Community Showcase – The last Tues of Every Month at Calabash Bistro! \n**Door is ‘By Donation’. SUMMARY:A Fundraiser for Wild Salmon\, Sovereignty and Justice
DESCRIPTION:A Fundraiser for Wild Salmon\, Sovereignty and Justice \n“Our fight against fish farms is for the benefit of all people because wild salmon is the backbone of this coast” \nJoin the Musgamagw Dzawada’nuxw on October 22nd at the Grandview Calvary Church for a night of story telling\, videos\, food & fundraising. \nThe Musgamagw Dzawada’nuxw are on the front lines of evicting fish farms from their traditional territories in BC. In the past weeks they have boarded fish farms\, held cleansing ceremonies\, and found hard video evidence of the impacts these feedlots have on wild salmon. \nFor nearly 30 years\, this nation has opposed all fish farms in their waters. Despite this lack of consent\, the Provincial and Federal governments have placed 1/3rd of the fish farming industry on their traditional territory. \nWith the introduction of this industry the wild salmon stocks have been disappearing. In 2015 alone\, the Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw lost 40% of their wild salmon due to a sea lice outbreak from the farms. \nThere has never been a more important time to stand with the Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw. Since time immemorial they have protected their salmon and herring for future generations. Join them in continuing this legacy and kicking every fish farm out of their territory! \nThe event will include first hand experiences from Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw Hereditary Chief Willie Moon and Councillors Midori Nicolson & Melissa Willie about their fight and short films produced by filmmakers Lindsey Mae Willie & Tamo Campos. \nSaturday\, October 22nd\, 2016\n6:30 pm\nGrandview Calvary Church – 1803 East First Avenue (one bloc East from Commercial Dr)\nWheelchair Accessible\nUnceded Musqueam\, Squamish And Tsleil-Waututh Territory. \nThis event is being organized by grassroots organizers with all proceeds being donated to the Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw. \nwww.cleansingourwaters.com \nWith the support of Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw and Streams of Justice.\nEndorsed by The Wild Salmon Defenders Alliance

SUMMARY:Why BDS matters: A Town Hall Discussion about Illegal Occupation
DESCRIPTION:At its August 2016 convention in Ottawa the Green Party of Canada passed a policy resolution to become the first (and only) party with representation in the House of Commons to publicly support elements of the Palestinian-led call for boycott\, divestment\, and sanctions (BDS) to pressure Israel to respect international law\, and oppose efforts to “prohibit\, punish or otherwise deter expressions of support for BDS.” \nThe Green Party quickly came under intense pressure from pro-Israeli organizations for its democratic adoption of the resolution. Green Party Leader Elizabeth May reacted by expressing her disagreement with the resolution\, firing three members of her shadow cabinet who publicly supported the resolution\, and calling a “special general meeting” on December 3-4 in Calgary to revisit\, and potentially reverse\, the resolution. \nThis public town hall is an opportunity for students\, the general public\, members of all political parties\, and Green Party members of all perspectives on the resolution to learn more about the reality and aims of the Palestinian-led call for boycott\, divestment\, and sanctions (BDS)\, why the Green Party resolution is significant\, and what can be done to support BDS and the resolution. \nThe evening will feature presentations by Dimitri Lascaris\, former Justice Critic of the Green Party of Canada Shadow Cabinet and author and submitter of the resolution; Sid Shniad\, co-chair of Independent Jewish Voices and Audrey Siegl\, Musqueam leader and activist. The panel talk will be followed by ample time for discussion and debate from attendees. \nThis is a free event\, donations are gratefully accepted to offset costs of the event. \nOrganized by Canada Palestine Association\, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East and the Campaign to Defend the Green Party of Canada’s BDS Policy. \nAbout the speakers: \nDIMITRI LASCARIS was the author and submitter of the Green Party resolution on “Palestinian Self-Determination and the Movement for Boycott\, Divestment and Sanctions” and was justice critic in the Green Party of Canada Shadow Cabinet before he was removed in September by leader Elizabeth May. \nHe graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 1991\, and is a practicing lawyer called to the bars of Ontario\, the State of New York\, and the Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York. He graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 1991. In 2012\, Canadian Lawyer Magazine identified Mr. Lascaris as one of the 25 most influential lawyers in Canada\, and in 2013\, Canadian Business Magazine identified him as one of the 50 most influential people in Canadian business. \nLascaris is Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Unity Project for the Relief of Homelessness\, and is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Real News Network\, an independent\, not-for-profit media organization based in Baltimore\, Maryland. He previously served as a Board member of Toronto 350.org. \nIn the 2015 federal election\, he ran as the Green Party candidate in the riding of London West. \nSID SHNIAD is a member\, national steering committee\nIndependent Jewish Voices Canada \nAUDREY SIEGL (ancestral name sχɬemtəna:t) lived in East Van\, where she was raised by a single father of East Indian and British heritage\, and by her mother’s Musqueam family. In recent years she has moved back to the Musqueam Indian Reserve in a process of reconnecting with maternal and ancestral ties\, where she has worked in the Musqueam Language and Culture Department to revitalize hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language. \nShe currently lives and works on the reserve\, located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River. The reserve is a beautiful but very small portion of traditional Musqueam territory. In recent years Audrey has been an active in the Idle No More movement. She was also involved in organizing the protection of c̓əsnaʔəm (Marpole Midden) in 2012\, the homeless Tent City in Oppenheimer Park\, stood for Vancouver City Council in the last civic election and most recently works with Green Peace.

SUMMARY:2016 Welfare Food Challenge
DESCRIPTION:This is an invitation to join Raise the Rates’ Annual Welfare Food Challenge in October\, 2016. The previous 4 years of the Challenge were all a great success. The Challenge is for one week\, eating only what can be purchased with the money a welfare recipient receives. \nOver 600 people have so far taken the Challenge and this year\, 2016\, we aim to make it the biggest ever. Raise the Rates is working hard to make poverty an election issue in 2017. \nThe Challenge highlights the inadequacy of welfare rates in BC. A single person receives only $610 a month\, frozen for over 9 years. Raise the Rates\, with others\, is working to raise public awareness of the extreme poverty of people on welfare; and how this poverty costs the people of BC in human suffering and billions of wasted dollars every year. \nParticipants have come from across the province and included families\, school and university students\, elected representatives\, union leaders\, businesspeople\, workers and seniors\, as well as ‘celebrities’ such as Bif Naked. \nThe Challenge will start on World Food Day\, Sunday October 16\, 2016 and run for a full 7 days. Due to the rising cost of rent\, even for single room occupancy (SRO) in the Downtown Eastside participants will be expected to live on only the food they can purchase with $18 dollars (see <a href=”http://Why $18? for calculation). This calculation is based on the expectation that welfare recipients will have to pay rent and damage deposit\, cell phone (necessary to look for work and contact the welfare office) and personal hygiene. We have dropped buying bus tickets\, which is what many people on welfare often do\, so that there is some money left for food. They either walk or hope for the goodwill of bus drivers – which is usually the case\, but they do risk a $173 fine. Out of $610 there is very little money left for food. \nFor more information: https://welfarefoodchallenge.org/\nTo join the challenge: https://welfarefoodchallenge.org/join/ or bill50@vcn.bc.ca
