SUMMARY:The Elders Say We Don’t Visit Anymore
DESCRIPTION:The Elders Say We Don’t Visit Anymore\nTea\, Bannock and Conversation \nBased on his work with Indigenous youth and elders across Turtle Island\, Wiisaakodewini (Métis) artist Dylan Miner has begun to explore the ‘methodology of visiting\,’ an Indigenous way of working. While conducting an oral history project with retired Anishinaabe autoworkers\, elders shared the idea that “we don’t visit as much as we used to”. Because of urbanization and the necessities of wage labour\, not to mention the effects of settler­ colonialism\, many Indigenous people do not visit one another as frequently. \nIn response\, Miner wondered what it would mean to simply create a time and place to share tea and conversation within the context of the art gallery\, museum\, or Indigenous community centre. It is here that ‘The Elders Say We Don’t Visit Anymore’ emerges. Through this particular socially engaged artist practice\, Miner organizes a tea time where people can stop by to share tea and conversation\, creating and maintaining existing social relationships. Those interested in spending time together\, sharing tea and conversation\, can stop by Gallery Gachet from 1­pm tp 3pm on Saturday\, June 18th and tba in August. \nDylan Miner is a Wiisaakodewinini (Métis) educator\, writer\, historian\, and curator\, as well as an artist working in multiple media. Presently\, Miner is Director of American Indian and Indigenous Studies at Michigan State University\, as well as Associate Professor in the university’s Residential College in the Arts and Humanities. A widely published scholar\, Miner is a founding member of Justseeds\, a graphic arts collective. He earned his PhD from The University of New Mexico and currently lives in East Lansing\, Michigan with his wife\, Dr. Estrella Torrez\, and their two daughters. \nThis event is held in conjunction with an upcoming exhibition\, opening August 5th and running to August 28th. Using traditional plants as a starting point to think about and through community health\, this ongoing project investigates Indigenous medicines and other forms of earth­based and non­Western knowledge and healing. A discussion of the root causes of homophobia\, transphobia\, and sexism\, and the struggle for liberation. \nJane has been active in the LGBTQ movement in Vancouver. During Jane’s first term as an elected Vancouver School Trustee\, she played a key role in the development and implementation of the Vancouver School Board’s policy on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. As a member of Egale Canada’s Education Committee\, she contributes to developing safer school policy across Canada. In 2014\, as a member of the BC Safer School Coalition she supported the updating and strengthening of the VSB SOGI policy. Jane has also been active in feminist\, anti-racist\, and anti-poverty organizing.

This was the second time that line 9 was allegedly shut down after the line was reversed in the direction of flow. \nThe next court appearance for the three is on June 14th\, to set a date for trial. DESCRIPTION:We invite you to celebrate the launch of Thursdays Writing Collective’s eighth anthology of creative writing! \nWe spent a year thinking and writing about food in conjunction with Vancouver Poet Laureate Rachel Rose’s community-broadening mandate. Our project\, SUSTAIN AND NOURISH\, allowed us to question beliefs about food\, notions of food safety and politics\, ideas of what constitutes a healthy community\, what ingredients contribute to our identities. The year of writings that boiled down into the poems\, essays\, memoirs and recipes that make up THE MENU create a delicious and intense meal. \nCome hear selections from THE MENU read by the DTES residents who wrote them. Rachel Rose will be in attendance and we will have lots of delicious (free) food. We will be reading State and Revolution by V.I Lenin. It describes the role of the State in society\, the necessity of proletarian revolution\, and the theoretic inadequacies of social democracy in achieving revolutionary change in society that gives power to the working class/proletariat. \nThis bi-weekly Marxist Reading Group is put on by The Young Communist League-Vancouver at the Centre for Socialist Education. For the first session\, we read Marx. SUMMARY:QTBIPoC Healing Space
DESCRIPTION:> THE LAND \nThis event\, along with the majority of the organizing done by the Black Lives Matter Vancouver Coalition and other organizers\, will be taking place on the traditional\, ancestral and unceded territory and homelands of the Musqueam\, Squamish\, Tsleil-Waututh and Stolo First Nations. We invite our communities to join us in solidarity with Indigenous peoples across and beyond Turtle Island in naming and engaging with the realities of colonial violence\, which as we witnessed on June 12th\, is inseparable from anti-latinx\, anti-black and anti-queer and anti-trans violence. We are grateful to the Coast Salish people for the knowledge\, kindness and indomitable spirit with which they have taken care of this land for millennia and will continue to work in solidarity with their work at this\, and in future events. \n> THE EVENT \nOn June 12th\, a devastating attack took place in Orlando\, Florida. The event was a violent attack on the LGBTQ+ community. The attack took many from the Latinx\, Afro-Latinx and Black communities\, yet this has largely been ignored by mainstream media\, and sadly by much of the LGBTQ+ community here in Vancouver. \nWe would like to hold this space to heal and connect as queer and trans people of colour\, and uplift decolonial ways of loving and nurturing our communities in these hard times. Let’s come together to grieve\, love and heal. \nThis is space being held exclusively for Black\, Latinx\, Indigenous\, Muslim\, and other people of colour whose identities fall on the intersections of being queer\, trans\, two-spirit or elsewhere on the LGBTQ+ spectrum (QTBIPOC). \nThe space and organizing will prioritise those from the Latinx\, Black\, Indigenous and Muslim communities and ensure a safer space for them. However\, all QTBIPOC are welcome. \nIn remembrance to those who passed during the attack\, the space will contain an altares de muertos put together by our latinx organizers. Decorated with traditional papel picado\, candles\, flores de cempazuchitl (marigolds)\, sugar skulls and the picture of those who lost their lives\, any further offerings of flowers and candles will be welcome. The organizers are conscious that altares are traditionally exclusive to Day of the Dead\, but given the impact this attack has had on the Latinx and Afro-Latinx communities in Orlando\, this feels like an appropriate way to celebrate both the lives and identities of those who are no longer with us. \nIndigenous folks are invited to bring drums\, songs\, or other medicines they wish to contribute to the healing space. \nThere will also be space for quiet reflection\, prayer\, meditation\, art supplies etc. Light refreshments will be available for those needing to break their Ramadan fasts. DESCRIPTION:Plant Walk with T’uy’tanat\, Cease Wyss\nThursday\, June 16th\, 11am -­ 3pm \nPlease join us for an afternoon as we immerse ourselves in Stanley Park plantlife with knowledge keeper and interdisciplinary artist\, Cease Wyss. \nThe urban environment is rich with plants. By learning about plantlife and their traditional and medicinal uses\, Indigenous knowledge becomes a way to remap the city. Cease leads this interactive walk through Stanley Park: “Everywhere I go in the city I find plantlife. I find it growing up through the cracks of the sidewalks. I see it growing out of the sides of buildings. I see it in the community gardens. The language of plants is extensive. It carries on even beyond our abilities as humans to even imagine\, because they are the second oldest beings on the planet. \nThey are our teachers. They tell us what they are good for. They tell us in their shapes\, they tell us in their colours and in their textures. You become more insightful about your bodies when you learn more about the medicines growing around you.” \nWe will leave promptly from Gallery Gachet at 11am and travel together by bus. She shares her traditional knowledge of plants that can be found throughout the streets and everyday spaces of Vancouver\, reminding us that the medicines are all around us in our urbanized environments. \nThis event is held in conjunction with an upcoming exhibition\, opening August 5th and running to August 28th. Using traditional plants as a starting point to think about and through community health\, this ongoing project investigates Indigenous medicines and other forms of earth­based and non­Western knowledge and healing. Over the summer Wiisaakodewini (Métis) artist\, Dylan Miner\, will work with community members in the Downtown Eastside as part of this socially-engaged project and resulting exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:The theft and commodification of resources through settler-colonial occupation underlays every aspect of Canada’s wealth. Under 21st Century austerity governing policies that cut taxes for the rich to cut social programs for the poor\, that wealth is increasingly concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer super rich\, while more and more low-income working class and Indigenous people are pushed into the streets. But is the solution to this problem simply to redistribute that stolen wealth downwards? Can we imagine struggles against displacement and poverty also lining up behind Indigenous-led struggles against colonial dispossession? \nOn the weekend of June 11 and 12\, delegates from communities throughout the Fraser Valley and southern Vancouver Island will gather in Vancouver to learn from each other and build a stronger fightback against poverty\, homelessness\, and the displacement crisis. SUMMARY:Gentrification and disappearing low-income retail
DESCRIPTION:Come to a CCAP Town Hall to talk about the growing number of “zones of exclusion” in the Downtown Eastside and about what makes a store or a service low-income friendly. CCAP will try to collect your thoughts\, identify and map all the low income stores (existing and lost) and make recommendations to the city about how to stop gentrification and save the existing shops that cater to the low-income community. To make it a bit more fun\, we will also be voting on which retail stores are the most affordable and friendly if you are low-income! \nThe townhall will be translated into Cantonese.\nTea\, coffee and snacks will be provided. \nBACKGROUND \nAs wealthier people move into the neighborhood\, more spaces are devoted to offering amenities that cater to them. Grocery stores\, banks\, coffee shops\, restaurants\, salons\, various retail stores\, night clubs\, stylish pubs\, etc. begin to appear throughout the neighborhood\, and are priced beyond what people on fixed low income can afford. These sites become zones of exclusion. \nAt the same time\, retail that caters to the low-income community are priced out\, upscaled or closed down. Survival street vendors are harassed\, criminalized and pushed out of the neighbourhood. As gentrification destroys low-income spaces and produces more and more zones of exclusion\, low-income residents become alienated from their own community. It is the experience of internal displacement – the feeling of being out of place in one’s own neighborhood. \nThe town hall will be taking place on the unceded coast salish territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Wauthuth) and Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) peoples.

Much of Ward’s work involves using old forms in new and unexpected ways. \nThe full cost of the workshop is $40.00\, and includes bookmaking supplies.
