Anti-Pinkwashing: Notes from Palestine

~*~*~ part of KILLJOY FEST 2016 ~*~*~

*BIPOC only*
*facilitated by firas*

what is pinkwashing* and what does it have to do with palestine? lets talk about it.

this workshop is a basic introduction to how pinkwashing is used by the israeli settler colonial state. there will be a chance to discuss how palestinian queers in palestine are resisting israeli pinkwashing, whats happening here locally, and what we can all do to resist pinkwashing.

*pinkwashing is the use of queer rights to portray states as ‘queer-friendly’ or ‘progressive’ in order to justify and/or mask ongoing settler colonialism.”

firas is a palestinian and syrian settler who lives on coast salish territories. they took a course on history of south west asia and north africa (SWANA) at school, and realized that it didn’t reflect any of their history. so they started doing their own research. for over seven years, they have been researching and reclaiming palestinian history. they have learned from the work that queer palestinians are doing back home to resist settler colonialism and pinkwashing. inspired by their brilliance, firas wants to share some of what they’ve taught them with you
