SUMMARY:Black Space: A Night of Community Healing
DESCRIPTION:This event\, along with the majority of the organizing done by the Black Lives Matter Vancouver Coalition\, will be taking place on the traditional\, ancestral and unceded territory and homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm\, Skxwú7mesh\, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. We are very grateful to these people for the knowledge\, kindness and indomitable spirit with which they have taken care of this land for millennia. \n– – – – – – – \nEvery day\, the list of deaths seems to grow. Every week\, we find ourselves mourning another family member lost to us at the hands of murderers who are institutionally shielded from punishment. Our grief crosses borders. The loss of our parents\, siblings\, spouses\, relatives\, friends\, those we are intimately connected to though we may have never met them – is too much to bear alone. \nOn Wednesday\, October 12\, let us come together as a Black community to mourn those who have been taken too soon by this violent system\, to celebrate our Blackness and our resilience\, and to support one another. \nWe gather together to remember: \nKorryn Gaines\, Tiarah Poyau\, Skye Mockabee\, Abdirahman Abdi\, Jermaine Carby\, Tawon Boyd\, Terence Crutcher\, Keith Lamont Scott\, Alfred Olango… \n…and so many more\, because the list stretches back over 400 years and continues to go on. We gather together to say their names. Violence toward one of us is violence toward all of us. Every time one of us dies\, a piece of all of us dies. \n“It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains.” – Assata Shakur \n– – – – – – – \nTIME: Wednesday\, October 12\, 6-8pm. \nLOCATION: Gallery Gachet\, 88 East Cordova St. \nSpeakers\, performers\, open mic and free dinner. \nWe invite folks from other parts of BC and the West Coast to attend our event and are able to provide accomodation! Please get in touch at blacklivesmattervan@gmail.com! \n* * * Black Lives Matter explicitly and wholeheartedly supports all members of the Black community and endeavours to lift up the voices of those living in the intersections of being Black and further marginalized such as Black women and femmes\, Black trans and queer folks\, Black folks living with disabilities and so on. Therefore\, our intention is to create a safe and welcoming space where homophobia\, transphobia\, sexism and other forms of violence\, lateral or otherwise\, will not be tolerated. \n* * * Please note that this healing space is reserved exclusively for Black folks. Although we will not refuse entrance or remove anyone\, please be respectful of this request\, and understand that for non-Black folks to attend is to disregard the sacred importance of holding Black space.

SUMMARY:Deeds\, Not Words - National Day of Action Victoria
DESCRIPTION:In response to a call-out from Indigenous People’s National Day of Action and Idle No More please come celebrate life\, water\, and show solidarity with Indigenous People who are standing strong to protect the land and water. This is a day to honour all those who are giving so much to protect life and to demand that colonial governments live up to their promises of Nation to Nation relationships and respecting the rights of Indigenous People. \nPlease join us to collectively shape this space together with art\, music\, words and connection. \n12pm – Speakers: TBA\n1pm – Collective emergent art project\, music\, and pop-up workshops! \n<<These events are taking place on Lekwungen territories. We recognize that this is stolen land and that even while violence and colonization against Indigenous peoples and lands continues\, so too does Indigenous resistance\, resilience and resurgence.>> \nBACKGROUND – NATIONAL CALL TO ACTION \nFrom http://www.idlenomore.ca/deed_not_words_call_to_action \nPromises of clean drinking water\, a basic human right. Promises of equal education funding for our children\, another basic human right. Promises of implementing the UNDRIP into Canadian Law\, which had many people doubtful would actually transpire. These are but a few of the so called renewed “Nation to Nation” campaign promises that had indigenous folks clamoring to the elections polls\, many for the first time ever. \nNow those same people are coming to the realization that it was but another trick in our long and deadly “Nation to Nation” relationship with Canada. Across our beautiful shared country\, mega-projects are getting a fast green lights despite very vocal and active opposition from a long list of indigenous communities. Reopening mines and granting permits on lands that have been devastated by tailings spills. Communities continue to be poisoned by water that is wastefully polluted in the name of industry and so called development. Even on the international level this gov’t has gone back on their commitments made to reduce emissions and pushes through dirty\, unsustainable energy at the #COP21. \nIt is quite clear to most of us at this point\, that as far as Indigenous Rights in this country is concerned\, is it business as usual under all of Harper’s destructive policies that never had respect for the First Peoples of this country. No free and prior informed consent (#FPIC) policies have been implemented\, nor will any be any time soon. Unaccessible consultations is still the trick used only under a new name with some new shiny faces. \nSo far the Trudeau gov’t has made a portfolio of photo ops of handshakes. And that is all that is happening for our people. Our communities won’t see any funding for years and in the meantime we will continue to be underfunded and under the current gov’ts thumb. \nWe demand that the Trudeau government to take credible and immediate action to: \n* Implement UNDRIP in Canadian law.\n* Clearly indicate it respects Indigenous Peoples’ right to say no to development on their land. (This means Free\, Prior\, and Informed Consent\, not manipulated sham consultations)\n* Stop the Site C dam\n* Close the funding deficit for First Nations now\n* Stop pipeline\, gas\, and oil megaprojects: build green energy\, transit\, and houses\n* Introduce a climate plan that respects the 1.5-2 degree temperature target that Canada helped negotiate in Paris. Adopting Harper’s emission reduction targets is a betrayal of that commitment.\n* Fully fund Indigenous-owned and controlled renewable energy projects. \nWe ask First Nations and allies on both sides of the medicine line\, on the land or in cities\, to respond to this call by undertaking action\, in accordance with their own capacities\, responsibilities\, and their protocols. This Thanksgiving\, Indigenous communities and supporters will be conducting actions\, holding ceremonies\, and gatherings across Canada to protect land and water and to demand the Trudeau government stop pretending\, and start acting like it respects our rights. SUMMARY:Deeds\, Not Words - Indigenous Day Of Action\, Oct. 10
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Day of Action October 10\nJustin Trudeau\, it is time for DEEDS\, NOT WORDS\, that respect Indigenous rights \n#DeedsNotWords \nFirst Nations in Canada are waking up to the reality that the Trudeau government has a big smiley face for a front man\, but when it comes to business\, nothing has changed. This government approved the Site C mega-Dam in Treaty 8 (BC Peace River region)\, against the objection of First Nations whose lands will be devastated by flooding\, destroying access to their food\, medicines\, and sacred sites. Just this week\, they approved the dangerous and climate-destroying Lelu Island Liquid Natural Gas plant against the wishes of local First Nations. Now under review in Alberta by a system that has never denied a tar sands mine is the Teck Frontier tar sands mine\, which would be the largest ever. The federal government\, which campaigned on implementing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples\, has since informed chiefs from across Canada that adopting UNDRIP is unworkable. Now they have backtracked on their obligations under the Paris climate accords\, too. \nIt is already clear what needs to be done. Canada needs a leader with political integrity and courage to do it. We demand that the Trudeau government to take credible action to: \n● Implement UNDRIP in Canadian law.\n● Clearly indicate it respects Indigenous Peoples’ right to say no to development on their land. (This means Free\, Prior\, and Informed Consent\, not manipulated sham consultations).\n● Stop the Site C dam.\n● Close the funding deficit for First Nations now.\n● Stop pipeline\, gas\, and oil megaprojects: build green energy\, transit\, and houses.\n● Introduce a climate plan that respects the 1.5-2 degree temperature target that Canada helped negotiate in Paris. Adopting Harper’s emission reduction targets is a betrayal of that commitment.\n● Fully fund Indigenous-owned and controlled renewable energy projects. \nAccordingly\, this Thanksgiving\, Indigenous communities and supporters will be conducting actions\, holding ceremonies\, and gatherings across Canada to protect land and water and to demand the Trudeau government stop pretending\, and start acting like it respects our rights. It is high time for deeds\, not words. We ask First Nations and allies on both sides of the medicine line\, on the land or in cities\, to respond to this call by undertaking action\, in accordance with their own capacities\, responsibilities\, and their protocols. \nTo join us please email indigenousdayofaction@gmail.com. \nBackground\nOn matters of substance\, this government is pursuing the same assimilation agenda as previous governments. There has been no change to the disastrous comprehensive claims policy. 150 years of Canada trying to terminate and extinguish Indians has not worked. We are still here and we will still be here hundreds of years from now. Until Canada reckons with\, recognizes\, and respects Indigenous Peoples’ rights and title\, and make legitimate redress for past wrongs\, there will be no lasting peace. \nThis government has still not committed to a plan to undo the deliberate cultural genocide that targeted Indigenous languages and traditions. No serious commitment to Indigenous language revitalization has been put forth. The important recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples have been ignored. \nOptimists believed this government would deliver more money for programs and services. Yet the much vaunted spending announcements of this government will not kick in for years\, and will still leave First Nations gasping\, at poverty-level funding below funding for the average Canadian\, after decades of an arbitrary 2% funding cap that has scrimped First Nations into a $60 billion funding gap. The lack of clean water\, safe housing\, and adequate education\, coupled with abusive government and failure to redress the legacy of cultural genocide\, have produced a profound mental health and suicide epidemic in many communities. \nIn the face of government indifference or hostility\, Indigenous Peoples across Canada and the United States have had to protect their waters and lands from abusive development that violates their duties to protect the land: from hydro dams at Site C in British Columbia\, Keeyask in Manitoba\, and Muskrat Dam in Labrador\, Newfoundland\, to Mi’kmaq people and their allies in Stop Alton Gas protecting the waters of the Sipekne’katik district of the Mi’kmaq Nation; the Algonquins of Barriere Lake in their decades long struggle for their rights against government abuse\, now fighting a Copper One mine being developed on their territory without consent; Neskantaga First Nation\, trying to stop Noront’s Ring of Fire drilling on its land; and Indigenous peoples and allies fighting toxic\, reckless pipeline and oil development in places like Aamjiwnaang\, Kanehsatake\, Unist’ot’en\, Tsleil-Waututh\, Secwepemc territory\, and Standing Rock\, North Dakota. For legitimate defense of their rights\, many Indigenous land and water protectors are criminalized or targeted with legal harassment and intimidation by big corporations\, like Vanessa Gray of Aamjiwnaang\, currently facing expensive court proceedings. \nAs part of this day of action\, we call on Canada to take seriously its obligations under international law\, the Canadian constitution\, and the principles of justice\, and once and for all reconcile itself to our continued existence on this land as Indigenous Peoples. The government has ignored the excellent recommendations of Commission after Commission. Will it ignore the recommendations of the Murdered and Missing Women and Girl’s Inquiry too? Now is the time for Deeds\, not Words. \nWe will be adding local events on our website. There’s no doubt” \nLAL\, the Toronto Electronic duo comprised of Rosina Kazi and Nicolas Murray\, will release its hotly anticipated new full-length album\, Find Safety\, on April 29 through Calgary-based Coax Records. Following that\, LAL will head out for dates across Canada in May and June (see full schedule below). \nThe result of three years of studio work\, Find Safety combines a myriad of influences\, from Fela Kuti and Massive Attack\, to Pete Rock and Detroit Techno. Lyrically\, the album is informed by LAL’s community shows at its west end Toronto performance space\, Unit 2\, as well as Kazi and Murray’s passionate ongoing support of social justice causes and art projects\, with an emphasis on Queer and/or BIPOC issues. The album overall addresses a need to create safer spaces for themselves and their friends\, and musically is a masterful blend of synth and sample-based minimalism. SUMMARY:The Anatomy of the Downtown Metrotown Plan
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, in response to the demovictions crisis that is displacing more than 600 households\, Burnaby City Council announced a new plan for the Metrotown neighbourhood: The “Downtown” Metrotown Plan. \nWhat promises does this plan hold for the existing majority renter community in Metrotown? Come to a public forum about Mayor Corrigan’s plan to turn Metrotown into a “downtown” for Burnaby. \nWe will focus on defining the potential social impact of the plan for more than 3000 apartment units within its scope\, and for the region as a whole\, which is in the midst of a widely acknowledged rental crunch. After discussing the effects of this plan\, we will focus on what we can do to stop it. \nOrganized by Stop Demovictions Burnaby Campaign\nhttp://stopdisplacement.ca/burnaby\ninfo@stopdisplacement.ca\n@stopdisplacemnt

DESCRIPTION:This event will start 630pm \nCoast Salish opening\nSpeakers TBA\nPerformance by: Butterflies in Spirit\nKathara Filipino cultural group\nEntertribal (hiphop duo)\nMore performance TBA\nCandlelight/moment of silence vigil \nNative Womens Association of Canada website info: \nOctober 4th is a day where we honour the lives of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls. The violence experienced by Aboriginal women and girls in Canada is a national tragedy. We must take the time to give thanks to the families who are our reason we all continue to demand action. \nA vigil can take many forms\, from a moment of silence to a rally to a community feast. All that is important is that you take some time on or around October 4th to mark the day. \nWe firmly believe that the October 4th Sisters In Spirit Vigils are a movement for social change. The number of SIS Vigils has grown from 11 in 2006 to an impressive 216 vigils in 2014. \nEach year\, family members\, Aboriginal community members\, and concerned citizens gather for a vigil on October 4th to honour the memory of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls. Vigils take place in many communities across Canada as well as internationally. These gatherings serve to raise awareness and to provide support to families who have lost a loved one.

SUMMARY:Social Justice not Social Entrepreneurs!
DESCRIPTION:CCAP town hall on the City’s Community Economic Development Plan \nWHEN: 1-3pm\, Saturday\, October 1st 2016\nWHERE: Carnegie Theatre\, Unceded Coast Salish Territories \nThe City is pushing through a new Community Economic Development Strategy for the Downtown Eastside this fall. The strategy touches on everything from street vending\, community benefit agreements\, employment and volunteering opportunities\, retail tax exemptions\, loss of affordable retail to social enterprises. \nTaken together\, the strategy will have a significant impact on low-income people in the Downtown Eastside. On Saturday\, October 1st\, we are holding a town hall at the Carnegie in order to inform Downtown Eastside residents and community groups about some of the measures the strategy proposes. We will also present our retail and zones of exclusion research at the town hall\, our concerns about the strategy\, and we want your feedback! \nWhile the strategy mentions the need to increase welfare rates\, it is predominantly in favour of market solutions to poverty in the Downtown Eastside. As such\, we are concerned that the strategy fails to address the root causes of poverty in the neighbourhood\, and some of the measures supported by the plan will actually facilitate gentrification and the loss of low-income housing. \nCome to the town hall and learn how the economic development strategy will impact low-income residents. We will discuss the strategy\, why market approaches to poverty doesn’t work and real measures to address poverty in the neighbourhood. \nCoffee and snacks will be provided! \nThe town hall is taking place on the unceded coast salish territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Wauthuth) and Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) peoples.

Estos Trovadores poseen y practican la tradición musical heredada de los pioneros del canto vernáculo. La Trova Nuestra incorpora esta tradición en el encuentro de la música y la poesía. These Troubadours are the keepers of a musical tradition which began with pioneers of the vernacular song. La Trova Nuestra incorporates this tradition interplaying music and poetry. At its foundation is the essence of a popular culture interpreting daily expression… an expression with origins deep within La Raza Mestiza (mixed roots) of Latin America — an expression of the explosive changes within the continent of Latin America today. La Trova Nuestra could be defined as “The encounter between a person\, a guitar and their poetry — Voices pledging for a better world”. \nArt by Jose Montilla*

SUMMARY:Orange Shirt Day Celebration with IRSSS
DESCRIPTION:COME WALK WITH US IN VANCOUVER! \nWe are gathering at the Lu’ma Native Housing Society office (2960 Nanaimo Street) and then at 10:00AM we are walking to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society office (2406 Nanaimo Street) to honour IRS survivors and the students who did not return home. A celebration will commence there afterwards including drumming and refreshments. \n—–\nContact IRSSS for details on the event on September 30th or information about our orange t-shirts: 1-800-721-0066\n—– \n“Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake\, BC\, Canada\, in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis’ story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission\, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. \nThe date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools\, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children\, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations. \nOrange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations\, local governments\, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.” \nMore info about Orange Shirt Day at: http://www.orangeshirtday.org/ \nPhyllis (Jack) Webstad’s Story: http://www.orangeshirtday.org/phyllis-story.html

The Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) is a 1\,168-mile long crude oil pipeline that will transport nearly 570\,000 barrels of oil each day from North Dakota to Illinois. The Army Corps of Engineers green-lighted several sections of the process without fully satisfying the National Historic Preservation Act\, various environmental statutes\, and its trust responsibility to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. \nThis is another chapter in the long history of the federal government granting the construction of potentially hazardous projects near or through tribal lands\, waters\, and cultural places without including the tribe. The current proposed pipeline route crosses under Lake Oahe\, just a half mile up from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. \nWhile the Tribe is waiting for a federal court decision on a preliminary injunction to stop the pipeline construction\, the pipeline company is waiting for the Army Corps of Engineers to grant an easement to drill under Lake Oahe. The Army Corps of Engineers\, the White House\, and Congress must halt the easement because the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s waters and sacred places must be protected. \n#waterislife\, #NoDakotaAccess #nodapl \n*Thanks to Sarah Scanlon for this background info

SUMMARY:Spark: A Fireside Artist Talk feat. Bracken Hanuse Corlett
DESCRIPTION:grunt gallery presents Spark: Fireside Artist Talks in the Longhouse at the Native Education College held on (approximately) the 3rd Thursday of every month from 12:15 pm – 1:00 pm. \nThis informal lunch-hour talk is hosted by a series of artists who push at the boundaries of the traditional and the contemporary. How do their creations offer insight into broader issues that Indigenous people are faced with in the world today? What sorts of barriers or challenges exist for these artists? What strategies do they use to overcome these challenges? \nTHURSDAY\, SEPTEMBER 29 \nBracken Hanuse Corlett is an interdisciplinary artist hailing from the Wuikinuxv and Klahoose Nations. He began working in theatre and performance 16 years ago\, before transitioning to a practice that fuses digital-media\, audio-visual performance\, writing\, painting\, sculpture and drawing. His work combines traditional Indigenous iconography and history with new media and concepts that exist within cyclical space. He is the co-founder of the Vancouver Indigenous Media Arts Festival. Over the last five years he has performed across the country as a member of the audio-visual collective Skookum Sound System and currently in the DJ/VJ duo See Monsters. He is a graduate of the En’owkin Centre of Indigenous Art and went to Emily Carr University of Art and Design for a B.F.A. in Visual Arts. He has also studied Northwest Coast art\, carving and design from acclaimed Heiltsuk artists Bradley Hunt and his sons Shawn Hunt and Dean Hunt. \nSome of his notable exhibitions\, performances and screenings have been at grunt gallery\, the Museum of Anthropology\, Unit PITT Projects\, Vancouver International Film Festival (Vancouver)\, Three Walls Gallery (Chicago)\, Ottawa International Animation Festival\, SAW Gallery (Ottawa)\, Royal BC Museum\, Open Space (Victoria)\, Winnipeg Art Gallery\, Urban Shaman (Winnipeg)\, Sâkêwêwak Artists’ Collective\, Mackenzie Art Gallery (Regina)\, Atlantic Film Festival\, Tidal Force – Independent Media Arts Alliance (Halifax)\, Art Mur\, Sommets du Cinéma D’animation (Montreal)\, ImagineNative\, Toronto International Film Festival\, Music Gallery (Toronto). \nOPEN TO THE PUBLIC \nThis recurring event is always FREE\, and all are welcome to attend. SUMMARY:Make Affordable Housing A Priority!
DESCRIPTION:Make affordable housing a priority\, rather than a mere election item! \nJoin us in a rallying to demand the City of Vancouver take immediate steps to regulate the housing market. \nWe have an affordable housing crisis precipitated by an artificially-inflated real estate market: while 50% of us rent\, only about 3% of our housing is designated ‘social’. Other cities in the world such as Stockholm or Vienna\, have anywhere from 30-80% social housing\, owned and maintained by the municipality. \nWe are calling for: \n– Investment in civic owned co-ops and social housing projects to provide affordable housing in Vancouver. \n– Implementation of zoning for rent-controls and a vacant property tax. \n– That the City crackdown and enforce the laws and by-laws already in place since 1956 to force landlords and slumlord owners of rental properties and SROs to adhere to the minimum health standards that are currently law. \nWe ask that the City take immediate action to meaningfully engage with neighbourhoods and communities to help find solutions\, this is only useful if the city actually listens to and seeks community–based solutions\, otherwise such inclusion is nothing more than a facade. \nSpeakers TBA

SUMMARY:March Against Poverty Rates
DESCRIPTION:BC ACORN members are tired of having the BC Liberals ignore the issues! They think they can get away with the unjust clawback of the bus pass\, and buy our silence with a measly $77 raise. Enough is enough! \nACORN members are calling for a reinstatement of the annual buss pass for PWD recipients\, as well as a meaningful increase to social assistance rates! BC is one of the wealthiest provinces in Canada. There is no excuse for the government’s greed! The politicians give themselves a raise\, and leave real people to line up outside of the foodbank! \nJoin ACORN members for a march to demand justice for disabled British Columbians!
