SUMMARY:Free Self Defence Training
DESCRIPTION:Learn to give a punch\, take a punch\, block a punch\, and holds. A few hours of technique training followed by some friendly boxing/sparring/wrestling till whenever. \nThis event was created after several discussions with young women/girls in university about the recent sexual assaults as well as a concerning recent surge in fascist activity in so-called Vancouver. This event is free/by donation. \nSnacks and drinks will be provided (will try to get stuff that people with allergies can consume). Boxing gloves are available\, but in very limited supply so bring your own if you can. Wear sneakers and comfortable clothing. \nNo homophobes\, transphobes\, racists\, fascists\, or predators. \n*****************************\nAccessibility Info: The venue is situated on the south side of Blood Alley Square across from several yuppie/gentrifying establishments such as Gringo’s and Meet Gastown. There are several cobblestones\, but there is ramp access and it’s an open space once inside. There are fewer cobblestones to navigate coming from Abbott as opposed to Carrall. The washroom is not fully WC accessible\, the doorway is about 27 inches wide. \nThis event is taking place on occupied and unceded Coast Salish Territories.

SUMMARY:BBQ and Vigil for our lost homes in support of the Demovictions Squat
DESCRIPTION:Thursday July 14 \n5pm onwards through the night \nOutside the Demovictions Squat\, 5025 Imperial Street\, Burnaby \nIf Amacon is successful in obtaining its immediate injunction and removal order then the courts could be ordering police to remove occupiers as early as the afternoon of that same day. We are calling for the community and other partisans of housing justice to come out for an all night vigil for the hundreds of homes that have been lost to demovictions\, and the thousands that will be lost if the Downtown Metrotown plan is passed. The vigil will also be supporting the occupation and bearing witness to any police action against the Demovictions occupiers. \n  \nWe plan this vigil as a family-friendly\, supportive space\, with no arrest risk. We will have music and BBQs on the lawn and encourage you to come and bring food to grill and share with others. While there will be a couple speakers to update and discuss the issues of demoviction\, this is not a rally but a place for supporters to gather and talk and share. Please contact us with any questions or concerns.

SUMMARY:News conference on Demovictions squat injunction
DESCRIPTION:News conference about the results of the Demovictions court injunction hearing \nThursday July 14 \n11am \nOutside the Demovictions Squat\, 5025 Imperial Street\, Burnaby \nAmacon is asking for a court injunction to immediately remove the “trespassers” from the Imperial Street buildings. They claim that they intend to begin hazardous material removal on Monday and plan to demolish the first week of August\, and that the occupation is in the way of their work. We will be arguing against this application and will discuss the terms of our counter-argument at the news conference afterwards.

SUMMARY:Anti-Transit Police Demo
DESCRIPTION:In solidarity with #BLMTO & #BLMvan \nA video was made public in the past week that showed transit police officer Edguardo Diaz Rodriguez beat down a 22-year old black UBC student for not having fare because he was waiting for a friend at Rupert station in 2011. And who is the second officer beating him too? *news links posted below* \nTo this\, we respond with a very clear FUCK THE POLICE. \nThe situation with the translink system is becoming increasingly hostile for all people\, particular those that are poor and of a visible minority. The compass turnstiles prevent the movement of people that cannot afford tickets\, which prevents them from seeking employment\, education\, or living a regular life. If those that literally can not afford $2.75\, how can it be expected for them to pay $173? And if that fine is not paid\, it prevents the person from driving as ICBC is involved in the fine process. \nThis event is taking place on occupied and unceded Coast Salish Territories.

SUMMARY:Rally to Defend the Metrotown Demovictions Occupation!
DESCRIPTION:With the dawn of day three of our occupation\, our political demands have not changed\, but the character of our action has. What began as a protest coordinated with other housing actions has become a space of community resistance\, growth\, and survival. The tent we set up outside our occupation has become a community gathering place where neighbours come to get information about the demoviction status of the buildings where they live and share and compare stories. The building itself has already become a shelter for homeless people. Two homeless men washed up and slept in rooms of the occupied building during the day yesterday and today. And last night a third homeless man spent the night on the floor of one apartment. He was a previous resident of the occupied building\, and couch surfed regularly with one of the residents demovicted last week. The City of Burnaby claims there are only about thirty homeless people on its streets and refuses money from the Province for a homeless shelter. Our occupation is creating space for the demovicted and displaced. Let’s protect it against threats from police and the city\, and let’s keep up the demands to stop demovictions now! \nFor more information on the Metrotown action (*NOTE new contact numbers!) 778-708-5006 or 778-861-9307 \nOn facebook: stopdisplacement\nAnd regular updates on twitter: @stopdisplacemnt

DESCRIPTION:The scenario is that someone-a lucky someone is new to anarchy and has the opportunity to meet individuals representing the possibilities of their dreams.\nOn one side-the wonderer\, the other side a panel of different interpretations of anarchy. The host will ask pertainent questions to the tendencies and hopefully this contribute to diminishing the tendancy of anarcho-vaguism. \nOur dating canidates will be representing: \nAnarcho-syndicalism\nInsurrectionary anarchism\nNihilism/anarchy\nAnarcha-ecofeminism \nPanelists will answer such questions as\, “How does your anarchy inform your day to day life?”\n\n(As much as we would like life to be simple and relatively uncomplex so that language could be more effective\, it is not and individual’s perspectives will overlap and offer such variety as anti-social\, anti-civ\, civil anarchy\, red\, communism\, green and queer perspectives). \nLET’S FLESH OUT SOME IDEAS. \n(tomatoes will not be handed out\, bring your own confetti.) \nAccessibility Info: The venue is situated on the south side of Blood Alley Square. SUMMARY:BLM Vigil: Alton Sterling & Philando Castile
DESCRIPTION:Alton Sterling was murdered in Louisiana by police officers. Philando Castile was murdered in Minnesota by police officers. In 2015\, 102 unarmed Black people were murdered by police officers. Of these deaths\, 10 resulted in a successful trial and 1 officer received jail time. 135 unarmed Black people have been murdered by police so far in 2016. \nSTOP KILLING US. \nWe would like to acknowledge that we have been unable to hold a vigil for every murdered Black body. We cannot keep up. We do not have the resources\, money\, time and emotional strength to gather every time one of us is brutally taken on either side of the colonial border. We want to dedicate everything we do\, including this vigil to every Black life that did not matter to the state\, to the media and to the police. \nThis event\, along with the majority of the organizing done by the Black Lives Matter Vancouver Coalition\, will be taking place on the traditional\, ancestral and unceded territory and homelands of the Musqueam\, Tseil-Watuth and Squamish First Nations. We are very grateful to the Coast Salish people for the knowledge\, kindness and indomitable spirit with which they have taken care of this land for millennia. We also acknowledge and mourn the many murdered and missing Indigenous people at the hands of state violence and police brutality. \nGet educated:\nhttp://www.vox.com/2016/7/6/12105380/alton-sterling-police-shooting-baton-rouge-louisiana\nhttp://www.cbc.ca/news/world/minnesota-police-shooting-1.3668185\nhttp://mappingpoliceviolence.org/unarmed/\nhttps://www.buzzfeed.com/nicholasquah/heres-a-timeline-of-unarmed-black-men-killed-by-police-over?utm_term=.wnAA66qWV#.ojPe88Zj4\nhttp://killedbypolice.net/

SUMMARY:Pinkwashing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:*** This event is taking place on Coast Salish territories\, specifically the territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh\, sel̓íl̓witulh\, and Stó:lō nations.*** \nAbout the workshop:\nWhat is pinkwashing and what does it have to do with Palestine? Let’s talk about it. This workshop will introduce you to the basics of 100+ years of Palestinian struggle against Zionism and Israeli settler colonialism. We will be screening a movie called Pinkwashing Exposed\, made by our friends in Duamish territories (also known as Seattle). After that\, there will be a chance to discuss how Palestinian queers in Palestine are resisting Israeli pinkwashing\, what’s happening here locally\, and what we can all do to end pinkwashing. \nAbout the facilitator:\nFiras is a Palestinian and Syrian settler who lives on Coast Salish territories. They took a course on history of South West Asia and North Africa (SWANA) at school\, and realized that it didn’t reflect any of their history. So they started doing their own research. For over seven years\, they have been researching and reclaiming Palestinian history. They have learned from the work that queer Palestinians are doing back home to resist settler colonialism\, pinkwashing and queer/transphobia. SUMMARY:Day of Action for Housing Justice
DESCRIPTION:March in the Streets!\nRaise Up the Tent Cities!\nOccupy the Condos! \nDemand that governments make affordable\, secure and safe Housing for All a top priority! \nJuly 9: Day of Action for Housing Justice \nThere is a crisis of homelessness\, housing insecurity and displacement in working class & poor communities across the country. The Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU)\, the International League of Peoples Struggle (ILPS) are initiating a day of action in towns and cities across Canada on Saturday July 9 to demand: \nFederal Government: Spend $5 billion per year on non-market housing affordable\, secure and safe housing for the people! Secure this money by cutting $1 billion dollars from each of the military budget\, the prison budget\, police\, immigration enforcement and detention\, and by ending subsidies to Canadian mining companies responsible for plunder and human rights abuses in other countries. \nProvincial Governments: Rescind the new poor laws that criminalize the poor and homeless and replace them with rent control laws to eliminate speculation and profiteering off people’s basic need for housing. \nLocal Governments: Fund housing not police! Use city resources\, including zoning and regulatory frameworks to eliminate real-estate speculation and profiteering and stop displacement of poor communities. \nWe also encourage local organizations and communities to make their own demands linked to local conditions and campaigns. \nIn making this call we recognize the racist and colonial nature of the Canadian State which results in disproportionate homelessness\, housing insecurity and incarceration of Indigenous people. We stand in solidarity with Indigenous struggles for sovereignty\, self-determination and justice across this land. \nIf you would like to participate in the Day of Action either by leading or participating in an action in your area\, contact us at vandu@vandu.org

Wait and see… This one-act won second prize with our 2013 one-act play writing contest. \nA live premiere reading of Virginia Hayden’s play\, Bel Canto – Bel Canto is set in the world of the Opera where an aging tenor is obsessed with his leading role in Giuseppi Verdi’s opera\, Otello. His leading lady – the Soprano who plays Desdemona – does not live up to his expectations of the character. However his real-life lover does: Otello imagines his lover to be the epitome of femininity and virtue – a true Desdemona. But as reality and illusion intertwine\, tragedy approaches. But a tragedy for whom? A tale of passion and gender\, with a twist or two for those who have an interest in things operatic! \nAnd a live reading of an original Patrick Foley’s play\, The Rounder – The Rounder sets a less than enthusiastic\, young by-law enforcement officer against an irascible old bum who just wants to be left alone to sleep and keep dreaming of better times. The only problem is he’s occupying a City bus stop bench in the middle of the day. Into this conflict comes the paragon of an all busybody lady who knows her rights and won’t be satisfied until she gets her own way. Who wins in the end? The answer is a surprise! \nVenues: July 2nd & 3rd at the Local Loft Café\, 295-2083 Alma St. (Kitsilano/ Westside) \nJuly 8th & 9th at Spartacus Books\, 3378 Findlay St. (Cedar Cottage/ Eastside) \nDoors @ 7:00 – Curtain @ 7:30 pm; $10 Dollars at Door or sliding scale donation; No Reservations; Limited Seating – parking available. \nFeaturing artistic performances by: Sally Anderson\, Paul Beckett*\, Davey Calderon\, Lynne Karey-McKenna\, Mirella Gibeau\, Ralston Harris\, Damon Jang\, Mony Konkanala\, Brian Leslie and Olivia Poon as well produced and directed by Jay Hamburger… Costumes by Hillary Kaplan; additional assistance Paul Bjorn\, Roger Howie\, Monty Martin\, Adeline Martin\, Michelle Karey-McKenna\, Sylvan Hamburger\, Scott Broom\, and Atty Gell. \nThree original one-act plays that will give you a boost in your day!
