SUMMARY:Rally for Justice in Education
DESCRIPTION:Saturday at 1:00PM on August 27th\, at the Vancouver Art Gallery\, the BC Student Alliance is hosting a rally of high school students who feel marginalized by British Columbia’s education system. As of right now our education system is not listening to the voices of its constituents. Our curriculum has been designed without community consent\, very few districts in BC have a student trustee\, and teachers/parents have been given a lop-sided amount of influence in making decisions that affect students. \nThe byproduct of this is an apathetic population of young people that do not have adequate means of self-expression. In our current culture\, people are taught that to be young is to be naïve and therefore only adults should speak out on important topics. Because of this\, social justice movements have been lacking in solidarity from youth when the people who are hurt the most by issues of class\, race\, gender and sexual orientation are often times children. \nThis rally for justice will be an opportunity for young people to speak out on topics that will affect our future like the environment\, upcoming elections\, or activism in general\, and to call out our education system for failing to support its students in finding their voice. Right now\, children are sent off to school like it’s a chore\, where they are regularly told lies that perpetuate colonialism\, and put into an environment that does not support\, but oftentimes provokes mental illness/stress/anxiety. The result of this system going unquestioned is a population of people that are too conditioned to stand up for themselves. The BC Student Alliance is drawing the line in the sand here by stating that our generation is not going to fall prey to fear\, and we are going to speak out on the problems that face us in the 21st century. \nOur speakers will cover topics like the need for more student representation on the school board\, the need for social justice within schools\, education as something that is not limited to the classroom\, and how we will grow our student movement. \nAlthough this event is organized by the BCSA\, we welcome all community members to show up and stand in solidarity with us. We want teachers\, parents\, families\, and everyone in the BC activist community to come and hear our voices. \n*We will be set up on the South Side of the Vancouver Art Gallery (the side close to the entrance) on Robson Street. This event is taking place on the traditional\, ancestral and unceded territory and homelands of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. \nA schedule will be posted in the event discussion.

SUMMARY:Protest over war vehicles sales in Africa
DESCRIPTION:We are organizing a protest on the government of Canada demanding\, the stop of war vehicles sells and or any destructive equipment in Africa by any Canadian company. Canada fuels different wars in Africa\, making profit on the sales of war equipment/Mining etc\, this should be stopped. \nCanadian company’s sale of armoured vehicles contributed to the war in South Sudan and The Current Situation in Libya\nA USIP Fact Sheet Published: May 16\, 2016. http://www.usip.org/publications/the-current-situation-in-libya \nFive years after Libya’s dictator Moammar Gadhafi was deposed in a popular revolution\, the country remains trapped in a spiral of deteriorating security\, economic crisis\, and political deadlock. Trust in the nation’s weak government institutions has fallen to an all-time low as political elites\, unable to agree on even a governmental structure\, deploy armed militias to control territory and economic assets. An additional challenge comes from ISIS and other violent extremists exploiting the situation to expand operations in Libya. Still\, civil society organizations remain active and committed to laying the foundation for a unity government capable of rebuilding the state. \nABOUT Streit is owned by Guerman Goutorov\, a Canadian citizen who lives in the United Arab Emirates. His Canadian-based company is Streit Manufacturing in Innisfil\, Ont. In 2012\, when this Streit shipment took place\, transfers of armoured personnel carriers to Libya required advance approval from the UN sanctions committee overseeing the embargo. But\, the UN report says\, the United Nations wasn’t notified about this 2012 delivery before it occurred – meaning “the transfer occurred in violation of the arms embargo.”

SUMMARY:Climate Convergence Meeting - Site C approval\, what's next for Climate Convergence?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the August meeting of People’s Climate Convergence\, where the diverse strands of the climate justice movement come together every month to strategize\, organize and build grassroots mobilization. \nThis month we’re featuring speakers from the Fight C campaign and discussing what Trudeau’s approval of Site C means for the Climate Justice Movement and the struggle for First Nations’ rights. We’ll also discuss what we can do to support FIght C’s next major action in September. \nWe’ll also begin organizing for a National Mobilization being called by350.org and Lead Now for late October to demand real climate action in the National Climate Plan. \nThe Delivering Community Power Campaign through People For Posties-Vancouver will be updating us on the upcoming Pan-Canadian day of action on September 17th in solidarity with Postal Workers and what we can do to support it. \nAs always there will be key updates\, reports and announcements from a wide range of climate action groups. In particular this month we’ll have a report back from the Unist’ot’en Action Camp\, and we’re inviting activists from the Imperial Metals Blockade to give an update on their struggle. \nLook forward to seeing you there.

SUMMARY:Victoria: Speak Up About Kinder Morgan's Pipeline & Tanker Plan
DESCRIPTION:For six long years you’ve been waiting to have your say on the Kinder Morgan pipeline – and now is your chance! A federal panel is meeting with communities along the pipeline and tanker route to gauge public opposition to the project. \nIt’s time to speak up for the coast\, for the climate and for Indigenous rights! Will you join us to tell this panel to put this pipeline to bed? \nDetails are sparse but sign up to speak and we’ll keep you updated on how and when to make your voice count in person.\nYou can sign up here:\nhttp://sierraclub.bc.ca/take-action-centre/pack-halls-speak-kinder-morgan/ \nVictoria schedule so far: \nAugust 22: Victoria BC\, times and location TBD\n-invitational roundtable (local government) with public participation\n-First Nations roundtable \nAugust 23: Victoria BC\, times and location TBD\n-invitational roundtable (NGOs) with public participation\npublic town hall with open participation \n**Sierra Club BC and Wilderness Committee will be organizing an event outside the public town hall. If you’d like to get involved\, contact Galen Armstrong at galen@sierraclub.bc.ca or Emily Hoffpauir at emily@wildernesscommittee.org \nSee complete listings at www.forthecoast.ca/public-meetings \nBackground info \nTo recap\, a Texas pipeline company wants to ship Alberta bitumen to refineries in China using Burrard Inlet to load more than 400 oil tankers a year. This proposal is nearly double the size of Enbridge’s recently rejected Northern Gateway. \nCommunities along the pipeline route would be subject to increased vulnerabilty to more spills. The entire Lower Mainland and South Island would be affected by an oil tanker spill\, plus everyone who relies on salmon from the Fraser watershed — or the multi-billion dollar tourism industry on the south coast. And that’s before counting the climate impacts. \n100% of Lower Mainland coastal nations oppose this pipeline and tanker project. 16 First Nations in BC are firmly opposed. Reconciliation and sovereignty mean listening to First Nations when they say no. \nA new federal panel has been appointed to hear from the public along the pipeline route. This process is separate from the National Energy Board\, which already recommended approval of the project. The Trudeau government will weigh both reports before delivering a final decision in December. \nHere are the meeting dates: \nAugust 9\, 10\, 11: Burnaby BC\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/271163149913783/ \nAugust 16\, 17\, 18: Vancouver BC\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1735292126759599/ \nAugust 19: North Vancouver BC\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1362370810442976/ \nAugust 23\, 24: Victoria BC\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1068090206605321/ \nThe timing sucks with lots of people away for summer holidays\, but this is your last opportunity to speak publicly about the project. If you can make it to one of these dates (whether as a speaker or just to support your neighbours)\, please sign up here. \nIf you can’t make it to the meetings\, you can send a letter to the panel here:\nhttp://sierraclub.bc.ca/take-action-centre/write-letter-trans-mountain-ministerial-panel/

SUMMARY:This park of great care - thirstDays No.07
DESCRIPTION:**thirstDays: love\, intimacy and (com)passion\, in a geopolitical context**\nA monthly series of video\, film\, performance and ceremony events\nProject curator/artist-in-residence Jayce Salloum \nNo. 07\n“this park of great care” \n***At Oppenheimer Park*** \nCurated by Ali Lohan + Cecily Nicholson\nFeaturing/works by\nAlfie Harry\, Audrey Siegl\, Ayumi Goto\, Bud Osborn\, Juan Manuel Sepulveda + film participants\, Natalie Knight\, The Oppenheimer Park Ladies’ Tea Party with Eunice Macmillan + Cassandra Eastman\, Sarah Godoy-White \nOur poetic love of the city links us necessarily to Oppenheimer Park. In “this park of great care” (1) we consider spatial scales for struggle of a neighbourhood through to and beyond the nation state. Dispossession\, mass assembly\, internment\, harm reduction\, institutionalization\, displacement\, sovereign presence are present threads in the Downtown Eastside Oppenheimer District. Heart of the low-income community for a reason\, it is the only neighbourhood in Vancouver ostensibly protected against real estate development by city policy. This program reveals longstanding relationships of care and honours the many\, women especially\, who have entwined arts and social organizing at the park. \n~ Ali Lohan and Cecily Nicholson \n(1) a thousand crosses in oppenheimer park\, Bud Osborn\, 1997 \n— \nALI LOHAN has been involved in the production of community engaged art and cultural initiatives\, including art forums\, workshops\, curatorial projects and exhibitions in the neighbourhood where she lives\, the Downtown Eastside\, since 2001. Ali’s practice celebrates resilience. It is involved in and informed by narratives of historically displaced communities. \nCECILY NICHOLSON lives New Westminster\, she is the administrator of the artist-run centre Gallery Gachet and has worked since 2000 in the downtown eastside neighbourhood of Vancouver. She collaborates with the Joint Effort prison abolitionist group and is the author of Triage and From the Poplars\, winner of the 2015 Dorothy Livesay prize for poetry. \n#thirstDaysVIVO\n#VIVOMediaArts \nAt: Oppenheimer Park\n488 Powell St\, Downtown Eastside\nVancouver\, BC \nFree admission or stream it live\nat thirstDays.vivomediaarts.com \nUpcoming programs curated by Ali Lohan + Cecily Nicholson\, Raymond Boisjoly + Jordan Wilson\, Ayumi Goto + Tannis Monkman Nielsen\, Dima Alansari + Cathy Busby\, Henry Tsang + Diyan Achjadi\, Elisa Ferrari + Stacey Ho. Past programs curated by David Khang + Phanuel Antwi\, Irwin Oostindie + Ronnie Dean Harris\, Denise Ryner + Tonel\, Ashok Mathur + Jeneen Frei Njootli\, T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss + Aaron Rice. Writer in residence: Tarah Hogue. \n– –\nthirstDays is a project conceived as the rain falls and covers us in a slick substance transduced from the skies\, moist. How can this\, how can we\, contribute to the establishing of a momentum that may have once been here in waves or pieces but over time was squandered\, and defeated\, with the imposition of capital triumphantly declaring its colonial (un)consciousness in our enclave by the water. Surrounded by a possible serene beauty\, grief and sadness\, love and hate\, what encounters do we inscribe into our psyches and into our beings\, what can art do to fulfil a mandate of hope and agency. What can we contribute. \nThe project takes inspiration from the patterns of existence to look at the mechanisms which we are part of\, and relate them to all we end up being\, sharing\, denying\, repressing and preserving. We seek that which compels us: love\, intimacy and (com)passion\, explorations of the commons/(un)commons; empathy and subjectivities; nourishing sites and situations; modes of agency; and subjectivities of place.\nWe insist on diversity and threads of collaboration\, strands of ‘collectivity’/affinity\, emphasizing works that have a specificity of location with resonances/meanings for others within reach and beyond. There is a socio-psycho imperative here at this site – Vancouver – grounded in what is missing and manoeuvering the gaps while referencing the historic in the present(ness) – and of the moment – with the critical reimagining of the repressed and the projection of empathy and action. – Jayce Salloum \nJAYCE SALLOUM\, a grandson of Syrian immigrants from the Bekaa Valley (Lebanon) was born and raised on Sylix (Okanagan) territory in Kelowna\, BC. His work has been exhibited in a wide array of venues\, from the smallest unnamed storefronts in his dtes (downtown eastside) Vancouver neighbourhood to institutions such as the Musée du Louvre\, Museum of Modern Art\, Centre Georges Pompidou\, National Gallery of Canada\, Bienal De La Havana\, Sharjah Biennial\, Biennale of Sydney and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. Salloum is a recipient of the 2014 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/thirstDaysVIVO

SUMMARY:In Love & Liberation: A Community Celebration & Farewell to Heartwood
DESCRIPTION:Heartwood is a space settling on the ancestral\, traditional\, and unceded homelands of the Musqueam\, Skxwú7mesh\, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. As you may have heard\, we will be closing our doors on August 15th. As our final weeks wind down\, we’d like to gather up the stories\, the folks\, the community we’ve built over the last three years for one last celebration at 317 E. Broadway. As a thank you\, Heartwood would like to celebrate YOU – the Heartwood Community for being an integral part of how the space has grown. Over the years we’ve realized over and over again that Heartwood is the stuff community dreams are made of! Come out and be part of Heartwood’s last chapter. \nThe evening will be hosted by our beloved Trivia Master hosts\, Jess and Silas – because we wouldn’t have it any other way! We’ll also have performances from some Heartwood Best Of’s including Purple Hearts Social Club\, Kimmortal\, comedians from BIPOC Comedy Night\, Gavin Kade\, performers from Breaking the Fast\, Jen Sungshine from Grand Mamas and more! \n– – – \nSUPPORTING COMMUNITY SPACES: \nAs one social space closes\, we hope to steer our energy towards supporting other community spaces in this city. This community celebration will also be a fundraiser for Gallery Gachet. Entrance is by donation with no one turned away for lack of funds. \nEvent banner credit: Photos by K.Ho – many thanks to Kay for capturing so many beautiful moments at Heartwood. \n– – – \nACCESSIBILITY INFO: \nHeartwood’s washrooms are currently not wheelchair or scooter accessible. SUMMARY:The Color of Pomegranates (Armenia\, 1969)
DESCRIPTION:Armenian-Georgian director Sergei Parajanov directed this visually striking\, non-narrative biography of Sayat Nova\, the 18th-century Armenian romantic poet known as the “King of Songs”. Rather than simply recount the details of the poet’s life\, Parajanov attempts to distil Sayat Nova to his poetic essence through a series of surrealist montages bearing emotional truths steeped in the culture and iconography of the Armenian people within which Sayat Nova flourished.

SUMMARY:Black Lives Matter Spotlight at Vancouver Queer Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:VQFF is proud to partner with Black Lives Matter – Vancouver\, BC to present a Black Lives Matter spotlight at #VQFF2016. \nBlack Lives Matter is a chapter-based organization working for the validity of Black life. We are working to (re)build the Black liberation movement. #BlackLivesMatter was created in 2012 after Trayvon Martin’s murderer\, George Zimmerman\, was acquitted for his crime. #BlackLivesMatter is working for a world where Black lives are no longer systematically and intentionally targeted for demise. The Black Lives Matter Vancouver Chapter was started in 2016 with the aim of standing in solidarity mainly with our friends and family doing great work in Toronto but also all the other BLM chapters across North America. Our goals are to re-visibilize the Black community in Vancouver and BC after histories of erasure that have occurred here\, support the unique struggles of Black folks here such as immigration\, housing and cultural connection and continue to celebrate blackness. \nBLACK LIVES MATTER SPOTLIGHT at VQFF: \nMAJOR! | Thurs Aug 18 | 6:30pm | SFU Woodward’s\nMeet Miss Major Griffin-Gracy\, a 73-year-old Black transgender woman who has been fighting for the rights of trans* women of colour for over 40 years. SUMMARY:Burnaby: Speak Up About Kinder Morgan's Pipeline & Tanker Plan
DESCRIPTION:For six long years you’ve been waiting to have your say on the Kinder Morgan pipeline – and now is your chance! A federal panel is meeting with communities along the pipeline and tanker route to gauge public opposition to the project. \nIt’s time to come speak up for the coast\, for the climate and for Indigenous rights! Will you join us to tell this panel to put this pipeline to bed? \nAugust 11: Burnaby BC\nPublic Town Hall 4:30pm-8:00pm\nHilton Vancouver Metrotown\, Crystal Ballroom\n6083 McKay Avenue\, Burnaby\, BC\nRSVP: http://we.leadnow.ca/forthecoast_burnaby/ \nBurnaby schedule:\n\nAugust 9: Burnaby BC\, Hilton Vancouver Metrotown\, Crystal Ballroom\n1000-1200: Environmental NGO roundtable\n1300-1430: Local government roundtable #1\n1500-1630: Local government roundtable #2 \nAugust 10: Burnaby BC\, Hilton Vancouver Metrotown\, Crystal Ballroom\n0930-1030: Education roundtable\n1100-1200: NGO roundtable\n1330-1700: Public town hall \nAugust 11: Burnaby BC\, Hilton Vancouver Metrotown\, Crystal Ballroom\n1330-1500: Economic round-table\n1630-2000: Public town hall \nSee complete listings at www.forthecoast.ca/public-meetings \nBackground: \nTo recap\, a Texas pipeline company wants to ship Alberta bitumen to refineries in China using Burrard Inlet to load more than 400 oil tankers a year. This proposal is nearly double the size of Enbridge’s recently rejected Northern Gateway. \nThe entire Lower Mainland and South Island would be affected by an oil tanker spill\, plus everyone who relies on salmon from the Fraser watershed — or the multi-billion dollar tourism industry on the south coast. And that’s before counting the climate impacts. \n100% of Lower Mainland coastal nations oppose this pipeline and tnaker project.

DESCRIPTION:~*~*~ part of KILLJOY FEST 2016 ~*~*~ \n*BIPOC only*\n*facilitated by firas* \nwhat is pinkwashing* and what does it have to do with palestine? lets talk about it. \nthis workshop is a basic introduction to how pinkwashing is used by the israeli settler colonial state. there will be a chance to discuss how palestinian queers in palestine are resisting israeli pinkwashing\, whats happening here locally\, and what we can all do to resist pinkwashing. \n*pinkwashing is the use of queer rights to portray states as ‘queer-friendly’ or ‘progressive’ in order to justify and/or mask ongoing settler colonialism.” \nfiras is a palestinian and syrian settler who lives on coast salish territories. they took a course on history of south west asia and north africa (SWANA) at school\, and realized that it didn’t reflect any of their history. so they started doing their own research. for over seven years\, they have been researching and reclaiming palestinian history. they have learned from the work that queer palestinians are doing back home to resist settler colonialism and pinkwashing. inspired by their brilliance\, firas wants to share some of what they’ve taught them with you \n*** \n$5-10 sliding scale\n$25 for a fest-wide pass \nplease PM or email us at hi.killjoy@gmail.com if you’d like to participate for free—no questions asked! \n*** \nACCESSIBILITY \nfor site-specific info\, here is the mount pleasant neighborhood house audit made by ramp for genderfest in 2015: \nhttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aEakPMc3B3BuNlGUsUz2rXuPaQkbRZILUf1WvddtQqQ/edit#gid=0 \nto request childcare or ASL interpretation\, please PM or email us. \nbathrooms will be marked with gender neutral signs! \nKILLJOY FEST events are a mix of BIPOC-only [black // indigenous // people of colour]\, QTBIPOC-only [queer // trans // intersex who are also black // indigenous // people of colour]\, & non-exclusive. please take note! \n*** \nKILLJOY FEST takes place on the ancestral\, traditional\, & unceded lands of the Musqueam\, Skxwú7mesh\, & Tsleil-Waututh peoples. as organizers\, we invite festival participants to join us in reflecting on our varying relationships to these lands.

As writers and artists who are Black Indigenous\, Mixed Race and/or People of Colour & Queer and Trans folks we aim to create art and share stories that come from our work to decolonize our bodies\, stories and ancestors struggles. We have immense gratitude for the folks of this land & we recognize that Indigenous folks have and continue to experience the violence and disconnect through acts of colonization. We recognize as immigrants/ settlers we benefit through these process of colonization and capitalism and continuously aim to work to decolonize the ways we move through in the world and through our writing and art. ★✫\nAs folks of colour organizers who are settlers on this land we aim to create spaces that address and deconstruct process of colonization. We recognize that the starbucks closes at 830 pm the night of this event and this isn’t a permanent solution for folks who need an accessible washroom who are coming to the event.\nFor further information on Heartwood’s physical space\, please check out the following accessibility audits done by the Radical Access Mapping Project. \nHeartwood Community Cafe Audit: @ [NjQyMTgzOTU5MjA4MTA3Omh0dHBzXGEvL3JhZGljYWxhY2Nlc3NpYmxlY29tbXVuaXRpZXMud29yZHByZXNzLmNvbS8yMDExLzA3LzA2L3JoaXpvbWUtY2FmZS1hY2Nlc3MtYXVkaXQvOjo=:https://radicalaccessiblecommunities.wordpress.com/2011/07/06/rhizome-cafe-access-audit/] \n▲▲This event is aiming to be scent reduced so if folks could please be mindful of minimizing/not wearing scented body products:\nTo learn more about what this means read Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha’s Fragrance Free Femme of Colour Realness Draft 1.5: @ [NjQyMTgzOTU5MjA4MTA3Omh0dHBcYS8vd3d3LmJyb3duc3Rhcmdpcmwub3JnLzEvcG9zdC8yMDEyLzAzL2ZyYWdyYW5jZS1mcmVlLWZlbW1lLW9mLWNvbG91ci1yZWFsbmVzcy1kcmFmdC0xNS5odG1sOjo=:http://www.brownstargirl.org/1/post/2012/03/fragrance-free-femme-of-colour-realness-draft-15.html] \n& please also see this article by Peggy Munson on why it’s important to be fragrance free and how to go about it: @ [NjQyMTgzOTU5MjA4MTA3Omh0dHBcYS8vd3d3LnBlZ2d5bXVuc29uLmNvbS9tY3MvZnJhZ3JhbmNlZnJlZS5odG1sOjo=:http://www.peggymunson.com/mcs/fragrancefree.html] \n▲▲We also may have folks coming to the event that have EMF Sensitivities (Electronic Magnetic Frequency Sensitivities.)\nRead more about what this means here:\n@ [NjQyMTgzOTU5MjA4MTA3Omh0dHBcYS8vd3d3LmJlc3QtZW1mLWhlYWx0aC5jb20vZWxlY3Ryb21hZ25ldGljLWh5cGVyc2Vuc2l0aXZpdHkuaHRtbDo6:http://www.best-emf-health.com/electromagnetic-hypersensitivity.html] \nThis means we may need to ask folks to power off cellphones and we will aim to have a section that is away from the wifi where folks with EMS can sit. Folks with EMF sensitivities can get very ill from being around these frequencies and often cannot be in spaces very long if there is wifi and many cellphones in the space. \n▲▲ If there are other accessibility needs/questions that folks have and want to talk about msg Jotika and we can chat about it and together figure it out ▲▲

SUMMARY:Making Space: A Community Panel and Discussion on Social Spaces in Vancouver // AUG 3 + 4!
DESCRIPTION:We acknowledge that this event is happening on the occupied\, traditional\, ancestral\, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples – specifically the sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations. \nFor many communities that have been marginalized\, gathering can be a source and site of healing\, of community growth\, of community bridging and building. In some ways\, especially in cities like Vancouver marked by histories of colonial histories on unceded territories and in a culture of isolation\, creating a space to gather can be seen as a revolutionary act. \nWith the closure of Heartwood\, along with so many other community spaces under threat of reno- and demovictions\, lack of funding\, our community spaces and centres for community and movement building are depleting. What can we do together to create thriving communities?
