SUMMARY:No Cops On Outreach
DESCRIPTION:Victoria PD has asked Victoria City Council to add $240\,000 to the $52 million/year police budget\, to embed 2 more officers in ACT mental health teams. ACT clients have not been asked if this is something they want or how it will affect their safety and access to mental health services. \nAn ad hoc coalition is encouraging people to write letters and attend the Council meeting to speak out against cops as mental health workers. Cops being part of ACT teams criminalizes people with mental illness\, contributing to stereotypes of people with mental health concerns as dangerous and out of control. We feel that “helping” is incompatible with having the power to surveil\, detain\, arrest\, and forcibly confine people against their will. Additionally the building where ACT teams are located is the proposed location for a supervised consumption site\, so more cops will make it less safe for people to access those much needed services.#NoCopsOnOutreach! \nTo speak at the Council meeting\, this form needs to be completed before 11 AM Wednesday January 25: http://www.victoria.ca/cityhall/council-address-form.aspx \nTo write letters to Council: mayor@victoria.ca; malto@victoria.ca; ccoleman@victoria.ca; bisitt@victoria.ca; jloveday@victoria.ca; mlucas@victoria.ca; pmadoff@victoria.ca; cthornton-joe@victoria.ca;gyoung@victoria.ca \nand please post here for inspiration! \nThis call for action is the start of a wider campaign that is coming together to defund policing and put that money into REAL solutions to problems in our communities. We believe that real safety comes not from surveillance and criminalization of marginalized people\, but rather building community-based prevention and response strategies. We’re inspired by creative solutions emerging in other communities such as the CAHOOTS mental health crisis response team\, the Audre Lorde Project’s Safe Outside the System prevention/response to anti-LGBTQ violence\, People’s Community Medics\, and many more. \nRecently VicPD released their Mental Health Strategy\, which purports to create gentler police response to mental illness while simultaneously entrenching myths that people with mental illness\, especially those who use drugs and alcohol\, are dangerous and need a police response. Relying on the police ignores the real harms done by police\, promotes the deskilling of our communities in preventing and responding to mental health crisis\, and makes people fearful of coming forward if they need assistance for fear they will be forced to engage with cops. \nOur communities can do better. We look forward to your ideas! \nRelevant VicPD documents:\n* VicPD 2017-18 Provisional Budget: https://vicpd.ca/sites/default/files/board_uploads/Nov%2015%202016%20Provisional%20Budget%20meeting%20PUBLIC_0.pdf\n* VicPD Mental Health Strategy: http://vicpd.ca/mental-health-strategy

SUMMARY:Stop bonus police funding in the name of fighting overdoses
DESCRIPTION:Carnegie Community Action Project (CCAP) strongly opposes the Council recommendation to open and fund a Community Policing Centre in Strathcona. Buried in the City’s Opioid Crisis Update report going to council on Tuesday is a proposal for $200\,000 of City dollars towards establishing a new Community Policing Centre in the Strathcona neighbourhood and increased funding for the existing Community Policing Centres. \nThere were 215 overdose deaths in Vancouver this year\, with the majority of the them in the Downtown Eastside. In the midst of this tragedy\, it is shameful that the City is planning to use funds set aside to mitigate the fentanyl crisis towards a project aimed to placate property owner fears about the impact of the presence of low-income drug users on their property values. CCAP appeals to community members to speak against the motion at City Hall on Wednesday and to write letters of opposition ahead of the meeting. \n______________________ \nHOW TO TAKE ACTION: \n1) Speak out against the motion at City Hall on Wednesday\, January 25th. The report is scheduled for the council meeting on Tuesday January 24th\, but speakers will most likely be heard during the council meeting 9.30am the next day. To sign up to speak call Laura Kazakoff\, Meeting Coordinator\, at 604.871.6353\, or e-mail laura.kazakoff@vancouver.ca. Each speaker has 5 min to speak. \n2) Write a letter of opposition. In addition to speaking at city hall\, or if you are not able to speak in person on Wednesday January 25th\, you can write a letter in opposition to the recommended measure of opening a Community Policing Centre in the Strathcona neighbourhood. \nWe encourage you to base your letter on our points but to use your own words if you can. We know this is very short notice so please feel free to copy our text if you’d like. The three points we would like to emphasize are: 1) No bonus police funding in the name of fighting overdoses; 2) Stop City support for an anti-drug user moral panic\, and; 3) Support peer-led drug-user groups\, not cops. \nLetters can be sent to laura.kazakoff@vancouver.ca as well as mayorandcouncil@vancouver.ca. Please email a copy of your letter to info@carnegieaction.org. \n______________________ \nWHY WE OPPOSE THE STRATHCONA COMMUNITY POLICING CENTRE: \n1) No bonus police funding in the name of fighting overdoses \nDowntown Eastside is already the most policed neighbourhood in City\, and maybe even in Canada. Since the election of Vision Vancouver in 2008\, the annual police budget has increased by 70% while funding for housing and other social programs have remained stagnant. In the report the community policing centre is being framed as a positive measure that will ensure the livability of the area. But liveable for whom? More police doesn’t help drug users nor does it help to mitigate the fentanyl crisis. \nThe criminalization of low-income illicit drug users is the cause of the overdose crisis because it increases the power of an unregulated\, criminalized drug market\, the destabilization of the community that could otherwise protect itself\, and the desperation of individual users who could otherwise check their drugs. Spending more money on cops will not reverse this trend. Any serious attempt at addressing the fentanyl crisis must work towards the decriminalization of drugs. \nPolice are not good healthcare or social workers. Drug users are targeted and harassed by the police\, and drug users avoid interactions with the police because of the very real fear of arrest and charges. Increased policing and community collaboration with the police will make Strathcona less safe for persons who use drugs\, push them into less visible and less public areas\, and ultimately make them more vulnerable to violence and overdose death. \n2) Stop City support for an anti-drug user moral panic \nThe City’s commitment to open a community policing centre in Strathcona is a concession to Strathcona property and business owners. In October the Strathcona Business Improvement Association (SBIA) and Strathcona Residents Association (SRA) raised concerns that the City and Province didn’t ask their permission before announcing plans for two new supervised injection service facilities near Strathcona. The SBIA cited fears about the “safety” of “Strathcona residents\, customers\, and business owners” resulting from these health services. According to their open letter\, the safety panic were primarily “due to an increase in homelessness and open substance use.” \nThe City proposal to support Strathcona residents and business demands for a community policing centre legitimizes the business and property owner moral panic about the public visibility of low-income drug users. It endorses the idea that homeless people and drug-users are dangerous and\, disturbingly\, it reinforces the stigmatizing myth that middle class people’s safety is actually compromised by low-income people having health facilities blocks away. We oppose the City’s proposal for a Community Policing Centre because it entrenches anti-drug user stereotypes and distracts from the fact that in the midst of a worsening overdoses crisis it is drug users safety and wellbeing that is really at stake. \n3) Support peer-led drug user groups and initiatives\, not cops \nDrug users and drug user groups have been on the frontline of the fentanyl crisis\, and often they are the first people to attend to overdoses. Drug users know best what is going on in the community\, what drugs are going around\, and what supports and services are needed. \nYet\, peer-led groups and initiatives like VANDU are chronically underfunded and the Drug Users Resource Centre just lost its funding. As primarily volunteer organizations\, Drug User peer groups like VANDU and DURC are also the lowest cost and most effective means of intervening directly in the overdose crisis. The $200\,000 set aside for the Strathcona Community Policing centre should be re-directed towards drug user led community groups and initiatives where it can make a difference in stopping the overdose crisis\, rather than to more cop resources\, where it will make the problem worse.

SUMMARY:Rally Against Racism and Bigotry
DESCRIPTION:In the light of growing incidents of racist flyers being distributed in Abbotsford\, Radical Desi in partnership with Coalition Against Bigotry is going to hold a rally against racism in the parking lot of the heritage Sikh temple. On January 15 that happens to be the birthday of Martin Luther King\, the supporters of white supremacist group KKK distributed flyers specifically targeting him in the community. We find this extremely offensive and need to raise our voice together against growing tide of bigotry due to divisive politics of populist leaders like Trump in North America. Since the Abbotsford Heritage Sikh temple is a space that was created by our elders to fight back against racism and occupation more than a century ago\, we urge everyone to gather there to send a strong message to the hate groups which are trying to divide us once again. The demonstration will start at 1 pm. We encourage everyone to be there by 12:30 pm so that we can start it on time. For more information call 778 862 2454.

SUMMARY:Women's March on Washington - Vancouver
DESCRIPTION:This is the official home for the Vancouver contingent for the Women’s March on Washington. We’re here to help Canadians\, and Americans in Canada\, who want to march (or meet-up!) in solidarity with the folks in Washington D.C. \nIf you’re interested in helping organize in your area\, please fill out this form: https://goo.gl/forms/W0CdJPybaIlT0yB23 \n**SPIRIT AND ETHOS OF LOCAL MARCHES**\nThis is an INCLUSIVE\, INTERSECTIONAL march\, and EVERYONE\, around the world\, who supports women’s rights are welcome. We are committed to intersectional feminism and inclusion:\n– Women & Girls & Femmes & GNC & GF\n– Men & Boys\n– Families\n– People of Color\n– Immigrants\n– LGBTQI+ Community\n– Individuals with disabilities\n– ALL religious communities\n– Climate Change Advocates\n– Anyone else who wants to come out in support! \nThe purpose of this *non-violent*\, *inclusive* and *intersectional* protest is to take a stand for and support women’s rights — the rights of ALL women — with women from all races\, all religious communities\, all political affiliations\, cis or transgendered and all sexual orientations. Violence\, whether from or against the right-wing\, left-wing\, centre or independents\, is not welcome and will not be condoned. \nThis event was sparked by Trump’s election to the White House and is a response to the hate-inciting\, divisive\, discriminatory attitudes\, messages and actions that have emerged from the Trump campaign and have continued to be perpetuated by his supporters post-election\, in his name. To date\, there is no country in the world that has yet achieved gender equality\, but that does not mean we should give up striving towards it. We will not tolerate any discrimination or victimization of women or any violation of women’s rights\, whether through words\, actions or policies. We will not allow our hard-won rights to be trampled on and we will not be stopped in our pursuit of intersectional\, substantive equality! \n“Equal enough” is NOT enough! \nWe hope to see our brothers\, fathers\, sons\, husbands and other male allies marching with us — women’s rights are human rights! \nThis event is just the beginning. \nPLEASE spread the word everywhere! There are solidarity marches forming across Canada\, so please keep checking back as we get the local events up and running. \nCanadian Contingent going to Washington\, D.C.:https://www.facebook.com/events/1624009594561437/\nVancouver: https://www.facebook.com/events/232724467164012/\nEdmonton: https://www.facebook.com/events/386751131667261/\nWinnipeg: https://www.facebook.com/events/1231305650288949/\nToronto: https://www.facebook.com/events/1887427814819609/\nOttawa: https://www.facebook.com/events/260184234399809/\nMontreal: https://www.facebook.com/events/1711075705872620/\nMoncton: https://www.facebook.com/events/1412774458763259/\nHalifax: https://www.facebook.com/events/1894080487491914/ \nUS Page is here\, with links to other states’ pages:https://www.facebook.com/events/2169332969958991/

SUMMARY:Climate Justice and the BC Election
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Climate Convergence’s monthly public forum where the diverse strands of the climate justice movement come together to discuss\, network and strategize. \nThis month we address the question of how the climate justice movement should intervene in the upcoming provincial election. After federal approval of both Kinder Morgan and the Site C dam and with a looming battle at Lelu Island in the mouth of the Skeena River over Petronas’ PNW LNG the stakes are incredibly high. \nWhat can climate justice groups and activists do during the provincial election to put forward clear demands to the parties? How do we link the issues of Kinder Morgan\, Site C\, PNW LNG and green jobs to form a coherent message? Should we advocate for a vote for particular parties that have stronger positions opposing some or all of these projects? How do we use the election to amplify the voice of the climate justice movement? How will we hold the provincial government’s feet to the fire no matter what the outcome? \nThese are some of the burning questions that will be discussed. We hope you’ll join us and contribute your voice and your ideas to the discussion and debate so we can continue to build a broader and more united climate justice movement to wage the struggles to come. \nUpdates – following the main discussion we’ll have an update from Anjali Appadurai on the Climate Law in Our Hands campaign which is planning a Polluter’s Pay the People action in early March to demand that fossil fuel companies pay for the costs and impacts of climate change on local municipalities in BC. \nAs always we’ll have brief reports on several recent actions that CC has been involved in and announcements on some upcoming actions and events that CC and other climate action groups are planning. Individual groups and activists are welcome to make announcements during this portion at the end of the forum. \n***CHILD CARE: Assistance with on site child care is available with at least 2 to 3 days notice. Please contact Andrew to make a request: aalarigakis@shaw.ca \nWe are also always looking for volunteers willing to help with child care at the meetings. Please let Andrew know if you can help.*** \nACKNOWLEDGEMENT\nThis event takes place on the traditional\, unceded\, occupied territories of the səlil̓wətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.

DESCRIPTION:This event will take place on the unceeded\, traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) peoples. The event is for people of all genders and non conforming folks. The event is wheelchair accessible and asks you to be mindful of using scents. If you have any accessibility needs for this events\, please email sasc@ams.ubc.ca \nAmber Dawn is a writer living on unceded territory of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations (Vancouver\, Canada). Her memoir How Poetry Saved My Life: A Hustler’s Memoir won the 2013 Vancouver Book Award. She is the author of the Lambda Award-winning novel Sub Rosa\, and editor of the anthologies Fist of the Spider Women: Fear and Queer Desire and With A Rough Tongue. This is a process-based workshop—meaning there are no “right or wrong” ways to approach the exercises\, and no pressure on the outcomes of the writing. Sharing is always optional. \nBring your preferred writing tools — paper and pen or a laptop — and a willingness to help create a confidential\, safer environment. \nAs this event has limited capacity\, please email sasc@ams.ubc.ca to register.

SUMMARY:Oppose the 105 Keefer Open House!
DESCRIPTION:Join us and voice your opposition at the City of Vancouver’s Open House for the market development condo proposed at 105 Keefer. Because of the recent onslaught of gentrification and displacement in Chinatown\, our group rejects the current rezoning application put forward by Beedie Living (http://rezoning.vancouver.ca/applications/105keefer/index.htm). \nOur demands are:\n1) No market housing at this site\n2) For all 3 levels of government to acquire the 105 Keefer St. site (https://you.leadnow.ca/petitions/protect-the-heart-of-vancouver-s-chinatown)\n3) 100% social housing at shelter rate or 30% of the OAS income\n4) An intergenerational\, multi use community space\, with an emphasis on seniors. \nWe will also be attending the Chinatown Historic Area Planning Committee meeting on Thursday January 12\, at 5:30pm in Board Room of the Chinese Cultural Centre at 50 East Pender St\, Vancouver\, as they review this application to pressure them to not support this application. The Urban Design Panel will review this application on Wednesday January 11\, at 4:00pm in the Town Hall Meeting Room\, 1st Floor\, City Hall\, 453 West 12th Ave.) \nThis site is in the heart of Chinatown by the memorial remembering the sacrifices of Chinese-Canadian workers and soldiers\, and every unit for market housing further displaces the low income community. We’ve seen how damaging the Historic Area Heights Review (HAHR\, passed in 2011) has ushered in a new era of unaffordable high rises. \nPlease sign and share our petition and stop the Yaletownification of Chinatown! https://you.leadnow.ca/petitions/protect-the-heart-of-vancouver-s-chinatown

SUMMARY:Shades of Resistance: Healing Through Art
DESCRIPTION:This event will take place on the unceded\, ancestral and occupied territory of the the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam people). The everyday violence enacted against black\, indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC) is inseparable from the broader violence of settler colonization\, displacement and white supremacy that enable the occupation of this land by UBC and the Canadian state. This event is a part of Sexual Assault Awareness month and is an evening of storytelling and community care that centers this reality and survivors of racialized violence in all its forms. \nThe narratives we have available of sexualized and gender-based violence\, survival\, and resistance are often white and westernized. They cannot hold space for the depth of intergenerational trauma\, the history of movement across lands and language\, or the complexities of genders that cross borders but do not cross cultures that are held in BIPOC bodies and communities. \nWe invite you to join us in holding space for this depth and for each other; for those in our communities who are survivors of violence; whose stories too often go untold and unnamed. This will be an evening of healing and hard truths\, but also an evening of celebration and honouring of the resilience of our communities in surviving generations of violence. \nWhite folks attending in support of those they are in community with are welcome. We do ask that folks accessing the event to be mindful of the intention of this space\, and that the venue has a capacity. We would like to centre indigenous folks\, black folks and other people of colour\, particularly women\, sex workers\, current and former youth in care\, trans and queer folks\, people living with disabilities\, and other racialized people most affected by sexualized violence. \nEVENT SCHEDULE \n6:00PM – 6:30PM | Doors Open // Light Refreshments\n6:30PM – 6:45PM | Opening Remarks\n6:45PM – 7:15PM | Featured Performances (Set 1)\n7:15PM – 7:25PM | Break\n7:25PM – 7:45PM | Featured Performances (Set 2)\n7:45PM – 8:00PM | Open Mic\n8:00PM – 9:00PM | Communal Dinner \nFEATURED PERFORMERS \n✪ Jaye Simpson \n✪ Molly Billows \n✪ Cicely-Belle Blain \n✪ Yulanda Lui \n✪ Zehra Naqvi \nDINNER\n✪ Basmati Rice (Vegan/GF)\n✪ Naan (Vegan)\n✪ Chana Masala (Vegan/GF)\n✪ Aloo Gobi (Vegan/GF)\n✪ Butter Chicken (Contains Dairy/Meat) \nACCESSIBILITY\nThe Dr. Simon K.Y. Lee Global Lounge & Resource Centre is accessible to wheelchairs and other mobility devices through the East (Main) and West (Rear) street level entrances. There are 2 large gender-inclusive single stall washrooms\, one of which is wheelchair accessible. We ask that folks help us maintain a scent-reduced environment by not wearing fragrances or scents to this event. You can find more information about how to attend scent-reduced spaces here: (http://www.brownstargirl.org/blog/fragrance-free-femme-of-colour-realness-draft-15). \nThere will be a SASC support worker available to be an active listener for the event if you need to check in with someone about anything that comes up for you at the event. The specific support worker will be known closer to the event date; the support worker will be a woman of colour. \nThe venue is accessible from the UBC Bus Loop by shuttle bus via the C20 (http://www.transitdb.ca/route/C20/). This is a free event. \nIf your needs to access this event are not mentioned above\, please contact Ivan at sascoutreach@ams.ubc.ca for more information.

SUMMARY:Decolonize\, Decarbonize! No consent\, No pipelines!
DESCRIPTION:As the Canadian capitalist State enters its national celebration of 150 years of resource exploitation\, expansion and colonization of indigenous lands and peoples\, we will gather on Lekwungen territory during the Spirit of 150 Victoria- First Night festivities to bear witness\, form circle and raise our voices and banners to the systemic injustices and tragedies colonization continues to unload on First Nations communities and individuals\, native ecosystems– and the planet as a whole and to honour the long history of indigenous resistance to colonialism and the current indigenous resurgence as a critical current in the shift toward environmental\, social and economic justice. \nRecent approvals of fracked gas development and tar sands expansion across indigenous lands in so-called British Columbia\, without consent of frontline communities and threatening the Salish Sea coast \, indigenous sovereignty and economies; and global climate are further evidence that Canada is not listening to indigenous peoples and concerned citizens and will meet direct and growing resistance to the Kinder Morgan TMX and other fossil fuel expansion and energy developments in the new year. \nPlease join us at the New Year’s First Night celebrations of 150 years of Canadian colonialism\, to mark a new year in the long fight to decolonize and decarbonize the indigenous territories we all inhabit! \nBring signs\, drums and banners! \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1045657882229712/ \nThe New Year’s for an Oil-Free Salish Sea will follow this event at the beach at the base of Meqan ( Beacon Hill) at 7 pm

SUMMARY:Trans Community Holiday Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Trans community members are warmly welcomed to the Trans Community Holiday Dinner. \nLocation\nThis year\, we will be gathering at Broadway Youth Resource Centre on 2455 Fraser Street (at Broadway). The Squamish\, Tsleil-Waututh\, and Musqueam nations have been gathering and feasting on this land since time immemorial. This is their unceded territory\, and until there is justice for Indigenous people on Turtle Island\, it is important to acknowledge this everytime we gather. We extend a special welcome to Two-Spirit community members to this dinner. \nFood\nVolunteers will be preparing all of the food. If you have food allergies\, sensitivities\, or restrictions\, please let us know in advance by emailing sivits@vcc.ca.\nThe accessibility person (with the orange arm band) will be happy to help you identify foods you can and cannot eat. \nAccessibility\nWe will have an accessibility point person on site wearing an orange arm band. Please approach them with questions\, concerns\, or requests for assistance of any kind. Or just to say hi.\nThis space\, including washrooms\, is wheelchair and scooter accessible.\nThe washrooms will be made gender neutral.\nScents make some of us very sick. Please help us make this a scent-reduced space. Avoid scented body products (shampoos\, lotions\, perfumes). If you paint your nails\, please do so 24 hours in advance.\nNearby bus stops for #99\, 9\, and 7. \nCreating a Safer Space\nThis December\, people are celebrating many holidays\, including Kwanzaa\, Hanukkah\, Yule\, and Christmas. However\, Christmas is the holiday we see everywhere we look. It can feel othering for many of us who don’t celebrate it. At this holiday gathering\, we do not wish to centre Christmas in any way. For this reason\, our decorations will be snowflake and winter animal themed. We won’t play Christmas carols. There will not be a group prayer. This is a really hard time of the year for a lot of us. Let’s all try to make this event feel as welcoming as possible for as many people as possible. \nSome of us use substances to help us get by. Some of us are in recovery. To help everyone feel ok\, please avoid using substances near the entrance/exit. \nWe hope you will join us on Sunday December 18th! Working together to prepare and share a meal is good medicine!

SUMMARY:Discussion: Burnaby Mountain 2.0?
DESCRIPTION:What roles do collective action\, mutual aid\, and attacking the colonial-capitalistic state have in the fight against the Trans Mountain Expansion project\, while being in solidarity with Indigenous Sovereignty? \nFirst Hour: 75 mins documentary\nSecond + Third Hour: Discussion \nWe’ve seen thousands of people come up to Burnaby Mountain during the supreme court of british columbia injunction in November 2014\, but Kinder Morgan’s survey and sub-surface geological drilling crews recieved enough data for the company to be capable of putting pipe into the ground (HDD). \nIn what way do we move forward\, collectively and individually\, in stopping this pipeline from being built without replicating the ‘pat-on-the-back’ attitude\, the photo ops\, the co-optation\, the ‘peace police’\, the symbolic-non-arrests\, and colonial-capitalist mindset that was heavily seen during the autumn of 2014? \nAccessibility Info: The venue is situated on the south side of Blood Alley Square. There are several cobblestones\, but there is ramp access and it’s an open space once inside. There are fewer cobblestones to navigate coming from Abbott vs Carrall. The washroom is not fully WC accessible\, the doorway is about 27 inches wide. \nthis event is hosted on occupied\, unceded coast salish territories.

SUMMARY:The Roots of Vancouver's Gay Liberation Movement
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centre for Socialist Education and the Young Communist League for an evening of learning and discussion on the Gay Libertation movement of the 1970’s. Learn how the movement started and what we can take away in today’s continued struggle. \nSpeaker Don Hann will discuss the Gay Alliance Towards Equity\, formed in Vancouver in 1971. As well\, he will showcase their pictures\, newspapers and other agit-prop. GATE was involved in high profile legal battles\, direct actions\, pickets\, human rights appeals and other types of struggles to fight for the rights of the LGBTQ commnity. Organizations like GATE sparked a movement that would inspire so many to get involved in not only the LGBTQ movement\, but to fight all types of oppression. This history is not lost; rather it is celebrated and used to build our movements into the future. \nThis event takes place on unceeded Coast Salish territory\, and we recognize that in acknowledging this\, it reminds us that we must always be struggling to decolonize our work. \nThis event is a safe space for LGBTQIA2 folks\, people of colour and women identified folks. Sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, transphobia and any other oppressive behaviours will not be tolerated.

SUMMARY:Housing Crisis Town Hall with MLA's Dave Eby and Melanie Mark
DESCRIPTION:Housing Crisis Town Hall with NDP MLA’s Melanie Mark and David Eby \nWhen: 6:30-8:30pm\, Wednesday\, December 14th\nWhere: Carnegie Theatre\, 401 Main Street \nWe have an unprecedented housing crisis for low-income people. Come to a Our Homes Can’t Wait town hall on December 14th and help put housing and homelessness on the election agenda. \nThis year saw record high homelessness in the Downtown Eastside\, with over 1000 people living on the streets and in shelters in our neighbourhood. The Downtown Eastside is now scattered with tents and smaller tent cities\, as people struggle to survive without homes\, shelter and on abysmally welfare rates. As a result of government inaction and the criminalization of \, homelessness\, homeless people have half the life expectancy of other BC residents.\nHousing Crisis Town Hall with NDP MLA’s Melanie Mark and David Eby \nWhen: 6:30-8:30pm\, Wednesday\, December 14th\nWhere: Carnegie Theatre\, 401 Main Street\nThe Provincial election is coming up this spring\, but we still don’t know what opposition parties like the NDP will do to address the u\nThe recent housing announcement by the provincial government would only house about 100 more low income people in the Downtown Eastside\, if rents in all the new units are at welfare/pension rate. At the same time\, we continue to lose SRO hotel rooms as gentrification pushes up rents. This year the city’s lease on the Quality Inn will also expire\, effectively removing 157 rooms from the affordable housing list. \nThe housing crisis has never been worse\, and we need all political parties to commit to real measures to address the housing crisis. This includes rent control\, 10\,000 social housing units per year with at least 10 social housing sites in the Downtown Eastside and measures to improve and save the SRO hotels in our neighbourhood. \nAccessibility: the building entrance\, theatre room\, and washrooms are wheelchair accessible. \nOrganized by Our Homes Can’t Wait \nThe town hall is taking place on the unceded coast salish territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Wauthuth) and Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) peoples.

SUMMARY:Keep Student Jobs: Save Our Non-Profit
DESCRIPTION:Find out more about us & sign the petition here: https://www.change.org/p/university-of-victoria-students-society-board-keep-student-jobs-save-our-non-profit \nLike our name suggests we do research in the public interest. In YOUR interest. About your city\, your food and your environment. We have been a UVic based non-profit organization since 1983. We’re the only community based research group with secure funding on the island (and one of the few in Canada)\, working for students interests and advocating for the environment. \nSome of the work we do includes giving out $30\,000 in grants to students and community groups\, employing 7 students a year\, and we established the first recycling program on campus. \nOn December 5\, 2016\, a representative from VIPIRG presented to the UVSS board of directors seeking social media support for our annual conference. The UVSS Board approved this support and complimented VIPIRG’s rep on the presentation and gave him a copy of the agenda (with no amendments). They then went on to ammend the agenda after he left and passed a motion to run a referendum to strip VIPIRG of ALL its funding. \nWe need students to attend this meeting on December 12th (6pm\, SUB Upper Lounge) to call the UVSS board out for its lack of transparency so we can save the jobs\, resources and activism for students.
