SUMMARY:Paint-in against Demovictions on mass eviction-day in Metrotown
DESCRIPTION:What: Painting\, music and speeches \nWhen: 4-6pm\, Thursday\, June 30th \nWhere: 6750 Dunblane\, north east corner of Dunblane/Imperial intersection in Metrotown\, Burnaby \nThursday\, June 30th is the eviction day for the tenants of three rental apartment buildings on Imperial Street\, Metrotown. These buildings\, containing 47 affordable rental units\, are the latest to face demolition in the Metrotown area. The over 80 tenants who will be displaced on June 30th add to the hundreds of low-income renters already displaced through demoviction in Metrotown. \nOn the two Dunblane blocks\, just north of Imperial Street where these building are located\, approximately 300 residents have already been demovicted\, and altogether over 700 renters will have been displaced from these two blocks by 2017 if all planned rezoning applications are approved. Burnaby City Council has not reached out to any of the tenants facing displacement and is not planning to build any social housing to replace the units lost. Unless City Hall changes the demoviction policies it seems intent to impose on all renters in Metrotown\, then the housing and displacement crisis facing these Dunblane residents today will eventually affect thousands of Burnaby renters tomorrow. \nJoin us on Thursday\, June 30th for a community paint-in\, music\, and speeches in resistance to the mass demovictions underway in Metrotown. We are gathering on June 30th because it is eviction-day for residents of three buildings on Imperial and Marlborough in Metrotown. They are all being pushed out of their homes\, many to uncertain futures\, for Amacon Development Corporation’s profits with a new condo project. \nAt the “paint-in” community members and anti-demoviction activists will paint one of the demovicted buildings (which is awaiting demolition for a high-rise) with messages in support of the people being displaced and calling for an end to Burnaby’s mass demoviction and displacement policies. SUMMARY:Protest Against Education Austerity
DESCRIPTION:We are organizing a rally against austerity towards students! \nThe BC ministry of education has put the Vancouver School Board through dozens of budget shortfalls in the past and quite recently. The VSB is exploring the possibilities of closing up to 19-21 schools\, mainly on Vancouver’s East Side: a place where the working-class\, urban First Nations\, and immigrants are concentrated. School closures were recommended by consulting firm Ernst and Young\, acting on behalf of the Liberal provincial government\, as part of an “asset rationalization approach” to manage the VSB’s finances. The provincial government has continually reduced funding for public education\, and has previously asked the VSB to close schools before the board goes ahead with seismic upgrades. The school closures would mean that by 2030\, up to 5\,167 fewer seats would be available in Vancouver’s schools. The “Long Range Facilities Plan” \, which proposes school closures and came as a result of Ernst and Young’s report\, has been tentatively adopted by the VSB and will become final\, after some public consultation\, by June 30th. \nWhat the BC Student Alliance intends on doing is organizing a rally on the private property of the VSB at 1:00PM on the deadline of the Budget proposals (June 30)\, to stand in solidarity with all the marginalized students that are not being heard by the ministries bureaucracy. It will be similar to the “Rally for Education” organized on May 28th but with not only high schoolers speaking. We will have teachers and university students alike speaking about confronting austerity in whatever form it takes on. \nMore details on this event will be posted shortly.

DESCRIPTION:We will be showing the film Radio Alice at 7pm. \nRadio Alice was an Italian free radio broadcasting from Bologna at the end of the 1970s. It started transmitting on 9 February 1976 using an ex-military transmitter on a frequency of 100.6 MHz. The station was closed by the carabinieri on 12 March 1977. Radio Alice then re-opened again for two years and became politically aligned with the autonomism movement. After closure\, the frequency was then given by the state to Radio Radicale. Radio Alice’s output covered a myriad of subjects: labor protests\, poetry\, yoga lessons\, political analysis\, love declarations\, cooking recipes\, Jefferson Airplane\, Area or Beethoven music. Participants in the station included Franco “Bifo” Berardi\, Maurizio Torrealta\, Filippo Scòzzari and Paolo Ricci. In 2002 some former staff members participated in the founding of Orfeo TV\, the first Telestreet pirate TV. \nAccessibility Info: The venue is situated on the south side of Blood Alley Square. There are several cobblestones\, but there is ramp access and it’s an open space once inside. There are fewer cobblestones to navigate coming from Abbott as opposed to Carrall. The washroom is not fully WC accessible\, the doorway is about 27 inches wide.

Previously\, Teresa’s artistic expression was discouraged and ridiculed. \nHer opening poem\, ‘I Am Alive’\, packs added punch when you know that her future was written off a few years ago when she lived in Ontario. In 2013\, Teresa was forced into an Ontario nursing home against her will. The Ontario health-care system had wrapped her in—as disability advocate Paul Young aptly describes it —“a cocoon of impossibility”. Against her wishes\, Teresa’s liberty and freedom was traded for a single bed in an end-of-life nursing home. It was a violation of her human rights. She did not want to be there. Teresa had things to do\, places to go\, and people to meet! \nIn the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver\, Teresa has found her voice. It is a voice that talks about feeling “butterflies”\, but still finds the courage to fly. Meanwhile\, the BC Liberal government is taking that tent city back to court for a second attempt at an injunction to use police to scatter homeless people out of public view rather than out of homelessness. \nActivists from West to East are converging on BC’s capital to press the Minster’s conference for action to end homelessness\, not manage or displace it. Join us to send a loud and strong message to the Ministersthat they must stop the displacement of Super InTent City and end homelessness now. We will meet at the fountain beside the hotel where the Ministers are meeting\, then make our way to the hotel. \nDEMANDS: \n1. Stop the displacement of Super InTent City! Tent Cities are places of safety\, survival\, and resistance against anti-homeless bigotry and police movealongs. They should be ended only by building enough housing and ending anti-poor laws and ideas that make them necessary. We demand that the government stop criminalizing and displacing the homeless\, and that the BC Liberals cancel the injunction and displacement threat against Super InTent City in Victoria. \n2. End homelessness now! We call on federal and provincial governments to build 78\,000 units of social housing at welfare/pension rates every year in Canada until homelessness is ended. We calculate that we need 10\,000 units of social housing every year in British Columbia to end homelessness\, and BC has 13% of the population of Canada. Despite claims to the contrary\, the Federal budget for housing is primarily directed towards shelters\, support staff\, renovation and maintenance of existing housing\, and market subsidies. It will not end the housing crisis on Indigenous reserves or the homelessness crisis in cities and town across Canada. Super InTent City residents and other homeless communities in British Columbia have rejected shelters and institutionalizing “supportive” housing project and we join them in demanding that governments build the homes we need now! \nORGANIZERS: This action is supported by an ad hoc coalition of groups including Alliance Against Displacement\, Carnegie Community Action Project\, Homes Not Hate\, Pivot Legal Society\, and Together Against Poverty Society. \n***This event is being held on the traditional and current territories of the Lekwungen people. Dispossession and displacement go hand in hand. Tent Cities are places of safety\, survival\, and resistance against anti-homeless bigotry and police movealongs. They should be ended only by building enough housing and ending anti-poor laws and ideas that make them necessary. We demand that the government stop criminalizing and displacing the homeless\, and that the BC Liberals cancel the injunction and displacement threat against Super InTent City in Victoria. \n2. End homelessness now! We call on federal and provincial governments to build 78\,000 units of social housing at welfare/pension rates every year in Canada until homelessness is ended. We calculate that we need 10\,000 units of social housing every year in British Columbia to end homelessness\, and BC has 13% of the population of Canada. Despite claims to the contrary\, the Federal budget for housing is primarily directed towards shelters\, support staff\, renovation and maintenance of existing housing\, and market subsidies. It will not end the housing crisis on Indigenous reserves or the homelessness crisis in cities and town across Canada. Super InTent City residents and other homeless communities in British Columbia have rejected shelters and institutionalizing “supportive” housing project and we join them in demanding that governments build the homes we need now! \n\nGetting there from the Mainland \nFor those of us not on Vancouver Island\, getting to the convergence is a bit difficult. Marjane Satrapi grew up in a family of revolutionaries opposed to the Shah’s regime and then the Islamic government which took power in 1979. Persepolis literally illustrates her feelings and thoughts as a little girl\, following her as fundamentalist control in Iran becomes more strict. When her parents insist she leave the country\, we see her struggling to deal with adolescence and missing her beloved family; when she returns\, she has to cope with the increasing repression of her freedoms as a woman. Persepolis beautifully balances both the historic and personal issues and pulls the threads together into a compelling narrative\, made a bit quirky by the style of presentation\, resulting in work that is altogether touching. DESCRIPTION:In celebration of her time as VPL’s 2016 Aboriginal Storyteller in Residence\, Renae Morriseau brings together a group of writers and artists to consider what reconciliation means to artists. \nArtists are the backbone of philosophical discussions within societies\, challenging communities to think forward\, backward\, and in the present. When the Truth and Reconciliation Commission put forward the 94 recommendations to federal government and to Canadians\, artists were left to wonder how that affects them within their communities. What does reconciliation mean to an artist living in unceded territories of the Salish peoples? Join us for an evening with the Aboriginal Writers Collective and special guests to discover “The Art of Reconciliation.” \nWriter and Artist Showcase\n\n\n\n\nGregory Coyes\, filmmaker and musician\nGregory Coyes is widely recognized around the world for his animations with Norval Morrisseau and his award-winning documentary films. Coyes is also a guitar player and songwriter steeped in Métis tradition\, and has been writing and playing his own tunes since 2000.\n\n\n\nMonica Mabel Benson\, dancer\nMonica Mabel Benson is from the Wikwemikong unceded territory on Manitoulin Island. Benson has more than four decades of experience as a traditional dancer and will draw on this in her performance of UNYA.\n\n\n\nGloria May Eshkibok\, actor\, singer\, writer and producer\nGloria May Eshkibok is from the Wikwemikong unceded territory on Manitoulin Island. Currently residing on the Capilano unceded territory of the Squamish Nation\, Eshkibok has been an actress\, singer\, writer and producer for more than 30 years.\n\n\n\nMimi Gellman\, visual artist and educator\nMimi Gellman is an Anishinaabe-Ashkenazi visual artist and educator with a multi-streamed practice in architectural glass and conceptual installation. She is currently an associate professor at Emily Carr University of Art and Design and is completing her research praxis PhD in cultural studies on the metaphysics of indigenous mapping.\n\n\n\nHiromi Goto\, writer\nHiromi Goto is a Japanese-Canadian writer who lives on the traditional unceded territories of the Coast Salish\, the Musqueam\, Squamish and the Tsleil Waututh peoples. She has published numerous books for both adults and youth and was the 2007 Vancouver Public Library writer in residence. Goto is currently working on graphic novels\, short stories and essays.\n\n\n\nGarry Gottfriedson\, author\nA nationally and internationally renowned author\, Garry Gottfriedson has published nine books and toured across North America\, Europe and Asia. A local author from Kamloops\, B.C.\, Gottfriedson is also a self-employed rancher from the Secwepemc Nation.\n\n\n\nHeather Hay\, cellist\nHeather has played an active part in Vancouver’s music scene. She is currently an assistant principal cellist with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra\, and was a member of the CBC Radio Orchestra. Hay’s musical talents have been featured with the West Coast Chamber Music\, Turning Point Ensemble and Vancouver New Music\, and  is also frequently heard on CBC Radio 2.\n\n\n\nJónína Kirton\, poet\nA prairie-born Métis-Icelandic poet and facilitator\,  Jónína Kirton currently lives in the unceded territory of the Coast Salish people. Her first collection of poetry\, page as bone ~ ink as blood\, has been described by Canadian Métis writer Joanne Arnott as “restorative\, intimate poetry\, drawing down ancestral ideas into the current moment’s breath.”\n\n\n\nJules Koostachin\, writer\, producer and actor\nJules Koostachin is from the Mushkegowok territory of the Attawapiskat First Nation and currently resides in Vancouver\, where her company\, VisJuelles Productions Inc.\, has a number of television and film projects in development. Over the years\, she has worked in the indigenous community in several capacities\, providing support to indigenous women and children who face barriers. These community experiences continue to feed her art.\n\n\n\nM’Girl\, music group\nM’Girl is a ensemble of indigenous women with a collective of stories and song about water ways\, the strength of the four-legged\, the winged ones and the gifts received from Mother Earth. Their percussive-based aboriginal hand drum songs blend harmonies into a contemporary\, gospel style that reflects both their expertise of voice and their personal story of home.\n\n\n\nTannis Nielsen\, artist\nTannis Nielsen is a Métis woman\, artist\, mother and lecturer in the visual arts program at UBC’s Okanagan campus. Her artistic and academic interests include anti-colonial theory\, decolonization methodologies\, natural law\, indigenous governance\, indigenous arts activism and the relative visual investigations of indigenous science and quantum physics.\n\n\n\nLarry Nicholson\, poet\nLarry Nicholson is Nehiyaw (Cree) and has made the Coast Salish territory his home for 18 years. It is his deep wish that all people use their hearts and minds to work toward healing and authentic reconciliation for everybody. Nicholson is glad to be joining others in breathing new life into the poetry and words spoken at this special event.\n\n\n\nKat Norris\, writer\nKat Norris is Coast Salish from the Lyackson First Nation on her mother’s side\, and Nez Perce-Hawaiian Filipina on her father’s side. Norris is a residential school survivor of the Kuper Island residential school\, and finds solace in putting thoughts to paper by writing and drawing. Published work include “Crow Bones” in the Salish Seas Anthology.\n\n\n\nKelly Roulette\, writer and artist\nKelly Roulette is an Ojibway writer and artist from Manitoba. A former lawyer and graduate of The SFU Writer’s Studio\, Roulette is a member of the West Coast Aboriginal Writers Collective and Ink Tank writing group\, and has participated in a number of public group readings in Vancouver.\n\n\n\nSherryl Sewepagaham\, musician\nSherryl Sewepagaham is a Cree-Dene traditional hand drummer and singer-songwriter from Alberta. She released a solo album\, Splashing the Water Loudly\, of Cree drum songs infused with jazz piano and Cuban percussion\, and was nominated for a 2015 Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Award for best indigenous language or francophone album.\n\n\n\nMichelle Sylliboy\, poet and photographer\nBorn in Boston\, Massachusetts\, Michelle Sylliboy is a Mi’kmaq artist who was raised in her traditional Mi’kmaq territory of We’koqmaq First Nation in Cape Breton. She is currently completing her doctorate degree in philosophy\, with a focus on curriculum and implementation. Her educational pursuits are aimed at creating language revitalization dialogues and shifting perceptions of what language represents.\n\n\n\nRussell Wallace\, composer\, producer and traditional Lil’wat singer\nRussell Wallace’s music has been part of a number of film\, video and television soundtracks\, and theatre and dance productions. He was the composer in residence for the Chinook Winds Aboriginal Dance Program at the Banff Centre for the Arts from 1996 to 2003. He has also produced albums that have been nominated for awards at the Juno Awards and the Native American Music Awards in the U.S. Wallace is currently a teacher at the Native Education College in Vancouver.\n\n\n\nRita Wong\, poet\nRita Wong is the author of several published works such as monkeypuzzle\,forage\, sybil unrest (with Larissa Lai) and undercurrent. Her book forage was the winner of the 2008 Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize and Canada Reads Poetry in 2011. Wong is also an associate professor at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design on the unceded Coast Salish territories also known as Vancouver.\n\n\n\nCease Wyss\, inter-disciplinary artist\nCease is a media artist with almost 25 years experience. She has produced various formats of media art and is a mentor in her field. Wyss is an ethno-botanist\, traditionally trained by indigenous elders. Her work involves site-specific and culturally focused teaching with storytelling as her means to share knowledge.\n\n\n\n
