SUMMARY:Anti-Pinkwashing: Notes from Palestine
DESCRIPTION:~*~*~ part of KILLJOY FEST 2016 ~*~*~ \n*BIPOC only*\n*facilitated by firas* \nwhat is pinkwashing* and what does it have to do with palestine? lets talk about it. \nthis workshop is a basic introduction to how pinkwashing is used by the israeli settler colonial state. there will be a chance to discuss how palestinian queers in palestine are resisting israeli pinkwashing\, whats happening here locally\, and what we can all do to resist pinkwashing. \n*pinkwashing is the use of queer rights to portray states as ‘queer-friendly’ or ‘progressive’ in order to justify and/or mask ongoing settler colonialism.” \nfiras is a palestinian and syrian settler who lives on coast salish territories. they took a course on history of south west asia and north africa (SWANA) at school\, and realized that it didn’t reflect any of their history. so they started doing their own research. for over seven years\, they have been researching and reclaiming palestinian history. they have learned from the work that queer palestinians are doing back home to resist settler colonialism and pinkwashing. inspired by their brilliance\, firas wants to share some of what they’ve taught them with you \n*** \n$5-10 sliding scale\n$25 for a fest-wide pass \nplease PM or email us at hi.killjoy@gmail.com if you’d like to participate for free—no questions asked! \n*** \nACCESSIBILITY \nfor site-specific info\, here is the mount pleasant neighborhood house audit made by ramp for genderfest in 2015: \nhttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aEakPMc3B3BuNlGUsUz2rXuPaQkbRZILUf1WvddtQqQ/edit#gid=0 \nto request childcare or ASL interpretation\, please PM or email us. \nbathrooms will be marked with gender neutral signs! \nKILLJOY FEST events are a mix of BIPOC-only [black // indigenous // people of colour]\, QTBIPOC-only [queer // trans // intersex who are also black // indigenous // people of colour]\, & non-exclusive. please take note! \n*** \nKILLJOY FEST takes place on the ancestral\, traditional\, & unceded lands of the Musqueam\, Skxwú7mesh\, & Tsleil-Waututh peoples. as organizers\, we invite festival participants to join us in reflecting on our varying relationships to these lands.

SUMMARY:Towards Healing: a night of QTBIPoC storytelling

We want to acknowledge that the work we are doing and the event we are putting together is on occupied land that is untreated and was taken from the Indigenous people of Turtle Island. As writers and artists who are Black Indigenous\, Mixed Race and/or People of Colour & Queer and Trans folks we aim to create art and share stories that come from our work to decolonize our bodies\, stories and ancestors struggles. We have immense gratitude for the folks of this land & we recognize that Indigenous folks have and continue to experience the violence and disconnect through acts of colonization. We recognize as immigrants/ settlers we benefit through these process of colonization and capitalism and continuously aim to work to decolonize the ways we move through in the world and through our writing and art. ★✫\nAs folks of colour organizers who are settlers on this land we aim to create spaces that address and deconstruct process of colonization. We will let folks know asap \n▲▲There are two gender neutral bathrooms more info below. \n▲▲Washrooms are not accessible for wheelchairs and scooters. Heartwood has made an agreement with the neighboring Starbucks\, which allows Heartwood patrons to use their wheelchair and scooter accessible restrooms. Starbucks who have kindly welcomed folks to use their fully accessible washrooms without the need to purchase anything. We recognize that the starbucks closes at 830 pm the night of this event and this isn’t a permanent solution for folks who need an accessible washroom who are coming to the event.\nFor further information on Heartwood’s physical space\, please check out the following accessibility audits done by the Radical Access Mapping Project. \nHeartwood Community Cafe Audit: @ [NjQyMTgzOTU5MjA4MTA3Omh0dHBzXGEvL3JhZGljYWxhY2Nlc3NpYmxlY29tbXVuaXRpZXMud29yZHByZXNzLmNvbS8yMDExLzA3LzA2L3JoaXpvbWUtY2FmZS1hY2Nlc3MtYXVkaXQvOjo=:https://radicalaccessiblecommunities.wordpress.com/2011/07/06/rhizome-cafe-access-audit/] \n▲▲This event is aiming to be scent reduced so if folks could please be mindful of minimizing/not wearing scented body products:\nTo learn more about what this means read Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha’s Fragrance Free Femme of Colour Realness Draft 1.5: @ [NjQyMTgzOTU5MjA4MTA3Omh0dHBcYS8vd3d3LmJyb3duc3Rhcmdpcmwub3JnLzEvcG9zdC8yMDEyLzAzL2ZyYWdyYW5jZS1mcmVlLWZlbW1lLW9mLWNvbG91ci1yZWFsbmVzcy1kcmFmdC0xNS5odG1sOjo=:http://www.brownstargirl.org/1/post/2012/03/fragrance-free-femme-of-colour-realness-draft-15.html] \n& please also see this article by Peggy Munson on why it’s important to be fragrance free and how to go about it: @ [NjQyMTgzOTU5MjA4MTA3Omh0dHBcYS8vd3d3LnBlZ2d5bXVuc29uLmNvbS9tY3MvZnJhZ3JhbmNlZnJlZS5odG1sOjo=:http://www.peggymunson.com/mcs/fragrancefree.html] \n▲▲We also may have folks coming to the event that have EMF Sensitivities (Electronic Magnetic Frequency Sensitivities.)\nRead more about what this means here:\n@ [NjQyMTgzOTU5MjA4MTA3Omh0dHBcYS8vd3d3LmJlc3QtZW1mLWhlYWx0aC5jb20vZWxlY3Ryb21hZ25ldGljLWh5cGVyc2Vuc2l0aXZpdHkuaHRtbDo6:http://www.best-emf-health.com/electromagnetic-hypersensitivity.html] \nThis means we may need to ask folks to power off cellphones and we will aim to have a section that is away from the wifi where folks with EMS can sit. Folks with EMF sensitivities can get very ill from being around these frequencies and often cannot be in spaces very long if there is wifi and many cellphones in the space. \n▲▲ If there are other accessibility needs/questions that folks have and want to talk about msg Jotika and we can chat about it and together figure it out ▲▲

DESCRIPTION:We acknowledge that this event is happening on the occupied\, traditional\, ancestral\, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples – specifically the sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations. \nFor many communities that have been marginalized\, gathering can be a source and site of healing\, of community growth\, of community bridging and building. In some ways\, especially in cities like Vancouver marked by histories of colonial histories on unceded territories and in a culture of isolation\, creating a space to gather can be seen as a revolutionary act. \nWith the closure of Heartwood\, along with so many other community spaces under threat of reno- and demovictions\, lack of funding\, our community spaces and centres for community and movement building are depleting. What can we do together to create thriving communities? How can we make space? \nJoin us for a TWO-PART event showcasing and lifting voices of East Vancouver community members creating and facilitating community spaces in Vancouver. \n– – – \nWednesday\, August 3rd\, 7pm – 9pm \n// Making Space: A Community Panel on Social Spaces in Vancouver //\nAt this panel\, we showcase local organizers and folks leading community spaces in East Vancouver. Posing questions on Vancouver’s climate of unaffordability and gentrification\, isolation\, rising movements\, the importance of physical space in solidarity building and more! \nModerator:\nMelissa Fong | Centre A \nPanelists:\nAnthony Meza Wilson | Gallery Gachet\nAna Rose Carrico | Red Gate Arts Society\nLindsay Mestatew | Killjoy\nIngrid Méndez | Sanctuary Health & Watari Counselling & Support Services\nMelanie Matining | Heartwood \nWe’re happy to announce that we’ve secured ASL interpretation for August 3rd! The interpreter is Melanie Valencia. \nThis event is by donation with all proceeds going towards Killjoy\, whose focus is to create events for black\, indigenous\, mixed race\, people of colour who are also queer\, trans\, two-spirit\, intersex people. \n– – – \nThursday\, August 4th\, 7pm – 9pm \n// MAKING SPACE: Community Discussion on Collaboration & Creation //\nQuestions that arise from the Making Space panel on August 3rd will be brought forth to a world cafe style community discussion to tackle the queries and barriers\, to share resources\, and finally\, to collaborate and create. The discussion will be facilitated by Women Transforming Cities. \nJoin us for these necessary conversations! \nIf you’d like to request ASL interpretation\, please contact Melanie at melanie@heartwoodcc.ca. \nThis event is by donation with all proceeds going towards Black Lives Matter – Vancouver\, BC.\n– – – \nAccessibility Info: \nThere are two gender neutral bathrooms that are not accessible for wheelchairs and scooters. The Starbucks next door has kindly agreed to provide wheelchair and scooter accessible bathrooms without the need to purchase anything. \nFor further information on Heartwood’s physical space\, please check out the following accessibility audits done by the Radical Access Mapping Project. \nhttps://radicalaccessiblecommunities.wordpress.com/2011/07/06/rhizome-cafe-access-audit/

SUMMARY:Two-Spirit\, Queers\, Trans\, Intersex and Bi People of Colour Pride March
DESCRIPTION:With recent events that have affected us with violence and suspicion against our communities which has been the case in the colonial history of these occupied territories of the Coast Salish peoples including the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil Waututh\, we will march together in solidarity with Two-Spirit\, Trans\, Intersex\, Bisexual and Queers of Colour in Pride on the day Vancouver Pride used to be\, the day after the Powell Street Festival. \nWith these recent events\, we have seen the rise of blackphobia and Islamophobia with our Two-Spirit\, Trans\, Intersex and bisexual people of colour communities. We will gather at Victory Square Park on Monday August 1st at 1 pm\, then march down Pender St. through Chinatown toMain Street and then to Crab Park where we will have a healing circle. We ask our allies to help us in solidarity with marshalling and security. \nRecently City Council invited the different Queer Organizations to meet to talk about how to respond to Orlando. But the Queer of Colour organizations were not invited. Then the Mayor met with Black Lives Matter\, but again the rest of the Queers of Colour organizations were not invited. Queer Muslims and Latinx Queers were profoundly affected by the events of Orlando\, yet we have been forgotten in this process. We met with Pride organizers after the Vigil they had organized at the Vancouver Art Gallery and suggested that we need to have some sort of an inclusive healing ceremony at Pride. But Pride too has forgotten us in this process. \nNow Vancouver Police Department has announced that we will be participating in the Pride Parade. We also want to announce that many of us will not be participating in the Pride Parade in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. We will be participating in the Trans\, Gender Queer and Two-Spirit March on Friday July 29th\, the Dyke March on Saturday July 30th and we will have our own Two-Spirit\, Queers\, Trans\, Intersex and Bisexual People of Colour on Monday August 1st.

SUMMARY:Anniversary of Mount Polley Mining Disaster
DESCRIPTION:MARKING THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOUNT POLLEY MINING DISASTER \nGet on the bus and show your support for Yuct Ne Senxiymetkwe Camp! \nSecwepemc peoples are calling on all to come and stand with us in resistance against mining and the provincial government’s decision to re-issue a full permit for Mount Polley. Indigenous Peoples are at the forefront of the impacts and consequences of climate change. The root of climate change in Canada is the continuing genocide of Indigenous Peoples\, that is\, the continuation of destructive and dangerous resource extractive projects approved by the Provincial and Federal governments that have no legal jurisdiction to do so. We find ourselves in a state of urgency and crisis. The continuing violations of the rights and responsibilities of Indigenous Peoples by industries not appropriately regulated\, regularly causing environmental damage and destruction\, and most importantly\, that do not have consent by Indigenous Peoples will not be tolerated! \n*********************************\nPublic event in Vancouver\n********************************* \nMonday August 1\, 2016\nDinner at 5:30 pm\, Event at 6 pm\n1803 East 1st Ave (just east of Commercial Drive)\nunceded xʷməθkwəy̓əm\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh\, and Səl̓ílwətaʔ territories\, Vancouver \nCome learn about resistance to Imperial Metals Mount Polley mine and broader mining justice struggles WITH Cecilia Point (Musqueam)\, Kanahus Manuel (Secwepemc Women’s Warrior Society)\, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip (UBCIC)\, Sacheen and Crow (Ancestral Pride)\, Sam Nock (Cree-Metis poet)\, Ricardo Segovia (hydrogeologist)\, Harjap Grewal (Council of Canadians) and Rita Wong (updates on Site C and Unist’ot’en Camp). \nAccessibility info: Free event. Please email payet.scudellari@gmail.com to reserve a bed spot. \n* While at camp\, everyone is able is asked to cover one cooking or cleanup shift. This is a collective effort and we are all responsible for keeping the land clean. \n*********************************\nAbout Mount Polley Disaster\n********************************* \nTwo years ago\, on August 4th 2014\, the largest environmental disaster in British Columbia’s history unfolded. The dam to Imperial Metal’s Mount Polley mine’s tailings pond broke and unleashed 2.5 billion gallons of contaminated water and 4.5 million cubic metres of metals laden silt into Hazeltine Creek\, Polley Lake and Quesnel Lake on the way to the Fraser River Watershed. \nThe Yuct Ne Senxiymetkwe Camp was setup two years ago as a Secwepemc encampment at the entrance of the Imperial Metals’ Mount Polley Mine. The anniversary will bring together Indigenous peoples and supporters to the Yuct Ne Senxiymetkwe Camp to light a sacred fire and strengthen our resolve to stop destructive mining and other extractive projects taking place on Indigenous lands without free prior and informed consent.\n*****************************************\nCon motivo del aniversario de la catástrofe minera de Mount Polley los invitamos a mostrar su apoyo a la población Yuct Ne Senxiymetkwe y acompañarnos en el autobús que viajará de la ciudad de Vancouver a territorio Secwepemc.

SUMMARY:2016 Vancouver Trans March
DESCRIPTION:2016 Trans\, Two Spirit\, Genderqueer\, Intersex March on Unceded Coast Salish Territory \nDON’T HIDE YOUR PRIDE! UNCAGE YOUR RAGE! \nCalling trans\, genderqueer\, two-spirit\, intersex people\, and allies: lets take to the streets! On July 29th we come together for a political protest and a celebration of gender diversity! \nWear what you want\, and feel free to be FABULOUS. Wear what makes you feel great! Bring noisemakers! \nAllies are enthusiastically invited and welcome. \nASSEMBLE at 5:30pm at Clark Park\, E 14th and Commercial Dr. to get string for your signs\, arrange rides\, meet volunteers\, and get pumped!\n\n5:45pm Land Recognition\, Opening Welcome\, and invitation for those with mobility aides\, scooters\, wheelchairs\, children\, and folks who move at a slower pace to move up front and set the pace for the march. We will begin marching at 6pm! \nWe will march north on Commercial Drive\, turn east on Grant St\, and end at Victoria Park with speeches and performances by community members. \nWe acknowledge that this march is taking place on unceded Coast Salish Territories (Musqueam\, Skwxwú7mesh\, and Tsleil Waututh Territories.) This march stands in solidarity with indigenous people’s resistance to colonization. This march operates in a spirit of inclusion and solidarity with two-spirit people who may or may not also claim identities such as trans and genderqueer. \nThis march acknowledges the erasure and injustice of colonization towards two-spirit people. \n♥ – CELEBRATION – ♥ \nThis march is an opportunity for two-spirit\, genderqueer and trans people to be celebrated and loudly express pride in themselves and their community. There’s a lot to celebrate: \n– The diverse ways we define and express our genders. \n– Our bodies are beautiful in all our forms. \n– We are strong\, resourceful and resilient\, despite a host of barriers to our dignity and freedom! \n– Our long\, often unmentioned\, history of protest and activism. \n– We are beautiful\, brilliant and creative! \n– Two-spirit\, trans and genderqueer people are sexy! \n– We stand in solidarity for the safety & dignity of all sex workers! \n♥ – PROTEST – ♥ \nMake some noise and let the world know what needs to change! Bring noise makers\, megaphones\, and drums! \n– Violence: social\, institutional and physical violence against our minds\, bodies and souls. \n– Bullying at school\, on the job\, by the police and by our governments. \n– Erasure from social histories\, despite the fact that we have always been here and always will be! \n– Denial of express protections against discrimination\, harassment\, hate-crimes and hate speech in legislation! \n– Legal\, administrative and institutional failures to recognize & respect our gender identities and accord us the dignity we deserve and demand! \n– Employment\, housing/shelter and educational insecurity and marginalization! \n– Inadequate medical services (e.g. Phalloplasty coverage NOW!) \n– Oppressive delivery of medical services! Gate-keep much? \n– A prison system that abuses transgender people by placing them in solitary confinement and denying them appropriate medical care. \n– Lack of support and inquiry into the missing and murdered Indigenous trans women\, trans women of colour\, and trans people of colour in North America (Turtle Island). \nMARCH POLICIES \nIn order to make this even accessible to all of our organizers\, performers\, and volunteers\, we are trying this year to make this event scent-\, and smoke-free. This means:\n– Don’t wear scented colognes\, perfumes\, deodorants on the day of the march.\n– Do your best to eliminate scents from your body and clothing (follow the tips on our accessibility page).\n– Don’t light up or vape up during the march or post-march festival. Participants caught smoking or vaping in the march or post-march festival may be asked to leave by marshalls. \nThis year\, in order to keep the focus of the march on individuals rather than organizations\, we have a no banner policy. All non-profit organizations\, businesses\, political parties\, and unions are asked not to bring a banner to this event. Instead\, participants are asked to carry placards. This is a march of the trans community\, not a parade to promote businesses or organizations. \nA LOW-BARRIER MARCH \nWe are trying to make this march as accessible as possible to as many people as possible. To reduce barriers\, we are: \n– providing accessibility information on our “accessibility” page (https://transpridevancouver.wordpress.com/2013/07/03/current-accessibility-information/)\n– renting a van to travel behind the march for those who can’t walk the full distance. There is ONE wheelchair accessible spot in the van: if you need to use it you must contact us in advance.\n– providing bus tickets for people to get to and from the march. Contact us if you need bus tickets.\n– providing “brown bag” food at the post-march festival after the march. \n♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦ \nNOTE ABOUT PERMISSION:\nThis march is taking place without a march permit from the City of Vancouver or paid police services. We have the right and freedom to peacefully assemble and associate in public space. As we’ve done the last five years\, let’s use our constitutionally guaranteed freedom to assemble and express ourselves! \n♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦

SUMMARY:Climate Convergence Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this month’s climate convergence meeting on Wednesday July 27th\, 7pm-8:30pm at Grandview Calvary Baptist Church (1801 East 1st Ave.)   This event will take place on unceded Coast Salish territory. \nClimate Convergence is a grassroots network that aims to facilate connection and collaboration between diverse strands of the climate justice movement in Metro Vancouver.   Whether you’re a member of a group or a concerned individual\, this is the place to connect and get involved with the climate justice movement. To learn more about our aims and guiding principles you can check out our Points of Unity and Community Agreement on the climate convergencewebsite. \nAt this month’s meeting we will focus on mobilizing for the August 17th public consultation on the Kinder Morgan Transmountain Pipeline (TMX) happening in Vancouver (venue and time have not been announced yet).  There are two sets of consultations currently being conducted by the Federal government: one on the TMX and another on the National Climate Plan.   See the summary of our last meeting below for more information on the TMX town halls and the National Climate Plan town halls. \nAlso this month we will have a speaker coming from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers to talk about their current lockout and the exciting Delivering Community Power campaign\, which is all about how our federal government can act to address climate change by modernizing the postal system. \nFinally\, we will have updates on a number of ongoing campaigns and a report from the Welcoming Committee on efforts to build Climate Convergence and how you can get involved. \nAs always\, you can find a list of upcoming events and news articles on ourwebsite. If you are organizing an event you would like us to add to the site\, please get in touch. \nLooking forward to seeing you all at our next meeting! \nIn sol\,\nClaris Figueira on behalf of the Climate Convergence communications committee. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKey points from the June CC meeting: \nWe had a very constructive discussion at the last meeting\, with more than 20 people in attendance with a range of groups represented.  Our discussion revolved around two consultation processes the federal government has recently inititated:  National Climate Plan town halls\, and consultations around the Kinder Morgan TMX. \n1. National Climate Plan Town Halls\nThese town halls are already underway across the country\, but we need to make sure local MPs are pushed to hold consultations. Many Liberal MPs are conveniently unaware of this process or are reluctant to hold consultations\, and some NDP MPs have refused to engage with the process outright.  The People’s Climate Plan campaign is organizing both canvassing and PCP pre-meetings before national climate plan consultations. \nUpcoming town halls: \nJuly 12th\, North Vancouver- facebook event here\nJuly 14th\, Surrey- facebook event here\nJuly 16th\, Burnaby North Seymour- facebook event here \n**Check The People’s Climate Plan website for further details and updates. \n2. TMX Ministerial Panel Town Halls\nThe dates for the TMX consultations has been released but we do not yet know venues or times.  Most of them are “invitational\,” meaning they will not generally be open to the public.  The key events for the climate justice movement will be the “public town hall with open participation” events.  The main consultation we are aiming to mobilize around in Vancouver will beAugust 17th.  Check out the full schedule on the government website here. \nBoth the TMX Ministerial Panel consultations and the National Climate Plan town halls will be finished by late August\, with the TMX report submitted to cabinet on November 1st and the National Climate Strategy expected to be presented in September when the First Ministers reconvene. \nDuring the meeting we discussed how to strategically approach both the TMX Panel consultations and the National Climate Plan consultations.  That these consultations are happening at all is a victory for the climate justice movement\, but many people expressed concern that we need to do more than merely participate in these consultations and town halls.  Already it is clear from consultations in Ontario and elsewhere that Liberal MPs are simply hearing what they want to hear.   We need to make sure we show up as a powerful\, unified voice for climate justice and demand substantial change. \nWe have a definite schedule for the TMX consultations happening in mid to late August in Vancouver\, which gives us time to organize around those events.  We’ll start working out messaging and organizing for the TMX actions at our meeting on July 27th – please come out and help!

The Tent City stands as a symbol of the housing crisis and the organized strength of the community in demanding that governments at all levels address this crisis\, starting with the longtime demand of building 100% social housing at welfare and pension rates on the city-owned land at 58 W Hastings. \nOver the coming days\, Tent City is looking for volunteers to spend time at the site. Volunteers are there to support the residents of Tent City in keeping the site as safe and clean as possible; playing a supporting role in dealing with the police and fire department; and helping in collective response to emergencies (especially possible overdoses) by calling 911 and assisting harm reduction volunteers. \nTo volunteer\, contact crompton.n@gmail.com or 604 358 5823
