SUMMARY:Parade to Stop Demovictions and celebrate the community resistance of the anti-imperial squat
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParade to Stop Demovictions and celebrate the community resistance of the\nanti-imperial squat\nWhen: \n2pm this Saturday\, July 23rd. \nWhere: \nThe parade will start at the intersection of Dunblane Ave and Imperial Street \nWe started our protest occupation – the anti-imperial squat – of the demovicted apartment building at 5025 Imperial Street in Metrotown on Saturday July 9th. We lasted for 12 days largely because of the powerful support of the community. Together we have brought demovictions into focus as a central part of the housing and homelessness crisis. \nThe occupation is over but the struggle to protect peoples homes and communities continues. A process of mass demoviction (eviction through demolition) is underway in Metrotown\, and thousands of people will be demovicted in Metrotown in coming years unless we fight back. \nOur appeals to the City to do the right thing have not been heeded. We are therefore calling on the demovicted to grow our collective power and fight back. When a developer buys our buildings\, let us declare that we will not be driven out. \nCome to the rally this Saturday to celebrate community and send the message to Mayor Corrigan and all levels of government that: “hell no\, we won’t go.” We encourage you to wear bright colours and or traditional regalia. \nStop Demovictions Burnaby acknowledges that our anti-displacement struggle is taking place on the dispossessed and unceded lands of the Tsleil-Waututh\, Kwikwetlem\, and Qayqayt Coast Salish nations.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Fat Camp 2016
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 23rd\, 2016\n8:30am-7pm\nSFU Burnaby\, MBC 2290\nUnceded Coast Salish Territories \nREGISTRATION:\nhttps://sfpirg.wufoo.com/forms/qk39bkc0nt92dq/ \nCome explore FAT POLITICS in all its intersectional glory! Join us for an exciting and transformative day of workshops\, and learn about resisting fat oppression and integrating fat politics into your life and your activism! \nFat oppression targets those of us who are considered ‘too fat.’ But every one of us\, no matter what our body size\, is impacted by this form of injustice\, and each of us can play a role in tearing it down. Let’s work together to create a world in which no one is taught to hate their own or anyone else’s body.\n\nFat Camp 2016 will be held at SFU Burnaby\, on unceded Coast Salish Territories. Based on our current knowledge\, this includes the territories of the Musqueam\, Skxwú7mesh\, Kwikwetlem & Tsleil-Waututh nations. \nFat Camp is brought to you by Fat Panic! Vancouver\, PeerNetBC and SFPIRG! \nAdmission is by donation\, with a suggested sliding scale donation of $0-$50 (cash or cheques made out to “SFPIRG” are accepted). No one is turned away due to lack of funds. \nDonations go directly towards honoraria for workshop facilitators and for lunch/dinner for participants. If you have the resources and capacity\, please consider donating to help ensure that Fat Camp is more accessible and sustainable for everyone! If you are able and would like to donate more\, that’s okay\, too! Please bring your donation with you to Fat Camp. \nStay tuned for more info about a special workshop with Shilo George on Sunday\, July 24th – hosted by PeerNetBC! The workshop will hold up to 15 people. We are looking into funding for ASL for July 24th. \n*** \nFat Camp Schedule \n8:30-9am\nRegistration \n9-10:15am\nWelcome to Fat Camp!\nAcknowledgements\nGuidelines\nCommunity Connector \n10:30am-2pm\nFat Politics 101 – Introduction to Fat Politics for Beginners\nFat Politics 202 – Advanced Fat Politics for people with a solid understanding of intersectional anti-oppressive Fat Politics \n2-3pm\nLunch! \n3-5pm\nSuper Fat Caucus\nSmall & Mid-Sized Fat Caucus\nAllyship Workshop (for people who do not identify as Fat) \n5:15-6:15pm\nCommunity Talking Circle \n6:15-7pm\nDinner and Social Time! \n*** \nAccessibility Info \nSFPIRG and our community partners and organizers are committed to creating accessible programming and events\, including all of Fat Camp! \nFat Camp will be held in a wheelchair/scooter accessible venue with access to accessible washrooms nearby. We are also aiming to have a variety of seating options available. \nGender-neutral washrooms are available outside the workshop space. \nIn order to enable people to attend without experiencing hardship\, bus tickets and money for dependent care (this can include childcare\, eldercare\, etc.) are available upon request. Please indicate during registration if you will require either subsidy. \nWhile we cannot ensure a fully scent-free event in this setting\, we’re aiming to create a scent-reduced environment by not bringing additional scents into the space. Exposure to laundry products\, colognes\, hairspray\, and many other scented products can trigger serious health reactions in individuals with asthma\, allergies\, migraines\, and/or chemical sensitivities. We ask that you not wear/ apply/ or bring any scented products into this space. If you do so\, we may need to ask you to leave so others can safely stay in the space. If you find yourself being impacted by someone’s use of scented products during the conference\, speak with any one of the organizers. We know that this can be a big step for many people. As Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha says in Fragrance Free Femme of Colour Realness\, “Cutting out scents may seem like a pain in the ass\, but it means that awesome\, ass-kicking community members you love can attend events you’re at and make out with you without having seizures\, throwing up or otherwise getting really sick.” Please\, bring your amazing self\, and keep the scents at home!\n(More info here: http://thinkbeforeyoustink.com/howtogofragrancefree.html\, http://www.brownstargirl.org/blog/fragrance-free-femme-of-colour-realness-draft-15\, http://eastbaymeditation.org/accessibility/scentfree.html) \nFat Camp will be nut-free and peanut-free. Absolutely no nuts or peanuts will be permitted within the event space in order to create an allergen-free environment for all participants. This includes (but is not limited to) products like hazelnuts\, cashews\, almonds\, coconuts\, walnuts\, coconut oil\, coconut milk\, and peanut butter. \nIf you have any other allergies or sensitivities that we need to know about so that you can participate fully and safely\, please let us know during registration. \nASL interpretation is being booked for Fat Camp! Deadline for ASL registration is July 11th. Interpreter names will be posted when they have been booked. \nSome folks are sensitive and/or get sick from electromagnetic frequency radiation (EMF). This can include radiation from cell phones\, Wi-Fi\, fluorescent lights\, and more. SFU Burnaby has Wi-Fi set up throughout its campus\, including in the Fat Camp workshop space. In order to reduce EMF exposure\, we will strive to minimize fluorescent light usage and utilize natural lighting whenever possible. We will also have a designated area in the workshop space for folks with EMF sensitivities and folks who are willing to turn off their cellphones during the workshops. Folks who need to keep cellphones on (for work\, for emergency contacts\, etc.) will be asked not to sit in the EMF-reduced area. \nIf there is any other way we can make Fat Camp more accessible for you\, please let us know during registration! \n*** \nFacilitator and Organizer Bios \nComing Soon!

SUMMARY:BBQ and Vigil for our lost homes in support of the Demovictions Squat
DESCRIPTION:Thursday July 14 \n5pm onwards through the night \nOutside the Demovictions Squat\, 5025 Imperial Street\, Burnaby \nIf Amacon is successful in obtaining its immediate injunction and removal order then the courts could be ordering police to remove occupiers as early as the afternoon of that same day. We are calling for the community and other partisans of housing justice to come out for an all night vigil for the hundreds of homes that have been lost to demovictions\, and the thousands that will be lost if the Downtown Metrotown plan is passed. The vigil will also be supporting the occupation and bearing witness to any police action against the Demovictions occupiers. \n  \nWe plan this vigil as a family-friendly\, supportive space\, with no arrest risk. We will have music and BBQs on the lawn and encourage you to come and bring food to grill and share with others. While there will be a couple speakers to update and discuss the issues of demoviction\, this is not a rally but a place for supporters to gather and talk and share. Please contact us with any questions or concerns.

SUMMARY:News conference on Demovictions squat injunction
DESCRIPTION:News conference about the results of the Demovictions court injunction hearing \nThursday July 14 \n11am \nOutside the Demovictions Squat\, 5025 Imperial Street\, Burnaby \nAmacon is asking for a court injunction to immediately remove the “trespassers” from the Imperial Street buildings. They claim that they intend to begin hazardous material removal on Monday and plan to demolish the first week of August\, and that the occupation is in the way of their work. We will be arguing against this application and will discuss the terms of our counter-argument at the news conference afterwards.

SUMMARY:Anti-Transit Police Demo
DESCRIPTION:In solidarity with #BLMTO & #BLMvan \nA video was made public in the past week that showed transit police officer Edguardo Diaz Rodriguez beat down a 22-year old black UBC student for not having fare because he was waiting for a friend at Rupert station in 2011. And who is the second officer beating him too? *news links posted below* \nTo this\, we respond with a very clear FUCK THE POLICE. \nThe situation with the translink system is becoming increasingly hostile for all people\, particular those that are poor and of a visible minority. The compass turnstiles prevent the movement of people that cannot afford tickets\, which prevents them from seeking employment\, education\, or living a regular life. If those that literally can not afford $2.75\, how can it be expected for them to pay $173? And if that fine is not paid\, it prevents the person from driving as ICBC is involved in the fine process. \nThis event is taking place on occupied and unceded Coast Salish Territories.

SUMMARY:Rally to Defend the Metrotown Demovictions Occupation!
DESCRIPTION:With the dawn of day three of our occupation\, our political demands have not changed\, but the character of our action has. What began as a protest coordinated with other housing actions has become a space of community resistance\, growth\, and survival. The tent we set up outside our occupation has become a community gathering place where neighbours come to get information about the demoviction status of the buildings where they live and share and compare stories. The building itself has already become a shelter for homeless people. Two homeless men washed up and slept in rooms of the occupied building during the day yesterday and today. And last night a third homeless man spent the night on the floor of one apartment. He was a previous resident of the occupied building\, and couch surfed regularly with one of the residents demovicted last week. The City of Burnaby claims there are only about thirty homeless people on its streets and refuses money from the Province for a homeless shelter. Our occupation is creating space for the demovicted and displaced. Let’s protect it against threats from police and the city\, and let’s keep up the demands to stop demovictions now! \nFor more information on the Metrotown action (*NOTE new contact numbers!) 778-708-5006 or 778-861-9307 \nOn facebook: stopdisplacement\nAnd regular updates on twitter: @stopdisplacemnt
