SUMMARY:We Call Them Intruders
DESCRIPTION:FRIDAY\, FEBRUARY 17\, 2017 \n4:45 pm: We Call Them Intruders www.wecallthemintruders.wordpress.com \nSpecial Guests and Keynote Speakers: Tamara Herman and Susi Porter-Bopp\, Co-directors\, We Call Them Intruders \n“This century’s global scramble for metals and minerals has led hundreds of Canadian mining corporations to Africa in search of the next big mine find. In Africa\, some of the world’s poorest communities sit right beside mines that generate billions of dollars in profit each year. Many of these mines are financed\, in part\, by ordinary people paying taxes\, putting away savings\, making RRSP contributions and paying into pension plans in Canada. But who gets rich off Canadian mines? We Call Them Intruders [takes viewers] on a journey to the sites of Canadian-owned mines in Tanzania and Zambia. Set against a backdrop of local sights and sounds\, we speak with government officials\, community members\, industry and corporate representatives\, mine workers\, independent experts\, and non-profit organizations. We find that the situation is more complicated than we first imagined.” This event is $5 and includes a panel discussion/Q&A.

SUMMARY:DTES Annual Women's Memorial March
DESCRIPTION:27th Annual Feb 14th Women’s Memorial March \nTuesday Feb 14th\, 2017\nFamily and community members gather in remembrance at 10:30 am ( *** please note earlier start time ***)\nMarch starts at noon from Carnegie (Main and Hastings) \nThe first women’s memorial march was held in 1991 in response to the murder of a Coast Salish woman on Powell Street in Vancouver. Her name is not spoken today out of respect for the wishes of her family. Out of this sense of hopelessness and anger came an annual march on Valentine’s Day to express compassion\, community\, and caring for all women in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside\, Unceded Coast Salish Territories. \nTwenty seven years later\, the women’s memorial march continues to honour the lives of missing and murdered women and all women’s lives lost in the Downtown Eastside. Increasing deaths of many vulnerable women from the DTES still leaves family\, friends\, loved ones\, and community members with an overwhelming sense of grief and loss. Indigenous women disproportionately continue to go missing or be murdered with minimal to no action to address these tragedies or the systemic nature of gendered violence\, poverty\, racism\, or colonialism. \nOn Tuesday Feb 14th 2017\, we will gather at 10:30 am at the Carnegie Community Centre Theatre\, 401 Main Street (corner Hastings\, Vancouver) where family members speak in remembrance. Given space constraints\, we ask the broader public to join us at noon\, when the march takes to the streets and proceeds through the Downtown Eastside\, with stops to commemorate where women were last seen or found; speeches by community activists at Main and Hastings; a healing circle at Oppenheimer Park around 2:30 pm; and finally a community feast at the Japanese Language Hall. \nWe continue to call for a national inquiry that is led by family and community members and that centers our experiences\, need for healing\, and quest for answers\, concrete action\, and meaningful justice. \nThis event is organized and led by women in the DTES because women – especially Indigenous women – face physical\, mental\, emotional\, and spiritual violence on a daily basis. The February 14th Women’s Memorial March is an opportunity to come together to grieve the loss of our beloved sisters\, remember the women who are still missing\, and to dedicate ourselves to justice. \n* SUPPORT THE WOMEN’S MEMORIAL MARCH \nThere are many ways to support the Feb 14th Women’s Memorial March: \n1) ATTEND: Spread the word and join us (all genders welcome) to the Feb 14th march. We respectfully ask that you please do not bring your agency or group banners\, flags\, or leaflets as the Women’s Memorial March carries five banners only to honour the women. Sign honouring womens lives are welcome. \n2) PLAN: Plan a memorial march in your community. Last year\, memorial marches were held in approximately twenty other cities and communities. Please email us the details at hwalia8@gmail.com so we can maintain communication\, compile the information on our website\, and build strength in our coordinated efforts. \n3) DONATE: Please donate. The February 14th Women’s Memorial March is made possible by organizations and individuals like you. Please make cheques payable to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre\, and include Feb 14th Women’s Memorial March on the memo line. Mail cheques to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre\, 302 Columbia St. Vancouver\, BC V6A 4J1. All donations over $10 will be gratefully acknowledged with a tax deductible receipt. \nThank you all for your support and commitment\,\nFeb 14th Women’s Memorial March Committee \nWebsite: https://womensmemorialmarch.wordpress.com/\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/womensmemorialmarch/

SUMMARY:You Belong Here
DESCRIPTION:On January 29\, 2017\, a man walked into a mosque in Quebec City and killed six people. This horrifying act happened at a time when we are witnessing anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies from the President of the United States. There is also a small but vocal minority of Canadians arguing that some people are more Canadian than others. We believe that we are at a point in history when those of us who think that our country is better because of diversity need to stand up and be heard. We also want to support our Muslim neighbours during these frightening times\, because they are valuable members of our Chilliwack community. \nThe Canadian Human Rights Act guarantees freedom from discrimination based on race\, national or ethnic origin\, colour\, religion\, age\, gender\, sexual orientation\, marital status\, family status and disability. By living in Canada\, we all agree to accept these principles\, and it is this inclusiveness that makes us Canadian. Beyond that\, the fact that we have different colours of skin\, practice different religions (or no religion) or create different family arrangements is not something to be feared but to be celebrated. There is no archetypal Canadian\, and every person who lives here can say to every other person\, “You belong here.” \nJoin us on Sunday\, February 12 at 2:30 p.m. outside the Chilliwack Museum for a gathering to support our neighbours and celebrate diversity in Chilliwack. We encourage you to bring signs with the “You Belong Here” message. Here is a link to the official logo\, which you are free to print out and use:\nColour: bit.ly/2khz6oz\nBlack and white: https://goo.gl/95Ff2z \nAlthough it is supposed to warm up to 8 degrees by the weekend\, we think people will be more comfortable listening to our list of speakers indoors. Therefore\, after a brief introductory message\, we will walk over to the Vineyard Community Centre at 45892 Wellington Ave. There\, the list of speakers will be as follows: \nEddie Gardner\, Sto:lo Nation\nWillow Reichelt\, You Belong Here Organizing Committee\nDr. Osama Ebesh and Faizal Kadir\, Chilliwack Islamic Centre\nVern and Susan Tompke\, Vineyard Community Church\nJason Lum\, City Council \nAfter the speakers\, everyone is invited to enjoy a hot beverage and spend time introducing yourself to your neighbours. \nWe want to create a slideshow video that includes Chilliwack residents from as many demographics as possible holding You Belong Here signs. We will have a photo booth for this purpose set up at the event\, and you can also post photos to the event page. You may also want to take a group photo to show your family or organization’s support for this project. \nPlease share this event and encourage others to attend. \nWe look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

SUMMARY:We Stand with Standing Rock! Emergency IntersAction!
DESCRIPTION:WE STAND WITH STANDING ROCK! Emergency IntersACTION \nAs we continue to organize against Trudeau’s approval of the Kinder Morgan pipeline\, we also need to respond to an urgent call to action from those on the frontlines in Standing Rock fighting against the Dakota Access pipeline. \nTrump has already called for the pipeline to be built\, and there are significant efforts underway to force the granting of the final easement to allow the pipeline drilling to be completed without an Environmental Impact Statement. \nPolice also continue to harass and attack water protectors\, with over 70 recently arrested and charged with “rioting” and other offences for setting up another camp to oppose the pipeline. \nThere has been a call for solidarity actions\, which Climate Convergence is responding to by organizing an Emergency IntersAction at Georgia and Howe in downtown Vancouver. This is a very visible intersection where the main Vancouver branch of the TD Bank is located – one of the major investors in the Dakota Access pipeline. \nWe ask everyone to join us in standing in solidarity with indigenous nations asserting their right to self-determination and defending everyone from these unnecessary and dangerous projects which are literally destroying the planet. \nWe Stand with Standing Rock!\nMni Wiconi – Water is Sacred!\nNo Pipelines on Stolen Native Lands!\nNo to Dakota Access\, Kinder Morgan\, Line 3 and Keystone XL Pipelines! \nWe acknowledge we are on the traditional\, unceded\, occupied territories of the Coast Sallish peoples: the mi ce:p kʷətxʷiləm (Tsleil-Waututh)\, Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. \nWhat is an IntersAction?\nIt’s an action where we flood an intersection on all sides with people crossing (on the light) with signs and banners without stopping the flow of traffic. This way we can be seen by and engage with the most people.

SUMMARY:Cop Rock (USA\, 1990)
DESCRIPTION:We noticed that people often arrive late to our films\, and we don’t want anyone to miss out\, so for fun we’re going to start off each A.V. Club screening with a 45-minute episode of the all-singing-all-dancing police prodedural drama that aired for 11 episodes in 1990 before its brutal cancellation. Join your favourite civil servants as they sing and dance their way through the American justice system\, from the officer-involved shooting of an unarmed African-American to the sale of a baby on the black market! Come by at 7 sharp for an episode\, and then stay for a feature film every second and fourth Thursday of the month.

SUMMARY:The Great Dictator (USA\, 1940)
DESCRIPTION:As World War II raged on in Europe\, many in the U.S. still refused to take Hitler’s rise seriously. Charles Chaplin was among those who did. Chaplin takes on the dual role of dictator Adenoid Hynkel and a poor\, Jewish barber who wants to see an end to bigotry and hatred. While Chaplin deftly ridiculed his contemporaries with all his characteristic wit as a mime\, for this film he finally broke his silence with a monologue that decades later has not lost its urgency. \nEpisode 3 of Cop Rock begins at 7 p.m.\nThe Great Dictator begins at 8 p.m.

SUMMARY:Fixed Term Lease Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Landlords throughout Metro Vancouver are increasingly exploiting a loophole in the Residential Tenancy Act by getting tenants to unknowingly sign Fixed Term Tenancy Leases\, making it easier for them to evict tenants without proper due process and raise the rents above the yearly maximum. A sharp rent increase or eviction has devastating effects for all of us\, but especially severe impacts on low-income folks who as a result may become homeless. We must join in solidarity and fight for tenant rights! \nThe DTES SRO Collaborative and The Carnegie Community Action Project invite you to join us and fight back! \nWhere: Carnegie Community Centre Theatre \nWhen: Wednesday\, February 8th @ 6:30 PM \nWhat: \nLearn your rights! \nLearn what you are signing in a lease agreement! \nLearn how to respond to an expolitative landlord and seek justice! \nHelp us lobby to close the Fixed Term Tenancy loophole in the RTA! \nCoffee and Snacks will be provided\nWheelchair Accessible\nASL (pending)

SUMMARY:Vancouver Housing Crisis Roundtable (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:We acknowledge that this event is taking place on the ancestral\, traditional\, unceded and occupied Indigenous territories of the Coast Salish Peoples\, and in particular\, the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) peoples. The xʷməθkʷəy̓əm territory on which UBC Point Grey campus is located is unceded\, that is\, it was never surrendered\, relinquished\, or handed over by xʷməθkʷəy̓əm to Canada or British Columbia through a treaty or other means; it is sovereign and unsurendered. \n“Vancouver Housing Crisis: Voices from the Community” is the third event in a series of roundtables on the “Face of Modern Capitalism” that will be happening this year. The purpose of this roundtable is to gain a greater understanding for how issues of capitalism (housing unaffordability\, gentrification and displacement\, real estate development\, neoliberalism\, globalization)\, racism (growing anti-Chinese\, anti-immigration sentiments\, racial scapegoating\, gentrification of Chinatown)\, and settler colonialism (living on the unceded Indigenous territories\, land dispossession\, gentrification of DTES and displacement of Indigenous peoples) interact and overlap with one another in the context of Vancouver’s housing crisis. \nTo RSVP\, please sign up here (event is free and open to the general public): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/vancouver-housing-crisis-roundtable-part-2-tickets-31477607371 \nPanelists:\n1) Natalie Knight (Alliance Against Displacement)\n2) Sophie Fung (Chinatown Action Group)\n3) Cicely-Belle Blain (Black Lives Matter and Qmunity)\n4) Audrey Siegl (Musqueam First Nation)\n5) David Eby (NDP MLA)\n6) Wilson Munoz (Coalition of Progressive Electors) \nQuestions:\n1) What are the underlying causes of the housing crisis in Vancouver? What kind of role do global flows of capital play? What are the short-term and long-term consequences? Who gets affected the most by growing unaffordability? How does Canada’s history as a settler colonial white capitalist nation shape conversations about Vancouver housing crisis and specifically foreign investment debate? \n2) How do anti-Asian racism and Canadian whiteness play out in conversations about “wealthy Chinese immigrants”? What can we learn from the foreign investment debate about whose bodies are welcome in Canada? What is the history of Asian immigration to BC? How have the crisis and the surrounding discourses affected Chinese-Canadians and other migrant communities in Vancouver? What are the effects and consequences of development and gentrification in Chinatown? \n3) How can we discuss housing affordability issues while living on the unceded Coast Salish territories? How has the housing crisis affected Indigenous people in Vancouver? Do the public discourses about the housing crisis undermine and ignore Indigenous rights and titles to the unceded territories? Are Indigenous people being displaced from the city once again? How can we decolonize housing affordability issues in Vancouver? \n4) Should affordable housing be a human right? If so\, whose responsibility is it to provide affordable housing? What should the role of government be concerning the growing economic polarisation? What needs to be done to create affordable housing for residents? How have your communities been dealing with the growing unaffordability? What are your community’s housing needs and how can they be addressed? \nFormat: The discussion will be facilitated by Mark Harris (UBC GRSJ) who will be asking the panel open-ended questions (listed above) and allowing panelists to answer individually\, as well as to comment on each other’s answers. In the end\, we will leave some time for questions from the audience. Light refreshments will be provided at the event. \nLocation: UBC Vancouver\, Henry Angus building\, room 968 \nOrganizers: This event is organized with the support of UBC Social Justice Centre and Dr. David Silver. \n“Vancouver Housing Crisis (Part 1)” happened on November 23\, 2016 and has focused on the voices of academics. SUMMARY:Have some beans and raise a stink about welfare rates!
DESCRIPTION:Have some beans and raise a stink about welfare rates! \nWhat: Picket Christy Clark’s $1000 a plate dinner\nWhen: 5pm\, Tuesday\, February 7th at 1015 Burrard St. \nTravel and Signmaking: You can also meet us at 3.30pm at the CCAP office (on second floor of Carnegie). We will bus together to 1015 Burrard St. at 4.15pm sharp. \nThe Liberals don’t care about people on welfare. The BC government provides $610 a month in welfare to a single person\, without a recognized disability\, who is expected to look for work. It has been at this level since April 2007\, when they raised the shelter component of welfare by $50 for singles. This means that once rent and other essentials are paid for\, a person on welfare has $76 left to spend on food for a whole month and only $18 (at most) to spend on food each week. \nCome protest the abysmally low welfare rates in BC at a Christy Clark VIP fundraising event at the Burrard St. Steakhouse on February 7th. You can go as a VIP if you have $1000 or you can be a mere non VIP and just pay $300. CCAP and Raise the Rates will picket the event and serve beans outside\, the only food people on welfare can afford.

SUMMARY:Stand Against The Ban
DESCRIPTION:We acknowledge that this event\, our organizing\, words and beings occurs on the occupied\, traditional\, ancestral\, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples – specifically the sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations.\nWe also acknowledge that acts of systemic colonization against indigenous folks are currently taking place in an ongoing manner within institutions\, power structures and language use. We must partake in recognizing our positions and complicity in settler colonialism on these stolen ancestral lands. \nThis group is made for the purpose of planning a protest as a form of action against the hateful immigrant/refugee/Muslim ban in America that is targeting folks who hold dual- citizenship within these countries (& hold\, greencards\, visas\, have permanent residency within the States): Iran\,Iraq\,Sudan\,Somalia\,Syria\,Yemen & Libya…. or simply are refugees from these areas.\nThis is targeting racialized bodies whose backs imperial & colonial states were forcibly built on.\nWe are angered & heartbroken about this ongoing form of colonial\, racist violence enacted by white supremacy & border imperialism. \nCalling on Trudeau to condemn the ban and open Canada as a place for those who have nowhere to go\, and to the American government to immediately put an end to this horrific policy.\nWe have bled enough. NO TO HATRED. \nWe are in full support of this National movementhttps://www.facebook.com/events/407436779648169/ \nWe align ourselves with these demands initiated by Black Lives Matter – Toronto : \n“OUR DEMANDS \n1) The Canadian government must make an immediate public condemnation of the executive order by President Trump that bans Muslim visa-holders from seven countries and also bans all refugees from entering the US. \n2) Canada must immediately open the Canada-USA border. \nThis includes revocation of the Safe Third Country Agreement which bars most refugee claimants entering from the United States over land to claim asylum in Canada. The Designated Country of Origin list\, which makes it almost impossible for US citizens and citizens of forty other countries to claim asylum in Canada\, must be eliminated. \n3) Canada must end racist\, anti-refugee\, anti-Black\, Islamophobic exclusion of migrants and refugees within this colonial border. \nThis includes ending the system of indefinite immigration detention. The federal government must create a regularization program so that all undocumented residents can live here with their families rather than fear mass deportation. Migrant workers in Canada must also be given permanent status and open work permits. We want real\, not symbolic\, Sanctuaries that guarantee access to services and refuse collaboration with Canadian and American border agents. \n4) Canada must rescind all federal legislation that attacks racialized Black and Brown Muslims and refugees\, including the Zero Tolerance for Barbaric Cultural Practices Act as well as anti-terror legislation such as Security Certificates and Bill C51. \nStatement initiated by Black Lives Matter – Toronto \nWith the support of:\nAnti-Fascist Action Calgary\nBlack Lives Matter -Vancouver\nCoalition Against Bigotry – Pacific\nIdle No More\nJusticia for Migrant Workers\nKashmir Solidarity Group – Toronto\nNo One Is Illegal – London\, Ontario\nNo One Is Illegal – Toronto\nNo One Is Illegal -Vancouver Coast Salish territories\nPeople for Peace – London\, Ontario\nRefugees Welcome – victoria/lekwungen territory Victoria\nSalaam -Vancouver: Queer Muslim Community\nSiraat Muslim Collective – Vancouver\nTamil Freedom Coalition\nToronto Street Medics\nTrikone – Vancouver”

SUMMARY:Legacy of Arthur Manuel
DESCRIPTION:HONOURING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF ARTHUR MANUEL \nMonday January 30th at 6 pm\n1803 East 1st Ave (just east of Commercial Drive). \n*********************** \nOn Wednesday January 11\, renowned Indigenous rights activist Arthur Manuel made his journey to the spirit world \nArthur\, a residential school survivor\, was the son of Marceline Paul of the Ktuanaxa Nation and George Manuel of the Secwepemc Nation. Arthur was a pillar in the Indigenous resistance movement\, known around the world for his tireless advocacy for Indigenous Peoples’ right to self-determination. \nComing up as a young leader in the 1970s\, he served as president of the National Native Youth Association\, leading the occupation of Indian Affairs. He returned to his community and was elected Chief of Neskonlith Indian Band\, Chair of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council\, and Chair of the Assembly of First Nations Delgamuukw Implementation Strategic Committee. He was a long-time co-chair of the North American Indigenous Peoples Caucus of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. He was active in the Defenders of the Land and Idle No More movement and as a board member of the Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples. \nMost recently he was co-author of the award-winning book Unsettling Canada: A National Wake-Up Call. He worked selflessly in defence of Indigenous territorial authority and opposed any termination of Indigenous land rights. He rejected provincial and federal authority over unceded Indigenous land\, and challenged the extinguishment of Indigenous title through the BC treaty process. He fought climate change\, battling the imminent threat of pipelines including Kinder Morgan across Secwepemc territory. \nIn his most recent article on Canada’s 150th celebration\, published only a week before his death\, Arthur insisted yet again that Canada was built entirely on the theft of Indigenous lands: \n“Our Indian reserves are only .02% of Canada’s land and yet Indigenous peoples are expected to survive on them. This has led to the systematic impoverishment of Indigenous people and the crippling oppression that indigenous peoples suffer under the current colonial system. The .02 land based is used to keep us too poor and too weak to fight back. It is used to bribe and co-opt the Indigenous leadership into becoming neocolonial partners to treat the symptom of poverty on Indian reserves without addressing the root cause of the problem\, which is the dispossession of all of the Indigenous territory by Canada and the provinces.” – Arthur Manuel in First Nations Strategic Bulletin\, August-December 2016 Issue \n*************** \nthis event takes place on unceded xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and Səl̓ílwəta/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) territories. \nAccessibility info: the entrance at street level gives access to washrooms\, kitchen and lower hall. One washroom has a stall that can accommodate a wheelchair. The washroom door opening is 86 cm\, and the stall door is 61 cm.

SUMMARY:Life of the Party: harm reduction and the fentanyl crisis
DESCRIPTION:Fentanyl is in recreation drugs\, not a Downtown Eastside-specific issue. It is a drug-related problem generally and everyone can be affected and impacted by this. \nJoin us for the next part in the Capilano Students’ Union’s #adulting series with a workshop on harm reduction strategies. When you’re at a party and your friend goes down\, what do you do? You have seconds to act. Come learn what you need to know when someone overdoses. You will also learn about available drug testing and overdose kits. \nStacey Forrester\, who works for the Portland Hotel Society which runs the Insite safe injection site\, will be presenting a workshop focusing on harm reduction as it applies to young people and nightlife — at concerts\, bars\, or parties. She goes into some very specific strategies for safer use of substances often seen in those settings: alcohol\, MDMA\, cocaine (for example not sharing rolled money/straws when snorting drugs to reduce the risk of blood borne disease). She places a focus on the fact that fentanyl has made its way into substances that the user isn’t expecting so EVERYONE (even folks who don’t use) should be aware danger signs to watch out for to help intervene if something does go south. \nShe also does a Narcan Demo\, discusses basic emergency safety techniques (including rescue breathing and recovery position)\, and reinforces that it is not illegal to be on drugs\, so please don’t be afraid to call 911. She will talk about anti-oppressive ways to talk about drugs and addiction. Strategies to support people having a “bad trip”. \nShe will also go into bystander intervention strategies when you see someone perhaps being predatory in a sexual way/harassing/being a creep at a party\, substances\, and consent. Also\, will provide resources to learn more about substances\, addiction\, where to get trained in Narcan etc. \nSnacks & beverages will be provided to attendees. \nThe CSU strives to provide full\, fair\, and equal participant access to all CSU activities\, campaigns\, and services. SUMMARY:We stand behind Jose at the Federal Court of Appeal
DESCRIPTION:On January 30\, 2017\, the Federal Court of Appeal will hold the hearing of the Appeal of J. Brown’s decision to refuse an extension of time to file a motion for reconsideration of an interlocutory judgement dated December 21\, 2015. This was concerning an application for the issuance of a certificate by the Minister of Public Safety stating that the name Jose Luis Figueroa is not listed in the list of entities of Canada. \nUnder Subsection 83.07(2) of the Criminal Code of Canada\, the Minister of Public Safety has the legal obligation to issue a certificate within 15 days after receiving an application\, if he or she is satisfied that the Applicant is not a listed entity. The Minister has repeatedly disregarded his legal obligation and the issuance of the certificate has been in litigation for almost two years. \nJoin in support of Jose at the Federal Court of Appeal on January 30\, 2017\, starting at 2:00 pm. The hearing is scheduled to last no more than 1 1/2 hours. Your attendance will give so much moral support!

SUMMARY:Organizing Against the Savior Mentality - Vancouver
DESCRIPTION:How can people with privilege step up their organizing against patriarchy and white supremacy? A conversation and book release event featuring author and organizer Naava Smolash a.k.a. Nora Samaran\, organizer Kai Rajala and journalist Jordan Flaherty. \nBIOS:\nNaava Smolash is a faculty member in the English department at Douglas College and has been a community organizer in Vancouver and Montreal for over fifteen years. She holds a PhD from Simon Fraser University focused on race theory\, and is the author of “The Opposite of Rape Culture is Nurturance Culture” and academic and popular articles. Her current organizing work focusses on antiracism in white communities. \nKai Rajala is a founding member of Gays Against Gentrification (GAG) and has been organizing in social justice communities on the Downtown Eastside for several years. Their current work and analysis is focused on highlighting and disrupting gay complicity within neoliberal structures. They are also particularly interested in interrogating the assemblage of hypermasculine white and middle-class saviour complexes in social service and grassroots spaces. \nJordan Flaherty is an award-winning journalist\, producer\, and author. His print journalism has been featured in publications from the New York Times to Colorlines\, as well as in seven anthologies. He has been a guest on shows from Anderson Cooper 360 to Democracy Now\, and he has produced television documentaries and news reports for Al Jazeera America\, Al Jazeera English\, and The Laura Flanders Show. He was the first journalist to bring the case of the Jena Six to a national audience\, he played himself on HBO’s television series Treme\, and he was a target of the New York City Police Department’s spying programs. He is the author of the new book No More Heroes: Grassroots Responses to the Savior Mentality. \nMore about No More Heroes: Grassroots Responses to the Savior Mentality: \nFrom the Crusades to Black Lives Matter\, No More Heroes is a grassroots history of resistance to the savior mentality. The book weaves the stories of teachers\, international volunteers\, sex workers\, FBI informants\, indigenous organizers\, and prison abolitionists into a narrative of revolutionary change that travels from Alaska to Palestine\, from Karl Marx to Muhammad Ali\, and from KONY 2012 to the Red Cross. \nNo More Heroes brings us real life stories of life-or-death conflict: Riad Hamad\, a Lebanese middle school teacher in Texas betrayed by FBI informant Brandon Darby. Monica Jones\, a Black transgender sex work activist arrested for “walking while trans” in Phoenix\, Arizona. Haidar Eid\, a professor resisting colonialism and liberalism in his daily life and work in Gaza City. Sophie Lucido Johnson\, a recent college graduate who finds her youthful idealism channeled by others to displace unionized African American teachers in New Orleans. \nNo More Heroes explores the growing response to these dynamics: grassroots and street-based uprisings like the Arab Spring\, Occupy Wall Street\, and Black Lives Matter\, creating accountable movements focused on real\, systemic change. \n“From systemic racism to climate change\, there are no easy fixes to the deep- rooted crises of our time. In this marvelous\, enormously instructive book\, Jordan Flaherty explores how we too often allow the struggle for change to be undermined by would-be saviors—and how today’s grassroots social movements\, led by communities on the frontlines of crisis\, are charting a far more powerful path forward.”\n– Naomi Klein\, Author\, This Changes Everything and The Shock Doctrine \n“No More Heroes exposes the savior complex for what it really is: imperialism camouflaged as a rescue operation. A perfect gift for the age of Trump.”\n-Robin D. G. Kelley\, Author\, Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination \n“Buy this book if you believe a better world is possible and want to know how to get there. From Jordan Flaherty\, the journalist that broke the story of The Jena Six\, comes this thrilling people’s history of current movements for revolutionary change. A powerful\, engaging\, exciting book for anyone concerned about the state of the world.”\n-Cynthia McKinney\, 2008 Green Party Presidential Candidate; former Georgia Congresswoman
