Join the Young Communist League in our women’s school on how Marxism guides the struggle against patriarchy in today’s world! We will address a variety of topics from feminist theory\, LGBTQ+ struggles\, and gender\, race and imperialism\, all with a Marxist lens. \nThe school will focus on introducing these topics\, and invites discussion and participant involvement. Any level of participation is welcome\, while keeping in mind that male-identified folks are encouraged to practice active listening. Vegetarian breakfast and lunch will be provided\, and folks are welcome to show up anytime. Stick around because the school will be followed by dinner by donation and a social with beverages\, open mic\, music and women’s trivia! Why a women’s school? \nOver many years\, women have been fighting against patriarchal oppression. As Marxists\, we need to question how Patriarchy and Racism are linked to Capitalism and how the oppression of women and racialized peoples became intrinsic components of the capitalist system. As such\, it is important to understand the role of gendered and racialized oppression within the capitalist system\, rather than assuming they are separate from it. The women’s struggle past and present shows us that we must not only push back against the capitalist\, racist patriarchy\, but break it. In fact\, one hundred years ago\, on February 1917\, 50\,000 women poured out of the factories and onto the streets\, sparking the first revolution in Russia that would eventually lead to the downfall of the Tsar and their anti-woman policies. Revolution is possible\, and united women\, racialized\, LGBTQ+ and gender oppressed folks will be at the forefront of this movement. Building a truly intersectional movement and educating ourselves is an essential part of strengthening this movement against capitalism. \nIn her latest interview\, Angela Davis makes a strong point regarding the changes happening under capitalism\, stating: “The left\, as we have known it\, as important as it has been\, cannot remain the same force until it adequately counters these developments. Therefore\, it is important for the left to recognise that the constitution of the global working classes is very different now. In many ways the left is still dealing with this notion of the working classes as male\, or white male\, as in the case of the US. I think feminism\, radical feminism\, radical anti-racist and anti-capitalist feminism helps us to do the reconceptualisation that is necessary in order to produce a left that is more in line with the vast changes that have occurred in the era of global capitalism\, recognising the feminisation of the working class\, the structural shifts in the global economy\, of the fact that some industries are largely populated by women\, industries that rely on reproductive labour\, of care industries\, domestic service\, health care\, etc. It seems to me that in many ways\, unions around the world are not willing to recognise those changes. To organise the unorganised\, at this moment\, is to organise women.” \nLearn to struggle\, struggle to learn. DESCRIPTION:These actions are being organized by people who use drugs\, drug user groups/unions\, harm reduction workers and allies. These voices have been excluded from the overdose response. \nVancouver’s national day of action event will begin at noon 12 pm in Oppenheimer Park on February 21st. \nFor more information or to start an action in your city contact admin@capud.ca \nCanada is in the midst of the worst overdose crisis in its history. Rather than take meaningful actions to prevent needless deaths and further harms to people who use drugs\, the government has instead pushed forward with its war on drugs and harmful policies. It’s time to demand better. On February 21 2017\, a first national day of action will be held across Canada to demand concrete actions to put an end to the war on drugs\, remove barriers to health care\, and implement policies that are informed by real life experiences of people who use drugs and providers. In Africa\, some of the world’s poorest communities sit right beside mines that generate billions of dollars in profit each year. Many of these mines are financed\, in part\, by ordinary people paying taxes\, putting away savings\, making RRSP contributions and paying into pension plans in Canada. But who gets rich off Canadian mines? We Call Them Intruders [takes viewers] on a journey to the sites of Canadian-owned mines in Tanzania and Zambia. Set against a backdrop of local sights and sounds\, we speak with government officials\, community members\, industry and corporate representatives\, mine workers\, independent experts\, and non-profit organizations. Born in Flames is set in a future where after the “Social Democratic War of Liberation”\, a peaceful socialist revolution\, a group of women decide to organize & rebel against sexism\, racism\, and homophobia within the post-revolutionary society. \nJordan Martin is an uprooted Brooklyn based multidisciplinary artist and multi-instrumentalist. Her musical project Daphne often presents as interdisciplinary performance (a combination of poetry\, theatre\, dance\, visuals\, and music). DESCRIPTION:27th Annual Feb 14th Women’s Memorial March \nTuesday Feb 14th\, 2017\nFamily and community members gather in remembrance at 10:30 am ( *** please note earlier start time ***)\nMarch starts at noon from Carnegie (Main and Hastings) \nThe first women’s memorial march was held in 1991 in response to the murder of a Coast Salish woman on Powell Street in Vancouver. Her name is not spoken today out of respect for the wishes of her family. Out of this sense of hopelessness and anger came an annual march on Valentine’s Day to express compassion\, community\, and caring for all women in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside\, Unceded Coast Salish Territories. \nTwenty seven years later\, the women’s memorial march continues to honour the lives of missing and murdered women and all women’s lives lost in the Downtown Eastside. Increasing deaths of many vulnerable women from the DTES still leaves family\, friends\, loved ones\, and community members with an overwhelming sense of grief and loss. Indigenous women disproportionately continue to go missing or be murdered with minimal to no action to address these tragedies or the systemic nature of gendered violence\, poverty\, racism\, or colonialism. \nOn Tuesday Feb 14th 2017\, we will gather at 10:30 am at the Carnegie Community Centre Theatre\, 401 Main Street (corner Hastings\, Vancouver) where family members speak in remembrance. Given space constraints\, we ask the broader public to join us at noon\, when the march takes to the streets and proceeds through the Downtown Eastside\, with stops to commemorate where women were last seen or found; speeches by community activists at Main and Hastings; a healing circle at Oppenheimer Park around 2:30 pm; and finally a community feast at the Japanese Language Hall. \nWe continue to call for a national inquiry that is led by family and community members and that centers our experiences\, need for healing\, and quest for answers\, concrete action\, and meaningful justice. \nThis event is organized and led by women in the DTES because women – especially Indigenous women – face physical\, mental\, emotional\, and spiritual violence on a daily basis. DESCRIPTION:On January 29\, 2017\, a man walked into a mosque in Quebec City and killed six people. This horrifying act happened at a time when we are witnessing anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies from the President of the United States. There is also a small but vocal minority of Canadians arguing that some people are more Canadian than others. We believe that we are at a point in history when those of us who think that our country is better because of diversity need to stand up and be heard. We also want to support our Muslim neighbours during these frightening times\, because they are valuable members of our Chilliwack community. \nThe Canadian Human Rights Act guarantees freedom from discrimination based on race\, national or ethnic origin\, colour\, religion\, age\, gender\, sexual orientation\, marital status\, family status and disability. By living in Canada\, we all agree to accept these principles\, and it is this inclusiveness that makes us Canadian. Beyond that\, the fact that we have different colours of skin\, practice different religions (or no religion) or create different family arrangements is not something to be feared but to be celebrated. There is no archetypal Canadian\, and every person who lives here can say to every other person\, “You belong here.” \nJoin us on Sunday\, February 12 at 2:30 p.m. outside the Chilliwack Museum for a gathering to support our neighbours and celebrate diversity in Chilliwack. Let us remember our teachings and honour those who have been taken from us. \nWe would like to acknowledge that this march takes place on unceded and traditional territories of the Lekwungen communities\, Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations. \n*There will be an information session for anyone wishing to volunteer in various roles on the day of the March at 11am Saturday January 28th\, 2017 in the Chapel at Our Place on Pandora Ave. \n*This year\, from 10 am the chapel room of Our Place (second floor) is available for family members of missing or murdered Indigenous women to gather\, have some quiet time\, and connect before the March begins. Some snacks and drinks will be provided. Please respect the privacy of family members and honour our intention to keep this a closed space. For family members who would like to use this space\, please be aware that the March will be departing from outside of Our Place at 12 pm. \nProceedings of the March: \nGathering: 11am in front of Our Place\, 919 Pandora Ave\nThe March will begin at 12pm with a prayer\, territory acknowledgements and information for marchers (safety\, respectful conduct etc).\nLead by Indigenous women\, youth and 2spirit drummers\, we will proceed down Pandora Ave to Government Street and then on to the Legislature lawn where we will gather to hear speakers\, songs and share food. \nThe March’s organizing collective would like to remind marchers that this is a memorial and asks that conduct be in accordance with this intent. We also ask that:\n-Indigenous women\, girls and 2spirit drummers’ and singers’ place leading the March be respected.\n-That there be no signs carried unless they are memorializing the missing and murdered by their families. Also no pamphleteering of any kind please.\n-That there be no photography during the March without explicit permission of those photographed.
