Tent City: Out of Sight & Policing Poverty

June 7, 2016- 6:30 pm

In 2012, VIPIRG released a report called “Out of Sight: Policing Poverty in Victoria, Coast and Straits Salish Territories”. http://www.vipirg.ca/2012/01/out-of-sight-policing-poverty-in-victoria/

Join us for an informal discussion with Rose Henry, Kym Hothead (with a guest from Tent City), and Derek Book. We’ll be gathering in Centennial Square, with lots of snacks and bus tickets.

Things we’ll be chatting about:
-How is poverty policed in Victoria today, specifically at Tent City?
-How are tickets and warrants affecting Tent City (as seen in this video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjCPDtdETkA)?
-Why do we need more affordable housing?
-How are we as a society contributing to housing injustice?

We’ll also be accepting donations for a new camera for additional security for Tent City folks, which will be used as a tool to record their interactions with police.

This event is happening on the traditional occupied territory of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Lkwugen nation.
