SUMMARY:Sisters In Spirit: Candlelight Vigil & Performance
DESCRIPTION:This event will start 630pm \nCoast Salish opening\nSpeakers TBA\nPerformance by: Butterflies in Spirit\nKathara Filipino cultural group\nEntertribal (hiphop duo)\nMore performance TBA\nCandlelight/moment of silence vigil \nNative Womens Association of Canada website info: \nOctober 4th is a day where we honour the lives of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls. The violence experienced by Aboriginal women and girls in Canada is a national tragedy. We must take the time to give thanks to the families who are our reason we all continue to demand action. \nA vigil can take many forms\, from a moment of silence to a rally to a community feast. All that is important is that you take some time on or around October 4th to mark the day. \nWe firmly believe that the October 4th Sisters In Spirit Vigils are a movement for social change. The number of SIS Vigils has grown from 11 in 2006 to an impressive 216 vigils in 2014. \nEach year\, family members\, Aboriginal community members\, and concerned citizens gather for a vigil on October 4th to honour the memory of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls. Vigils take place in many communities across Canada as well as internationally. These gatherings serve to raise awareness and to provide support to families who have lost a loved one.

DESCRIPTION:RALLY AND MARCH \nWhen: 3:00 pm\, Monday Oct 3\nWhere: 135A Street (near 106th Ave)\, Surrey \nEvery day the RCMP\, Surrey bylaw officers and city workers come to “The Strip” (135A Street) in order to force homeless residents to take down their tents\, pack up their belongings and make everything moveable. And every day they confiscate somebody’s possessions because they consider them unattended or just garbage. \nBut homeless residents of “The Strip” are fighting back. We demand that the City of Surrey stop stealing our stuff. \nFOOD\nFood will be provided at the end of the event\, around 5pm on the 135A strip \nTRANSPORTATION\nWe will be organizing transportation to this march so other displaced and evicted communities can support the Surrey homeless in their struggle. SUMMARY:Social Justice not Social Entrepreneurs!
DESCRIPTION:CCAP town hall on the City’s Community Economic Development Plan \nWHEN: 1-3pm\, Saturday\, October 1st 2016\nWHERE: Carnegie Theatre\, Unceded Coast Salish Territories \nThe City is pushing through a new Community Economic Development Strategy for the Downtown Eastside this fall. The strategy touches on everything from street vending\, community benefit agreements\, employment and volunteering opportunities\, retail tax exemptions\, loss of affordable retail to social enterprises. \nTaken together\, the strategy will have a significant impact on low-income people in the Downtown Eastside. On Saturday\, October 1st\, we are holding a town hall at the Carnegie in order to inform Downtown Eastside residents and community groups about some of the measures the strategy proposes. We will also present our retail and zones of exclusion research at the town hall\, our concerns about the strategy\, and we want your feedback! \nWhile the strategy mentions the need to increase welfare rates\, it is predominantly in favour of market solutions to poverty in the Downtown Eastside. As such\, we are concerned that the strategy fails to address the root causes of poverty in the neighbourhood\, and some of the measures supported by the plan will actually facilitate gentrification and the loss of low-income housing. \nCome to the town hall and learn how the economic development strategy will impact low-income residents. We will discuss the strategy\, why market approaches to poverty doesn’t work and real measures to address poverty in the neighbourhood. \nCoffee and snacks will be provided! \nThe town hall is taking place on the unceded coast salish territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Wauthuth) and Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) peoples.

These Troubadours are the keepers of a musical tradition which began with pioneers of the vernacular song. La Trova Nuestra incorporates this tradition interplaying music and poetry. At its foundation is the essence of a popular culture interpreting daily expression… an expression with origins deep within La Raza Mestiza (mixed roots) of Latin America — an expression of the explosive changes within the continent of Latin America today. La Trova Nuestra could be defined as “The encounter between a person\, a guitar and their poetry — Voices pledging for a better world”. \nArt by Jose Montilla*

SUMMARY:Orange Shirt Day Celebration with IRSSS
DESCRIPTION:COME WALK WITH US IN VANCOUVER! \nWe are gathering at the Lu’ma Native Housing Society office (2960 Nanaimo Street) and then at 10:00AM we are walking to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society office (2406 Nanaimo Street) to honour IRS survivors and the students who did not return home. A celebration will commence there afterwards including drumming and refreshments. \n—–\nContact IRSSS for details on the event on September 30th or information about our orange t-shirts: 1-800-721-0066\n—– \n“Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake\, BC\, Canada\, in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis’ story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission\, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. \nThe date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools\, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children\, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations. \nOrange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations\, local governments\, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.” \nMore info about Orange Shirt Day at: http://www.orangeshirtday.org/ \nPhyllis (Jack) Webstad’s Story: http://www.orangeshirtday.org/phyllis-story.html

The Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) is a 1\,168-mile long crude oil pipeline that will transport nearly 570\,000 barrels of oil each day from North Dakota to Illinois. The Army Corps of Engineers green-lighted several sections of the process without fully satisfying the National Historic Preservation Act\, various environmental statutes\, and its trust responsibility to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. \nThis is another chapter in the long history of the federal government granting the construction of potentially hazardous projects near or through tribal lands\, waters\, and cultural places without including the tribe. The current proposed pipeline route crosses under Lake Oahe\, just a half mile up from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. \nWhile the Tribe is waiting for a federal court decision on a preliminary injunction to stop the pipeline construction\, the pipeline company is waiting for the Army Corps of Engineers to grant an easement to drill under Lake Oahe. The Army Corps of Engineers\, the White House\, and Congress must halt the easement because the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s waters and sacred places must be protected. \n#waterislife\, #NoDakotaAccess #nodapl \n*Thanks to Sarah Scanlon for this background info

SUMMARY:Spark: A Fireside Artist Talk feat. Bracken Hanuse Corlett
DESCRIPTION:grunt gallery presents Spark: Fireside Artist Talks in the Longhouse at the Native Education College held on (approximately) the 3rd Thursday of every month from 12:15 pm – 1:00 pm. \nThis informal lunch-hour talk is hosted by a series of artists who push at the boundaries of the traditional and the contemporary. How do their creations offer insight into broader issues that Indigenous people are faced with in the world today? What sorts of barriers or challenges exist for these artists? What strategies do they use to overcome these challenges? \nTHURSDAY\, SEPTEMBER 29 \nBracken Hanuse Corlett is an interdisciplinary artist hailing from the Wuikinuxv and Klahoose Nations. He began working in theatre and performance 16 years ago\, before transitioning to a practice that fuses digital-media\, audio-visual performance\, writing\, painting\, sculpture and drawing. His work combines traditional Indigenous iconography and history with new media and concepts that exist within cyclical space. He is the co-founder of the Vancouver Indigenous Media Arts Festival. SUMMARY:Make Affordable Housing A Priority!
DESCRIPTION:Make affordable housing a priority\, rather than a mere election item! \nJoin us in a rallying to demand the City of Vancouver take immediate steps to regulate the housing market. \nWe have an affordable housing crisis precipitated by an artificially-inflated real estate market: while 50% of us rent\, only about 3% of our housing is designated ‘social’. Other cities in the world such as Stockholm or Vienna\, have anywhere from 30-80% social housing\, owned and maintained by the municipality. \nWe are calling for: \n– Investment in civic owned co-ops and social housing projects to provide affordable housing in Vancouver. \n– Implementation of zoning for rent-controls and a vacant property tax. \n– That the City crackdown and enforce the laws and by-laws already in place since 1956 to force landlords and slumlord owners of rental properties and SROs to adhere to the minimum health standards that are currently law. \nWe ask that the City take immediate action to meaningfully engage with neighbourhoods and communities to help find solutions\, this is only useful if the city actually listens to and seeks community–based solutions\, otherwise such inclusion is nothing more than a facade. \nSpeakers TBA

SUMMARY:March Against Poverty Rates
DESCRIPTION:BC ACORN members are tired of having the BC Liberals ignore the issues! They think they can get away with the unjust clawback of the bus pass\, and buy our silence with a measly $77 raise. Enough is enough! \nACORN members are calling for a reinstatement of the annual buss pass for PWD recipients\, as well as a meaningful increase to social assistance rates! BC is one of the wealthiest provinces in Canada. There is no excuse for the government’s greed! The politicians give themselves a raise\, and leave real people to line up outside of the foodbank! \nJoin ACORN members for a march to demand justice for disabled British Columbians!

SUMMARY:Rally for Justice in Education
DESCRIPTION:Saturday at 1:00PM on August 27th\, at the Vancouver Art Gallery\, the BC Student Alliance is hosting a rally of high school students who feel marginalized by British Columbia’s education system. As of right now our education system is not listening to the voices of its constituents. Our curriculum has been designed without community consent\, very few districts in BC have a student trustee\, and teachers/parents have been given a lop-sided amount of influence in making decisions that affect students. \nThe byproduct of this is an apathetic population of young people that do not have adequate means of self-expression. In our current culture\, people are taught that to be young is to be naïve and therefore only adults should speak out on important topics. Because of this\, social justice movements have been lacking in solidarity from youth when the people who are hurt the most by issues of class\, race\, gender and sexual orientation are often times children. \nThis rally for justice will be an opportunity for young people to speak out on topics that will affect our future like the environment\, upcoming elections\, or activism in general\, and to call out our education system for failing to support its students in finding their voice. Right now\, children are sent off to school like it’s a chore\, where they are regularly told lies that perpetuate colonialism\, and put into an environment that does not support\, but oftentimes provokes mental illness/stress/anxiety. The result of this system going unquestioned is a population of people that are too conditioned to stand up for themselves. The BC Student Alliance is drawing the line in the sand here by stating that our generation is not going to fall prey to fear\, and we are going to speak out on the problems that face us in the 21st century. \nOur speakers will cover topics like the need for more student representation on the school board\, the need for social justice within schools\, education as something that is not limited to the classroom\, and how we will grow our student movement. \nAlthough this event is organized by the BCSA\, we welcome all community members to show up and stand in solidarity with us. We want teachers\, parents\, families\, and everyone in the BC activist community to come and hear our voices. \n*We will be set up on the South Side of the Vancouver Art Gallery (the side close to the entrance) on Robson Street. This event is taking place on the traditional\, ancestral and unceded territory and homelands of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. \nA schedule will be posted in the event discussion.

SUMMARY:Protest over war vehicles sales in Africa
DESCRIPTION:We are organizing a protest on the government of Canada demanding\, the stop of war vehicles sells and or any destructive equipment in Africa by any Canadian company. Canada fuels different wars in Africa\, making profit on the sales of war equipment/Mining etc\, this should be stopped. \nCanadian company’s sale of armoured vehicles contributed to the war in South Sudan and The Current Situation in Libya\nA USIP Fact Sheet Published: May 16\, 2016. http://www.usip.org/publications/the-current-situation-in-libya \nFive years after Libya’s dictator Moammar Gadhafi was deposed in a popular revolution\, the country remains trapped in a spiral of deteriorating security\, economic crisis\, and political deadlock. Trust in the nation’s weak government institutions has fallen to an all-time low as political elites\, unable to agree on even a governmental structure\, deploy armed militias to control territory and economic assets. An additional challenge comes from ISIS and other violent extremists exploiting the situation to expand operations in Libya. Still\, civil society organizations remain active and committed to laying the foundation for a unity government capable of rebuilding the state. \nABOUT Streit is owned by Guerman Goutorov\, a Canadian citizen who lives in the United Arab Emirates. His Canadian-based company is Streit Manufacturing in Innisfil\, Ont. In 2012\, when this Streit shipment took place\, transfers of armoured personnel carriers to Libya required advance approval from the UN sanctions committee overseeing the embargo. But\, the UN report says\, the United Nations wasn’t notified about this 2012 delivery before it occurred – meaning “the transfer occurred in violation of the arms embargo.”

SUMMARY:Victoria: Speak Up About Kinder Morgan's Pipeline & Tanker Plan
DESCRIPTION:For six long years you’ve been waiting to have your say on the Kinder Morgan pipeline – and now is your chance! A federal panel is meeting with communities along the pipeline and tanker route to gauge public opposition to the project. \nIt’s time to speak up for the coast\, for the climate and for Indigenous rights! Will you join us to tell this panel to put this pipeline to bed? \nDetails are sparse but sign up to speak and we’ll keep you updated on how and when to make your voice count in person.\nYou can sign up here:\nhttp://sierraclub.bc.ca/take-action-centre/pack-halls-speak-kinder-morgan/ \nVictoria schedule so far: \nAugust 22: Victoria BC\, times and location TBD\n-invitational roundtable (local government) with public participation\n-First Nations roundtable \nAugust 23: Victoria BC\, times and location TBD\n-invitational roundtable (NGOs) with public participation\npublic town hall with open participation \n**Sierra Club BC and Wilderness Committee will be organizing an event outside the public town hall. If you’d like to get involved\, contact Galen Armstrong at galen@sierraclub.bc.ca or Emily Hoffpauir at emily@wildernesscommittee.org \nSee complete listings at www.forthecoast.ca/public-meetings \nBackground info \nTo recap\, a Texas pipeline company wants to ship Alberta bitumen to refineries in China using Burrard Inlet to load more than 400 oil tankers a year. This proposal is nearly double the size of Enbridge’s recently rejected Northern Gateway. \nCommunities along the pipeline route would be subject to increased vulnerabilty to more spills. The entire Lower Mainland and South Island would be affected by an oil tanker spill\, plus everyone who relies on salmon from the Fraser watershed — or the multi-billion dollar tourism industry on the south coast. And that’s before counting the climate impacts. \n100% of Lower Mainland coastal nations oppose this pipeline and tanker project. 16 First Nations in BC are firmly opposed. Reconciliation and sovereignty mean listening to First Nations when they say no. \nA new federal panel has been appointed to hear from the public along the pipeline route. This process is separate from the National Energy Board\, which already recommended approval of the project. The Trudeau government will weigh both reports before delivering a final decision in December. \nHere are the meeting dates: \nAugust 9\, 10\, 11: Burnaby BC\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/271163149913783/ \nAugust 16\, 17\, 18: Vancouver BC\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1735292126759599/ \nAugust 19: North Vancouver BC\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1362370810442976/ \nAugust 23\, 24: Victoria BC\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1068090206605321/ \nThe timing sucks with lots of people away for summer holidays\, but this is your last opportunity to speak publicly about the project. If you can make it to one of these dates (whether as a speaker or just to support your neighbours)\, please sign up here. \nIf you can’t make it to the meetings\, you can send a letter to the panel here:\nhttp://sierraclub.bc.ca/take-action-centre/write-letter-trans-mountain-ministerial-panel/

SUMMARY:North Vancouver - Speak Up About Kinder Morgan!
DESCRIPTION:For six long years you’ve been waiting to have your say on the Kinder Morgan pipeline – and now is your chance! A federal panel is meeting with communities along the pipeline and tanker route to gauge public opposition to the project. \nWe need you to come speak up for the coast\, for the climate and for Indigenous rights! Will you join us to tell this panel to put this pipeline to bed? \nWhat: Public town hall\nDate: August 19\, 2016\nTime: 2:30-7:00pm\nWhere: North Vancouver District Hall\nAddress: 355 West Queens Road North Vancouver\, BC \nSee complete listings at www.forthecoast.ca/public-meetings\n\nBackground \nTo recap\, a Texas pipeline company wants to ship Alberta bitumen to refineries in China using Burrard Inlet to load more than 400 oil tankers a year. This proposal is nearly double the size of Enbridge’s recently rejected Northern Gateway. \nCommunities along the pipeline would be at dramatically elevated risks of spills.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of FIRE SONG\, in which a young Anishinaabe man must choose between staying in his community or exploring the world beyond. \nWatch the Fire Song trailer:\nhttps://youtu.be/UHqZU4dx6j0 \nTickets: http://queerfilmfestival.ca/films/fire-song/ \nVancouver Queer Film Festival\, along with guest curator Harlan Pruden ofTwo Spirit Journal\, present Two‐Spirit REELness – a three‐film spotlight and workshop on Indigenous stories\, sponsored by Vancity. Details about the spotlight: http://queerfilmfestival.ca/blog/first-spotlights-of-2016-announced/ \nFire Song\, the first feature from writer/director Adam Garnet Jones\, debuted at TIFF to rave reviews last year and won two different audience awards while making its way around the festival circuit. We’re bringing it back to Vancouver by popular demand. \nOn a northern Ontario Anishinaabe reserve plagued by a high suicide rate\, Shane (Andrew Martin)\, a closeted high school senior\, dreams of leaving for university in Toronto\, but money is tight. As Shane tries to deal with the loss of his sister\, he is faced with the choice between his family and his future\, while also trying to be true to himself. Martin\, a young Mohawk actor from Six Nations in Ontario\, the largest First Nations reserve in Canada\, shines in his debut performance. So does Mary Galloway as his girlfriend Tara\, a role that garnered her a Leo nomination. \nA filmmaker of both Cree and Métis heritage\, Jones is based in Toronto but is no stranger to Vancouver or the VQFF. Over the last 10 years\, he has injected his films with outstanding craftsmanship and dedication to Two-Spirit themes. \nFire Song | Adam Garnet Jones | Canada | 2015 | 85 min

SUMMARY:This park of great care - thirstDays No.07
DESCRIPTION:**thirstDays: love\, intimacy and (com)passion\, in a geopolitical context**\nA monthly series of video\, film\, performance and ceremony events\nProject curator/artist-in-residence Jayce Salloum \nNo. 07\n“this park of great care” \n***At Oppenheimer Park*** \nCurated by Ali Lohan + Cecily Nicholson\nFeaturing/works by\nAlfie Harry\, Audrey Siegl\, Ayumi Goto\, Bud Osborn\, Juan Manuel Sepulveda + film participants\, Natalie Knight\, The Oppenheimer Park Ladies’ Tea Party with Eunice Macmillan + Cassandra Eastman\, Sarah Godoy-White \nOur poetic love of the city links us necessarily to Oppenheimer Park. In “this park of great care” (1) we consider spatial scales for struggle of a neighbourhood through to and beyond the nation state. Dispossession\, mass assembly\, internment\, harm reduction\, institutionalization\, displacement\, sovereign presence are present threads in the Downtown Eastside Oppenheimer District. Heart of the low-income community for a reason\, it is the only neighbourhood in Vancouver ostensibly protected against real estate development by city policy. This program reveals longstanding relationships of care and honours the many\, women especially\, who have entwined arts and social organizing at the park. \n~ Ali Lohan and Cecily Nicholson \n(1) a thousand crosses in oppenheimer park\, Bud Osborn\, 1997 \n— \nALI LOHAN has been involved in the production of community engaged art and cultural initiatives\, including art forums\, workshops\, curatorial projects and exhibitions in the neighbourhood where she lives\, the Downtown Eastside\, since 2001. Ali’s practice celebrates resilience. It is involved in and informed by narratives of historically displaced communities. \nCECILY NICHOLSON lives New Westminster\, she is the administrator of the artist-run centre Gallery Gachet and has worked since 2000 in the downtown eastside neighbourhood of Vancouver. She collaborates with the Joint Effort prison abolitionist group and is the author of Triage and From the Poplars\, winner of the 2015 Dorothy Livesay prize for poetry. \n#thirstDaysVIVO\n#VIVOMediaArts \nAt: Oppenheimer Park\n488 Powell St\, Downtown Eastside\nVancouver\, BC \nFree admission or stream it live\nat thirstDays.vivomediaarts.com \nUpcoming programs curated by Ali Lohan + Cecily Nicholson\, Raymond Boisjoly + Jordan Wilson\, Ayumi Goto + Tannis Monkman Nielsen\, Dima Alansari + Cathy Busby\, Henry Tsang + Diyan Achjadi\, Elisa Ferrari + Stacey Ho. Past programs curated by David Khang + Phanuel Antwi\, Irwin Oostindie + Ronnie Dean Harris\, Denise Ryner + Tonel\, Ashok Mathur + Jeneen Frei Njootli\, T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss + Aaron Rice. Writer in residence: Tarah Hogue. \n– –\nthirstDays is a project conceived as the rain falls and covers us in a slick substance transduced from the skies\, moist. How can this\, how can we\, contribute to the establishing of a momentum that may have once been here in waves or pieces but over time was squandered\, and defeated\, with the imposition of capital triumphantly declaring its colonial (un)consciousness in our enclave by the water. Surrounded by a possible serene beauty\, grief and sadness\, love and hate\, what encounters do we inscribe into our psyches and into our beings\, what can art do to fulfil a mandate of hope and agency. What can we contribute. \nThe project takes inspiration from the patterns of existence to look at the mechanisms which we are part of\, and relate them to all we end up being\, sharing\, denying\, repressing and preserving. We seek that which compels us: love\, intimacy and (com)passion\, explorations of the commons/(un)commons; empathy and subjectivities; nourishing sites and situations; modes of agency; and subjectivities of place.\nWe insist on diversity and threads of collaboration\, strands of ‘collectivity’/affinity\, emphasizing works that have a specificity of location with resonances/meanings for others within reach and beyond. There is a socio-psycho imperative here at this site – Vancouver – grounded in what is missing and manoeuvering the gaps while referencing the historic in the present(ness) – and of the moment – with the critical reimagining of the repressed and the projection of empathy and action. – Jayce Salloum \nJAYCE SALLOUM\, a grandson of Syrian immigrants from the Bekaa Valley (Lebanon) was born and raised on Sylix (Okanagan) territory in Kelowna\, BC. His work has been exhibited in a wide array of venues\, from the smallest unnamed storefronts in his dtes (downtown eastside) Vancouver neighbourhood to institutions such as the Musée du Louvre\, Museum of Modern Art\, Centre Georges Pompidou\, National Gallery of Canada\, Bienal De La Havana\, Sharjah Biennial\, Biennale of Sydney and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. Salloum is a recipient of the 2014 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/thirstDaysVIVO
