The Great Dictator (USA, 1940)
February 9, 2017- 7:00 pm
As World War II raged on in Europe, many in the U.S. still refused to take Hitler’s rise seriously. Charles Chaplin was among those who did. Chaplin takes on the dual role of dictator Adenoid Hynkel and a poor, Jewish barber who wants to see an end to bigotry and hatred. While Chaplin deftly ridiculed his contemporaries with all his characteristic wit as a mime, for this film he finally broke his silence with a monologue that decades later has not lost its urgency.
