SUMMARY:Two-Spirit\, Queers\, Trans\, Intersex and Bi People of Colour Pride March
DESCRIPTION:With recent events that have affected us with violence and suspicion against our communities which has been the case in the colonial history of these occupied territories of the Coast Salish peoples including the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil Waututh\, we will march together in solidarity with Two-Spirit\, Trans\, Intersex\, Bisexual and Queers of Colour in Pride on the day Vancouver Pride used to be\, the day after the Powell Street Festival. \nWith these recent events\, we have seen the rise of blackphobia and Islamophobia with our Two-Spirit\, Trans\, Intersex and bisexual people of colour communities. We will gather at Victory Square Park on Monday August 1st at 1 pm\, then march down Pender St. through Chinatown toMain Street and then to Crab Park where we will have a healing circle. We ask our allies to help us in solidarity with marshalling and security. \nRecently City Council invited the different Queer Organizations to meet to talk about how to respond to Orlando. But the Queer of Colour organizations were not invited. Then the Mayor met with Black Lives Matter\, but again the rest of the Queers of Colour organizations were not invited. Queer Muslims and Latinx Queers were profoundly affected by the events of Orlando\, yet we have been forgotten in this process.We met with Pride organizers after the Vigil they had organized at the Vancouver Art Gallery and suggested that we need to have some sort of an inclusive healing ceremony at Pride. But Pride too has forgotten us in this process. \nNow Vancouver Police Department has announced that we will be participating in the Pride Parade. We also want to announce that many of us will not be participating in the Pride Parade in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. We will be participating in the Trans\, Gender Queer and Two-Spirit March on Friday July 29th\, the Dyke March on Saturday July 30th and we will have our own Two-Spirit\, Queers\, Trans\, Intersex and Bisexual People of Colour on Monday August 1st.

The dam to Imperial Metal’s Mount Polley mine’s tailings pond broke and unleashed 2.5 billion gallons of contaminated water and 4.5 million cubic metres of metals laden silt into Hazeltine Creek\, Polley Lake and Quesnel Lake on the way to the Fraser River Watershed. \nThe Yuct Ne Senxiymetkwe Camp was setup two years ago as a Secwepemc encampment at the entrance of the Imperial Metals’ Mount Polley Mine. Gate-keep much? \n– A prison system that abuses transgender people by placing them in solitary confinement and denying them appropriate medical care. \n– Lack of support and inquiry into the missing and murdered Indigenous trans women\, trans women of colour\, and trans people of colour in North America (Turtle Island). \nMARCH POLICIES \nIn order to make this even accessible to all of our organizers\, performers\, and volunteers\, we are trying this year to make this event scent-\, and smoke-free. This means:\n– Don’t wear scented colognes\, perfumes\, deodorants on the day of the march.\n– Do your best to eliminate scents from your body and clothing (follow the tips on our accessibility page).\n– Don’t light up or vape up during the march or post-march festival. SUMMARY:Climate Convergence Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this month’s climate convergence meeting on Wednesday July 27th\, 7pm-8:30pm at Grandview Calvary Baptist Church (1801 East 1st Ave.)   This event will take place on unceded Coast Salish territory. \nClimate Convergence is a grassroots network that aims to facilate connection and collaboration between diverse strands of the climate justice movement in Metro Vancouver.   Whether you’re a member of a group or a concerned individual\, this is the place to connect and get involved with the climate justice movement. To learn more about our aims and guiding principles you can check out our Points of Unity and Community Agreement on the climate convergencewebsite. \nAt this month’s meeting we will focus on mobilizing for the August 17th public consultation on the Kinder Morgan Transmountain Pipeline (TMX) happening in Vancouver (venue and time have not been announced yet).  There are two sets of consultations currently being conducted by the Federal government: one on the TMX and another on the National Climate Plan.   See the summary of our last meeting below for more information on the TMX town halls and the National Climate Plan town halls. \nAlso this month we will have a speaker coming from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers to talk about their current lockout and the exciting Delivering Community Power campaign\, which is all about how our federal government can act to address climate change by modernizing the postal system. \nFinally\, we will have updates on a number of ongoing campaigns and a report from the Welcoming Committee on efforts to build Climate Convergence and how you can get involved. \nAs always\, you can find a list of upcoming events and news articles on ourwebsite. If you are organizing an event you would like us to add to the site\, please get in touch. \nLooking forward to seeing you all at our next meeting! \nIn sol\,\nClaris Figueira on behalf of the Climate Convergence communications committee. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKey points from the June CC meeting: \nWe had a very constructive discussion at the last meeting\, with more than 20 people in attendance with a range of groups represented.  Our discussion revolved around two consultation processes the federal government has recently inititated:  National Climate Plan town halls\, and consultations around the Kinder Morgan TMX. \n1. National Climate Plan Town Halls\nThese town halls are already underway across the country\, but we need to make sure local MPs are pushed to hold consultations. Many Liberal MPs are conveniently unaware of this process or are reluctant to hold consultations\, and some NDP MPs have refused to engage with the process outright.  The People’s Climate Plan campaign is organizing both canvassing and PCP pre-meetings before national climate plan consultations. \nUpcoming town halls: \nJuly 12th\, North Vancouver- facebook event here\nJuly 14th\, Surrey- facebook event here\nJuly 16th\, Burnaby North Seymour- facebook event here \n**Check The People’s Climate Plan website for further details and updates. \n2. TMX Ministerial Panel Town Halls\nThe dates for the TMX consultations has been released but we do not yet know venues or times.  Most of them are “invitational\,” meaning they will not generally be open to the public.  The key events for the climate justice movement will be the “public town hall with open participation” events.  The main consultation we are aiming to mobilize around in Vancouver will beAugust 17th.  Check out the full schedule on the government website here. \nBoth the TMX Ministerial Panel consultations and the National Climate Plan town halls will be finished by late August\, with the TMX report submitted to cabinet on November 1st and the National Climate Strategy expected to be presented in September when the First Ministers reconvene. \nDuring the meeting we discussed how to strategically approach both the TMX Panel consultations and the National Climate Plan consultations.  That these consultations are happening at all is a victory for the climate justice movement\, but many people expressed concern that we need to do more than merely participate in these consultations and town halls.  Already it is clear from consultations in Ontario and elsewhere that Liberal MPs are simply hearing what they want to hear.   We need to make sure we show up as a powerful\, unified voice for climate justice and demand substantial change. \nWe have a definite schedule for the TMX consultations happening in mid to late August in Vancouver\, which gives us time to organize around those events.  We’ll start working out messaging and organizing for the TMX actions at our meeting on July 27th – please come out and help!

The Tent City stands as a symbol of the housing crisis and the organized strength of the community in demanding that governments at all levels address this crisis\, starting with the longtime demand of building 100% social housing at welfare and pension rates on the city-owned land at 58 W Hastings. \nOver the coming days\, Tent City is looking for volunteers to spend time at the site. The Pride Run & Walk offers a 5.5k walk or run route along the sea wall. Costumes are a highlight as are the popular Disco Water stations. DESCRIPTION:An Evening in Damascus takes you on an elegant trip down the Silk Road\, visiting the beauty of Syria in the Heart of Vancouver\, leaving the memories of the civil war behind and bringing people together for a good cause. \nHosted by Danny Ramadan\, a proud gay Syrian refugee and the Grand Marshall of the Vancouver Gay Pride Parade\, and the Divine Road – a local gathering to sponsor a Syrian lesbian couple to come to Canada. \nThe application to sponsor those two women is supported by Rainbow Refugee Society\, an organization that works tirelessly on helping inland and privately sponsored LGBTQ-identified refugees. \nThe event is hosted on the elegant Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden\, adding a beautiful backdrop to what is sure to be one of the best and most glamourous Pride events this year. \nThe evening starts at 7 pm\, as you walk through the beautiful gates of the Chinese Garden\, gather with friends and grab some wine\, walk around the space\, and enjoy the summery night in one of the most amazing gardens in Vancouver. \nAt 8 pm\, the show begins\, featuring local bands who are supporting our efforts to bring those two women from the Middle East to Canada.\nThe bands we have secured so far are:\n– AutoHeart.\n– TBA. \nAt 9.30 pm\, an auction for some amazing artwork will take place\, led by a local Auctioneer. \nAward-winning Irish photographer Tommie Lehane\, who lived in Syria for ten weeks\, donated Museum-quality photographs he took in Damascus to be sold in our auction. \nOther artwork donated by local artists will also be sold. \nA “Private Night of Storytelling” with Danny Ramadan\, known for his public speaking\, for you and four other friends will also be among the items to be auctioned. \nAll the funds raised during the event will go into the private sponsorship application of the mentioned lesbian couple from Damascus\, who are now living in the Middle East\, to join us here in Vancouver. \nCome and grab a glass of wine\, listen to some awesome tunes and enjoy the company of other queer and trans folks celebrating Pride\, and gathering for a good cause. \nEntrance by a suggested donation of $20. We lasted for 12 days largely because of the powerful support of the community. Together we have brought demovictions into focus as a central part of the housing and homelessness crisis. \nThe occupation is over but the struggle to protect peoples homes and communities continues. A process of mass demoviction (eviction through demolition) is underway in Metrotown\, and thousands of people will be demovicted in Metrotown in coming years unless we fight back. \nOur appeals to the City to do the right thing have not been heeded. We are therefore calling on the demovicted to grow our collective power and fight back. All six of the inhabited continents have been sites of genocide. Genocide can be an ongoing process and is always an exercise of power and an assertion of presumed supremacy. Genocide Across Space and Time is both a forum and opportunity for popular education\, consciousness-raising\, and collective action. From defense of human rights to anti-imperialist struggles\, resistance to genocide manifests itself in ways as diverse as the peoples subjected to past and present genocidal campaigns. DESCRIPTION:Come Together: A Queer & Trans Open Mic Night is a monthly inclusive and family-friendly event to showcase the talents of queer and trans* musicians\, poets\, spoken word artists and performers of all things wonderful. Got a talent that’s looking for a stage? We got you! \nThis month\, we’ll be coming together to fundraiser for Rainbow Refugee Committee\, a grassroots organization advocating for the rights and providing services for LGBTQAI2+ refugees. \nFor more information about Rainbow Refugee\, visit their website atwww.rainbowrefugee.ca. \n‘Come Together’ is held monthly at Heartwood in East Vancouver. Heartwood serves delicious food\, tea/coffee\, alcohol… come have dinner and join us! Space is limited to about 70 people so get there early for food and a seat. \nDue to Heartwood’s closure on August 15th\, this will unfortunately be our last Come Together: A Queer & Trans Open Mic Night at Heartwood!
