Were back with a special 21st edition of Calablast our monthly fundraising and local music showcase. This month we’re standing arm in arm with the Lax’walams first nations people in their fight against the Petronas company and our Government’s plans to build an liquified natural gas (LNG) plant on traditional, unceded Lax Kw’alaams territory. A plan which if carried out would disrupt and destroy fragile and ireplacable fish habitat in Lax U’u’la (Lelu Island) at the mouth of the Skeena river near Prince Rupert, BC.

The shallow eelgrass beds of Flora Bank directly southwest of Lax U’u’la are the most important juvenile fish habitat in the entire Skeena river system for salmon, steelhead, and numerous other species of seafood. 88% of all migrating salmon from the Skeena river, or 330 Million every year, rely on Flora Bank. 10 Nations and 60 000 people in the Skeena watershed rely on these fish for food, commercial fishing, and cultural identity. Lax Kw’alaams Hereditary Chief Yahaan (Donald Wesley) sums up beautifully why we should all be in support of the peaceful occupation of Lax U’u’la (Lelu Island);

“Our Traditional ways of life and the resources which have sustained our people are not to be pawns in the Christie Clark Government’s LNG dreams. Development within our Traditional territories must have our Free, Prior and Informed consent. The people of Lax’walams spoke very clearly in their rejection of the 1.25 billion dollar offer from Petronas, and this camp builds upon that rejection. This issue is not just a First Nations issue but one that will affect all British Columbians, especially those who rely upon healthy and abundant Fish stocks, of a variety of species at the mouth of the Skeena River.” – Lax Kw’alaams Hereditary Chief Yahaan (Donald Wesley)

CALLING ALL… Emcees, singers, musicians, poets, activists, artists — and everybody with a positive message, mission, or story to share!

Our long-term goals for this series of events are, first to raise more awareness and funds for local organizations doing great work in our city, and secondly to allow local artists use of the platform to perform, network, and grow their fan base while lending their voice to a good cause.

Calabash has a long, rich history of hosting events that focus on social change, community building, goodwill and fundraising from the grass roots, ground up… Events for the people, by the people. We are honored to be able to build on the legacy of great work that has been done in this room and provide yet another chapter of self-expression and giving in the storied Calabash space.

This night will be a showcase that runs similar to an open mic format, however, the sign-up will be done in advance of the night. Performers are welcome to come down to jam or sign-up on a waitlist in case there are cancellations. To sign-up to perform in advance or inquire about using a future event to fundraise and raise awareness for your organization, or to support in any way, please reach out directly to event host and organizer: Ian Is on Facebook
