DESCRIPTION:We acknowledge that this event\, our organizing\, words and beings occurs on the occupied\, traditional\, ancestral\, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples – specifically the sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations.\nWe also acknowledge that acts of systemic colonization against indigenous folks are currently taking place in an ongoing manner within institutions\, power structures and language use. We must partake in recognizing our positions and complicity in settler colonialism on these stolen ancestral lands. \nThis group is made for the purpose of planning a protest as a form of action against the hateful immigrant/refugee/Muslim ban in America that is targeting folks who hold dual- citizenship within these countries (& hold\, greencards\, visas\, have permanent residency within the States): Iran\,Iraq\,Sudan\,Somalia\,Syria\,Yemen & Libya…. or simply are refugees from these areas.\nThis is targeting racialized bodies whose backs imperial & colonial states were forcibly built on.\nWe are angered & heartbroken about this ongoing form of colonial\, racist violence enacted by white supremacy & border imperialism. \nCalling on Trudeau to condemn the ban and open Canada as a place for those who have nowhere to go\, and to the American government to immediately put an end to this horrific policy.\nWe have bled enough. NO TO HATRED. \nWe are in full support of this National movementhttps://www.facebook.com/events/407436779648169/ \nWe align ourselves with these demands initiated by Black Lives Matter – Toronto : \n“OUR DEMANDS \n1) The Canadian government must make an immediate public condemnation of the executive order by President Trump that bans Muslim visa-holders from seven countries and also bans all refugees from entering the US. \n2) Canada must immediately open the Canada-USA border. \nThis includes revocation of the Safe Third Country Agreement which bars most refugee claimants entering from the United States over land to claim asylum in Canada. The Designated Country of Origin list\, which makes it almost impossible for US citizens and citizens of forty other countries to claim asylum in Canada\, must be eliminated. \n3) Canada must end racist\, anti-refugee\, anti-Black\, Islamophobic exclusion of migrants and refugees within this colonial border. \nThis includes ending the system of indefinite immigration detention. The federal government must create a regularization program so that all undocumented residents can live here with their families rather than fear mass deportation. Migrant workers in Canada must also be given permanent status and open work permits. DESCRIPTION:HONOURING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF ARTHUR MANUEL \nMonday January 30th at 6 pm\n1803 East 1st Ave (just east of Commercial Drive). \n*********************** \nOn Wednesday January 11\, renowned Indigenous rights activist Arthur Manuel made his journey to the spirit world \nArthur\, a residential school survivor\, was the son of Marceline Paul of the Ktuanaxa Nation and George Manuel of the Secwepemc Nation. Arthur was a pillar in the Indigenous resistance movement\, known around the world for his tireless advocacy for Indigenous Peoples’ right to self-determination. \nComing up as a young leader in the 1970s\, he served as president of the National Native Youth Association\, leading the occupation of Indian Affairs. He returned to his community and was elected Chief of Neskonlith Indian Band\, Chair of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council\, and Chair of the Assembly of First Nations Delgamuukw Implementation Strategic Committee. He was a long-time co-chair of the North American Indigenous Peoples Caucus of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. He was active in the Defenders of the Land and Idle No More movement and as a board member of the Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples. \nMost recently he was co-author of the award-winning book Unsettling Canada: A National Wake-Up Call. He worked selflessly in defence of Indigenous territorial authority and opposed any termination of Indigenous land rights. He rejected provincial and federal authority over unceded Indigenous land\, and challenged the extinguishment of Indigenous title through the BC treaty process. He fought climate change\, battling the imminent threat of pipelines including Kinder Morgan across Secwepemc territory. \nIn his most recent article on Canada’s 150th celebration\, published only a week before his death\, Arthur insisted yet again that Canada was built entirely on the theft of Indigenous lands: \n“Our Indian reserves are only .02% of Canada’s land and yet Indigenous peoples are expected to survive on them. This has led to the systematic impoverishment of Indigenous people and the crippling oppression that indigenous peoples suffer under the current colonial system. The .02 land based is used to keep us too poor and too weak to fight back. SUMMARY:Life of the Party: harm reduction and the fentanyl crisis
DESCRIPTION:Fentanyl is in recreation drugs\, not a Downtown Eastside-specific issue. It is a drug-related problem generally and everyone can be affected and impacted by this. \nJoin us for the next part in the Capilano Students’ Union’s #adulting series with a workshop on harm reduction strategies. When you’re at a party and your friend goes down\, what do you do? You have seconds to act. Come learn what you need to know when someone overdoses. You will also learn about available drug testing and overdose kits. \nStacey Forrester\, who works for the Portland Hotel Society which runs the Insite safe injection site\, will be presenting a workshop focusing on harm reduction as it applies to young people and nightlife — at concerts\, bars\, or parties. She goes into some very specific strategies for safer use of substances often seen in those settings: alcohol\, MDMA\, cocaine (for example not sharing rolled money/straws when snorting drugs to reduce the risk of blood borne disease). She places a focus on the fact that fentanyl has made its way into substances that the user isn’t expecting so EVERYONE (even folks who don’t use) should be aware danger signs to watch out for to help intervene if something does go south. \nShe also does a Narcan Demo\, discusses basic emergency safety techniques (including rescue breathing and recovery position)\, and reinforces that it is not illegal to be on drugs\, so please don’t be afraid to call 911. She will talk about anti-oppressive ways to talk about drugs and addiction. Strategies to support people having a “bad trip”. \nShe will also go into bystander intervention strategies when you see someone perhaps being predatory in a sexual way/harassing/being a creep at a party\, substances\, and consent. Also\, will provide resources to learn more about substances\, addiction\, where to get trained in Narcan etc. \nSnacks & beverages will be provided to attendees. \nThe CSU strives to provide full\, fair\, and equal participant access to all CSU activities\, campaigns\, and services. DESCRIPTION:On January 30\, 2017\, the Federal Court of Appeal will hold the hearing of the Appeal of J. Brown’s decision to refuse an extension of time to file a motion for reconsideration of an interlocutory judgement dated December 21\, 2015. This was concerning an application for the issuance of a certificate by the Minister of Public Safety stating that the name Jose Luis Figueroa is not listed in the list of entities of Canada. \nUnder Subsection 83.07(2) of the Criminal Code of Canada\, the Minister of Public Safety has the legal obligation to issue a certificate within 15 days after receiving an application\, if he or she is satisfied that the Applicant is not a listed entity. The Minister has repeatedly disregarded his legal obligation and the issuance of the certificate has been in litigation for almost two years. \nJoin in support of Jose at the Federal Court of Appeal on January 30\, 2017\, starting at 2:00 pm. DESCRIPTION:A rally to protest fascist posters in New Westminster will be held at Hyack Square on 8th and Columbia across from the New West Skytrain Station. Several neo-Nazi posters\, as shown above\, were discovered at a New Westminster bus stop on the morning of Saturday\, January 21st. \nThe literature was spotted around 6th Street and 4th Avenue and featured the web address of a site that calls themselves the online headquarters for “Global Fascist Fraternity” and bears the slogan “Gas the k****\, race war now\, 1488 boots on the ground!” \nTwo different posters were noticed\, one saying “The key for a new Canada” with the image of a swastika and the other depicting Nazi soldiers confronting men with machine guns\, saying “It’s always going to be us vs. them. Join us before they stomp.” \n“They have now crossed the Fraser River\,” says Coalition Against Bigotry organizer Imtiaz Popat. Neo-Nazi literature has been circulating in Abbotsford\, Chilliwack\, Mission and Richmond since October of last year. \nThis event is hosted on occupied\, unceded Coast Salish Territories.

DESCRIPTION:How can people with privilege step up their organizing against patriarchy and white supremacy? A conversation and book release event featuring author and organizer Naava Smolash a.k.a. Nora Samaran\, organizer Kai Rajala and journalist Jordan Flaherty. \nBIOS:\nNaava Smolash is a faculty member in the English department at Douglas College and has been a community organizer in Vancouver and Montreal for over fifteen years. She holds a PhD from Simon Fraser University focused on race theory\, and is the author of “The Opposite of Rape Culture is Nurturance Culture” and academic and popular articles. Her current organizing work focusses on antiracism in white communities. \nKai Rajala is a founding member of Gays Against Gentrification (GAG) and has been organizing in social justice communities on the Downtown Eastside for several years. Their current work and analysis is focused on highlighting and disrupting gay complicity within neoliberal structures. They are also particularly interested in interrogating the assemblage of hypermasculine white and middle-class saviour complexes in social service and grassroots spaces. \nJordan Flaherty is an award-winning journalist\, producer\, and author. His print journalism has been featured in publications from the New York Times to Colorlines\, as well as in seven anthologies. He has been a guest on shows from Anderson Cooper 360 to Democracy Now\, and he has produced television documentaries and news reports for Al Jazeera America\, Al Jazeera English\, and The Laura Flanders Show. He was the first journalist to bring the case of the Jena Six to a national audience\, he played himself on HBO’s television series Treme\, and he was a target of the New York City Police Department’s spying programs. DESCRIPTION:Victoria PD has asked Victoria City Council to add $240\,000 to the $52 million/year police budget\, to embed 2 more officers in ACT mental health teams. ACT clients have not been asked if this is something they want or how it will affect their safety and access to mental health services. \nAn ad hoc coalition is encouraging people to write letters and attend the Council meeting to speak out against cops as mental health workers. Cops being part of ACT teams criminalizes people with mental illness\, contributing to stereotypes of people with mental health concerns as dangerous and out of control. We feel that “helping” is incompatible with having the power to surveil\, detain\, arrest\, and forcibly confine people against their will. DESCRIPTION:Carnegie Community Action Project (CCAP) strongly opposes the Council recommendation to open and fund a Community Policing Centre in Strathcona. Buried in the City’s Opioid Crisis Update report going to council on Tuesday is a proposal for $200\,000 of City dollars towards establishing a new Community Policing Centre in the Strathcona neighbourhood and increased funding for the existing Community Policing Centres. \nThere were 215 overdose deaths in Vancouver this year\, with the majority of the them in the Downtown Eastside. In the midst of this tragedy\, it is shameful that the City is planning to use funds set aside to mitigate the fentanyl crisis towards a project aimed to placate property owner fears about the impact of the presence of low-income drug users on their property values. CCAP appeals to community members to speak against the motion at City Hall on Wednesday and to write letters of opposition ahead of the meeting. \n______________________ \nHOW TO TAKE ACTION: \n1) Speak out against the motion at City Hall on Wednesday\, January 25th. The report is scheduled for the council meeting on Tuesday January 24th\, but speakers will most likely be heard during the council meeting 9.30am the next day. To sign up to speak call Laura Kazakoff\, Meeting Coordinator\, at 604.871.6353\, or e-mail laura.kazakoff@vancouver.ca. Each speaker has 5 min to speak. \n2) Write a letter of opposition. Please email a copy of your letter to info@carnegieaction.org. \n______________________ \nWHY WE OPPOSE THE STRATHCONA COMMUNITY POLICING CENTRE: \n1) No bonus police funding in the name of fighting overdoses \nDowntown Eastside is already the most policed neighbourhood in City\, and maybe even in Canada. Since the election of Vision Vancouver in 2008\, the annual police budget has increased by 70% while funding for housing and other social programs have remained stagnant. In the report the community policing centre is being framed as a positive measure that will ensure the livability of the area. But liveable for whom? More police doesn’t help drug users nor does it help to mitigate the fentanyl crisis. \nThe criminalization of low-income illicit drug users is the cause of the overdose crisis because it increases the power of an unregulated\, criminalized drug market\, the destabilization of the community that could otherwise protect itself\, and the desperation of individual users who could otherwise check their drugs. Spending more money on cops will not reverse this trend. Any serious attempt at addressing the fentanyl crisis must work towards the decriminalization of drugs. \nPolice are not good healthcare or social workers. Drug users are targeted and harassed by the police\, and drug users avoid interactions with the police because of the very real fear of arrest and charges. Increased policing and community collaboration with the police will make Strathcona less safe for persons who use drugs\, push them into less visible and less public areas\, and ultimately make them more vulnerable to violence and overdose death. \n2) Stop City support for an anti-drug user moral panic \nThe City’s commitment to open a community policing centre in Strathcona is a concession to Strathcona property and business owners. In October the Strathcona Business Improvement Association (SBIA) and Strathcona Residents Association (SRA) raised concerns that the City and Province didn’t ask their permission before announcing plans for two new supervised injection service facilities near Strathcona. The SBIA cited fears about the “safety” of “Strathcona residents\, customers\, and business owners” resulting from these health services. According to their open letter\, the safety panic were primarily “due to an increase in homelessness and open substance use.” \nThe City proposal to support Strathcona residents and business demands for a community policing centre legitimizes the business and property owner moral panic about the public visibility of low-income drug users. It endorses the idea that homeless people and drug-users are dangerous and\, disturbingly\, it reinforces the stigmatizing myth that middle class people’s safety is actually compromised by low-income people having health facilities blocks away. We oppose the City’s proposal for a Community Policing Centre because it entrenches anti-drug user stereotypes and distracts from the fact that in the midst of a worsening overdoses crisis it is drug users safety and wellbeing that is really at stake. \n3) Support peer-led drug user groups and initiatives\, not cops \nDrug users and drug user groups have been on the frontline of the fentanyl crisis\, and often they are the first people to attend to overdoses. Drug users know best what is going on in the community\, what drugs are going around\, and what supports and services are needed. \nYet\, peer-led groups and initiatives like VANDU are chronically underfunded and the Drug Users Resource Centre just lost its funding. As primarily volunteer organizations\, Drug User peer groups like VANDU and DURC are also the lowest cost and most effective means of intervening directly in the overdose crisis. The $200\,000 set aside for the Strathcona Community Policing centre should be re-directed towards drug user led community groups and initiatives where it can make a difference in stopping the overdose crisis\, rather than to more cop resources\, where it will make the problem worse.

DESCRIPTION:In the light of growing incidents of racist flyers being distributed in Abbotsford\, Radical Desi in partnership with Coalition Against Bigotry is going to hold a rally against racism in the parking lot of the heritage Sikh temple. On January 15 that happens to be the birthday of Martin Luther King\, the supporters of white supremacist group KKK distributed flyers specifically targeting him in the community. We find this extremely offensive and need to raise our voice together against growing tide of bigotry due to divisive politics of populist leaders like Trump in North America. Since the Abbotsford Heritage Sikh temple is a space that was created by our elders to fight back against racism and occupation more than a century ago\, we urge everyone to gather there to send a strong message to the hate groups which are trying to divide us once again. DESCRIPTION:Join us for Climate Convergence’s monthly public forum where the diverse strands of the climate justice movement come together to discuss\, network and strategize. \nThis month we address the question of how the climate justice movement should intervene in the upcoming provincial election. After federal approval of both Kinder Morgan and the Site C dam and with a looming battle at Lelu Island in the mouth of the Skeena River over Petronas’ PNW LNG the stakes are incredibly high. \nWhat can climate justice groups and activists do during the provincial election to put forward clear demands to the parties? How do we link the issues of Kinder Morgan\, Site C\, PNW LNG and green jobs to form a coherent message? Should we advocate for a vote for particular parties that have stronger positions opposing some or all of these projects? How do we use the election to amplify the voice of the climate justice movement? How will we hold the provincial government’s feet to the fire no matter what the outcome? \nThese are some of the burning questions that will be discussed. If you have any accessibility needs for this events\, please email sasc@ams.ubc.ca \nAmber Dawn is a writer living on unceded territory of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations (Vancouver\, Canada). Her memoir How Poetry Saved My Life: A Hustler’s Memoir won the 2013 Vancouver Book Award. She is the author of the Lambda Award-winning novel Sub Rosa\, and editor of the anthologies Fist of the Spider Women: Fear and Queer Desire and With A Rough Tongue. Her newest book Where the words and my body begins is a collection of glosa form poems. She currently teaches creative writing at Douglas College and the University of British Columbia\, as well as volunteer mentors at several community-driven art and healing spaces. \nCreative Self-Care is intended for anyone interested in using creative writing for personal reflection and self-care. \nThrough a series of guided writing prompts and voluntary peer-to-peer discussion\, workshop participants will explore potent overlaps between the personal and the creative. \nThematically\, the exercises will encourage participants to write about personal strengths and values\, choice and desire\, and personal memory and past events. This is a process-based workshop—meaning there are no “right or wrong” ways to approach the exercises\, and no pressure on the outcomes of the writing. SUMMARY:Shades of Resistance: Healing Through Art
DESCRIPTION:This event will take place on the unceded\, ancestral and occupied territory of the the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam people). The everyday violence enacted against black\, indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC) is inseparable from the broader violence of settler colonization\, displacement and white supremacy that enable the occupation of this land by UBC and the Canadian state. This event is a part of Sexual Assault Awareness month and is an evening of storytelling and community care that centers this reality and survivors of racialized violence in all its forms. \nThe narratives we have available of sexualized and gender-based violence\, survival\, and resistance are often white and westernized. They cannot hold space for the depth of intergenerational trauma\, the history of movement across lands and language\, or the complexities of genders that cross borders but do not cross cultures that are held in BIPOC bodies and communities. \nWe invite you to join us in holding space for this depth and for each other; for those in our communities who are survivors of violence; whose stories too often go untold and unnamed. This will be an evening of healing and hard truths\, but also an evening of celebration and honouring of the resilience of our communities in surviving generations of violence. \nWhite folks attending in support of those they are in community with are welcome. We do ask that folks accessing the event to be mindful of the intention of this space\, and that the venue has a capacity.
